Hi,

Just wondering, is anyone familiar with any pedals suitable for all mountain that are flat on one side and clipless on the other?

Also, what brand makes the largest clipless shoes... I have massive feet... Buying shoes is hard to say the least:mad:

Thanks

None that are flat on one side and clipless on the other are suitable for anything more than commuting (as far as my experiences are concerned). The platform is pretty small so they'd be no good for you especially. Shimano, VP and Wellgo all do similar models, but as said they have a relatively small platform.

my dad's got a pair, no idea of the brand though sorry, but they have a decent sized platform on one side and a decent clipping mechanism on the other,IMO it's quite good for AM type riding

Yeah, there was a shimano model a while ago, I wouldnt go with it as the platform was pretty average. The Shimano DX pedal is clipless with a pedal cage around it, VP do a copy called the VP-133. I have the VP model and can recommend it if thats what you are looking for, would definitly be a good alternative and a nice all mountain pedal.
The shimano clipless pedal with the plastic/resin cage is crap though, i broke that crap in a week.
Lake shoes are a big sizes, they go pretty big

I use Shimano DX (M647's) pedals on my bike and they are reasonable. However, and this is something that isn't an issue on the cheaper shimano version, the front of the clip is raised to allow for easy clip in, and it sticks up in the middle of the pedal. Thus I have cages with a nice bump in the middle that can get in the road if I use them as flats. The cheaper ones don't suffer from this, as they don't have the replaceable cleat cage.

The pedals were actually recommended by J5ive due to the replaceable cleat cage, as it can be changed once it wears down. I don't regret my purchase, though I only do XC riding. I've not had any troubles breaking cages either, so this may or may not be an issue for you either.

Perhaps you could look at Crank brothers Candy or Mallets, as I think they have a bigger cage and the clips don't get in the road as much. I've not tried them personally though.

I've not heard good things about the reliability of the Wellgo Pedals either.

I have had the cage crack on mine, but they are still useable. I love the feel of having a larger platform underneath my feet even when clipped in..

however they aren't quite like having a proper flat pedal underneath you, particularly in terms of grip

I think Crankbrothers Mallets are your best bet, not so much a clip on one side and flat on the other, but a typical Crankbrothers Eggbeater with a nice big platform around it.

I use TIME ATAC Z pedals the mechanism is excellent but the platform isn't really going to compete with a good set of flats. Neither are any of the other pedals mentoned on here.

In terms of big shoes try SIDI http://www.sidi.com.au/, Cannondale or Specialized shoes. I've got a pair of Cannondales myself and I'm a US 13.

"Jim Cielencki" Odyssey Pedals are good. Medium size, fairly flat but still some grip.

Mallet C's have a great platform, and it's big.

Lake make up to a size 50 (approx 15) in a couple of their clipless shoes but good luck getting a bike shop to get some in for you to try on - you may have to buy some outright from somewhere with a generous returns policy. Be warned that mountain bike shoes seem to have tight sizing, so it you're normally a 50 you might need a 52.

go "Jim Cielenckis" sealed pedals, i have run them on hardtail for 3 years and only needed to replace the screw in pins for grip. overcourse, u can take the grip pins out and just run them as flat pedals. and best thing is u get an extra 20 pins for replacement, for unsealed they are bout $80 and sealed are $110-120. personally, i would recommend these pedals for any freerider and dirtjumper.

The clip protrudes alot on the mallets, they are no good for riding without being clipped in. The idea of the cage on them, and most caged clips, is to give some extra support so you feet don't 'wrap' around the pedal, resulting in sore feet after extended riding.
