i want to get a bike to ride for stuff like dirtjumps and street. i am one very very tight budget (like around max $300) so i need a cheap bike, obviously it is going to have to probably be second hand. and i need to decide to get either a mtb or a bmx bike.

anyone have any suggestions to help me?

With that tight budget I for one believe you should get a BMX. You can get relativley nice ones second hand for about that.

for $300 you wont find anything remotely strong enough or even built for that kind of riding in terms of MTB (unless you can get something supppeerrrrr cheap) but BMX you could find something cool second hand. good luck with it.

bmx is so much cheaper if your on a tight budget and even if you did have a big wad of cash i would still recomend bmx for dirt and street. bmx owns mtb in those areas...

The little wheels are not so good offroad. BMXs suck for riding offroad other than super smooth stuff like DJs and BMX tracks.

Back on topic - with your budget, I'd go a second hand BMX, no way are you going to get a MTB for that money.

Get this its been reduced from $680 to $288:Felt mystic (as mentioned in one of my other posts..)

Torpedo 7 are very easy to deal with, my friend bought this exact bike and its EXTREME value for money.

Your other option would be to just save for a while and get a mtb (probably and stp2 or somehting)

Not only is your spelling atrocious, your reading comprehension could use work. Quoted above is exactly what I said, complete with highlights; you said BMX was better for dirt and I pointed out that if you want to ride dirt then a MTB is better. How, exactly, is that related to "saying MTB is better for DJs and street"? Nice try at changing the subject when you're behind btw.

ahah too old for bmx?
bmx has been around for ages longer than mtb has, thus you're too young for bmx

I agree with x's suggestion. That Felt freestyle bmx looks like great value and having dealt with Torpedo 7 several times I can recommend their prompt and stress free service. All the best.

I find that when the younger generation convert to BMX their attitude changes, they rekon they are "All that and a bag of chips"

I'd recommend a DK 24" General Lee to start with, you should be able to pick up a '06 model in a sale for ~$300 this time of year as they're clearing stock for '07. It'll need upgrades as parts break but excellent value. I've been thinking about getting one myself. It's a reasonable compromise between MTB & BMX and you could commute on it in a push.

BMX is a great sport that seems to attract more than its fair share of illiterate wankers that give it a bad name. This is a discussion forum, people are allowed to voice their opinion without getting abused by little shits like you.

And the great thing about this forum is that it's actually moderated and little shits get the boot pretty quickly. :p

bmx...... better for techy street, and techy DIRT (tricks and shit)..

MTB........ better for street hucking, and big DIRT.. as they are more stable in the air..

comin from some one who rides both.

EDIT: before i get flamed.. DIRT= DIRTJUMP. who doesnt know that..

Given we're on MTB website, and MTB is mostly about riding offroad in one form or the other, I don't think you can assume that at all.

just to clear up some dissagreements, i already have a full DH bike so i can ride that on trails / big jumps etc. i am looking for something that is fairly cheap to get (because my bike costs a hell of a lot to maintain). so i am looking for something i can ride street and DJ on and just cruise around the streets on. my main thing will probably be DJ though.

hope that helps clear things up

I do realise that this is MTB site but for the riding your looking at doing BMXes have to win. Cheaper (value for money) and more suited to that kind of riding.

you should try to get a mountain bike but if they are under $300 they are usally a bit rooted. so a bmx all the way

Lol man i picked up my gt agressor 04 for like 260..i jump it...and it goes fine..unless i case it in which case yu completly fuck your back rim and so on..
The forks on any MTB around 300 are like 60 mm with nothing inside..lol
I say go BMX..even though i dun like them..

Yer i sorta agree with kyle ... if u wanna spend under 500 go bmx even though theyre crap and i hate em. But if you want something so much better go for DJ mtb like konas or norcos.

^^^agree i have had my bmx for about 6months and nothing has broken at all excpt for one straddle cable (2dollars) and on my mtb every week i needed somthing new or a service. My bmx gets alot more done to it (thrown bailed ect.) and its all still working well

and overall they are alot ezier to ride and feel better in the air and you can throw it around because the bike isent twice the size of you (sorry if i have bad spelling)

Even if you got a $1000 BMX you would still have more fun and be beaten to the bottom a hill by a $700 MTB.

that is not true i spent atleast 4g on my mtb and 1300 on my bmx and i ride way more often and ejnjoy riding alot more now i have converted

i would only ever ride a mtb for dh or 4x or like trail riding (not jumps)
