I've been looking through various farkin posts and other websites looking for information on what time you need to start taking lights with you at the Scott 24hr. Does anyone know?

Also what time do you actually need to start using them, as there is often a difference between the two........

Thanks,

Well that's going to depend on your own vision.

Sunset is at 6:11pm (sunrise 5:30am) , Civil Twilight (to dark for most people to see) is 6:36 & Astronmical Twilight (when the faintest glow has disappeard on the horizon) is 7:06. The moon will also be full (moon rise 6:24pm, set 5:18am) so there will be some sections of the track were you can ride without lights for much of the night. However, there are sections of the track that are quite dark and some people may need their lights on even before the sun goes down.

Should be quite a night!

Oh all knowing Alchemist, will I be riding/walking in rain/snow?

If the alchemy is correct, I'd guess you'll be required to run 'em from 5pm, given laps of an hour will be the norm. I'd certainly be preparing with that in mind if it's critical for you.

The motion of the Sun & moon and the planets & stars around this flat earth is something that I can easily determine using simple spheres & gimbals. To determine the weather that far out I require the entrails of a goat

Well there happens to be one of them in an empty block 100m up the road, I'll drop in to your place this arvo, you can have the entrails and my mate who loves a goat curry can have the rest:D

All jokes aside, does anyone know of an "accurate" long range weather forecast anywhere?

Would the entrails of Noami Robson do? I'm trying to cut a deal with the Indonesian Government and the cannibals of West Papua.

Thanks,

From memory last year if you were going to be on track after 7:30pm and before 7:30am the next morning you had to carry lights including a spare front light and a red rear light.

I would assume that it will be something similar this year, and that this information will be in the Event Programme which will be mailed out shortly.;)

now that was a strangely interesting post. you are clearly a font of information.

That does rather assume a clear night. Should you be hoping for a clear night at Kowen? You might want to factor the temperature into your prayers - 'cause a clear night will be much colder than an overcast one.

Alcy, I think you know about Kowen and cold...

Further, riding stealth can be less than a great idea, given you're gonna be sharing the track with HID equipt spoilers.

...mind you, climbing the ridge towards the firetower on a crisp night - stealth - with the lights of Canberra in the distance and frost crackling under your tyres as your breath mists around you... well, it certainly is sublime!

That's what I'm hoping for.

The goats entrails say 4 to 18 deg C with a 20% chance of rain.

On the moisture front I had one friend tell me that their check of the long-range weather forecast has only 2 days of rain scheduled between now and Oct 9th. So assuming the rain doesn't actually fall between the 6th and the 9th the track should be dry.

I just came back from the CORC 3hr held out at Kowen, and it was dry and dusty with only one or two shallow puddles or muddy bits. The course used some of the Mont tracks, some of the existing non-Mont trails as well as some made just for this race. The other 249-odd people who also turned up will likely agree with me that the trail is looking great. The Mont course sections also contains some new (skinny) bridges that almost remind me of Whistler.

For those who are counting their sleeps before the big weekend the makeup of the 20.3km course is 55% s'track and 45% firetrail.

Nice gen Astroboy. I thought that the trail wasn't going to get revealed until only a few days before to stop MX's destroying it. I guess the rumour of building the trails in the bush with no connection to original trail is just bad gen then!

Looking forward to competing in my first 24hr!

Nope, the 3 hour used some of last years trails but I'm pretty sure that they (Paul) are still keeping much of the newly built stuff under wraps.

Certainly I wouldn't be taking as gospel the map on the website.

We've gone out and done a couple of training rides on the course from last year and I'll concur with Astro that it's riding bloody fine.

Yesterday had a couple of friends out there who'd never ridden the track before at all and they were absolutely loving it.

Just keep praying for drought...

I'm praying for a little bit of rain this week, then drought and then rain the Monday after.

Nothing too bad - I'm guessing the imfamous switch backs are in. Not to bad in the dry but very slippery in the wet.

The descent from the Ridge Run(? - I may have this one wrong) gets pretty rough as the event goes on.

Logs of Fun and Rocky Knob just get tiring.

yeah, the bloke at my local who has ridden it before basically said just to bring your lungs and your spinning legs and she'll be right...

bit of pot luck with tyre choice and i think i'm going to have to buy a decent headlight so i don't get caught out (i don't think that just the bar will be enough...)
