Well with 10 days to go it's time to find out who is going, what your riding etc.

I'm riding solo singlespeed.

I've had to massacre my nice clean singlespeed set up so that I can run a gear that I think I can ride all day and night. My bike looks like Fankensteins bride now, gone is the nice White Industries ENO eccentric hub and ENO freewheel, as there are no 21T freewheels in the country, so on goes a normal hub with a Endless 20T cog, and a Surly singleator.
Also gone is the Boone Ti 34T chainring on M952 cranks, replaced with a 32T chainring on a Middleburn spider. Also making an appearance after a few years are bar ends:D at this point I'm thinking function over form and the bar ends will give me another hand position and a bit of extra leverage for climbing.

27-09-2006, 09:29 AM
If you can get it off my wheel there's an ACS Claws 20 tooth freewheel you can use.

I'll be on the pr0n SS bike. Probably with the Surly 1x1 standing by for old times sake and possibly will have a guest appearance of another sekrit bike. Dont think I'll go down as far as 32:20, still decidering.

I'm on a mixed team of 6 this year as their token male rider.

If you see a bloke with some pinke tulle and a tiara on his helmet, a long blonde wig with a ponytail including pink and gold ribbons, a pink satin skirt over his knicks and riding a turquoise Yeti AS-R then that'll be me. :o

Something tells me I'm just not taking this seriously...

Yep I'll be there as part of a mixed pair.

I'll be on my Turner Flux and Miss Jane will be on her Turner Burner. We'd like a top 3 finish in the mixed pairs but we'll see how we're going after the first few hours and go from there.

We're both unlikely to stand out in the crowd (bikes included) but if you spot us say hi. :)

I'm in a Team of 6 Guys, I'll most likely be riding a specialized Epic, but if I can get them to a state that is somewhat reliable, I'd like to take my Proflex's for a race (anyone get rear shocks for a proflex 955???). We will see what happens though.

I'm hoping to personally get in 4 laps, 5 if someone in the team doesn't pull their weight. I'm in deep thought at the moment as to what beverages to stock the esky with.

It will be my 6th solo 24hr on a single speed (3rd Scott/Mont solo).

It looks like there will be some stiff competition (looking at the entry list) in the SS feild. Does anyone know if Patrick Jones riding on a SS as there is no SS next to his name?

I will be running two single speed both geared 36x18. The course does not have any nasty climbs so 2:1 is a pritty easy gear.

I'll be there in a team of four male, team Scott's of the singletrack, as I'll be riding a NRS I won't stick out in the crowd but it's a red one with Fox forks we'll be camped somewhere along the finishing straight.

Three best words from a team mate so far... "Got a Heater" no more cold 24 hour races in Canberra.
See you all there.

Team of 3 for me. 2 old MTBers (me & Peto) on nice bikes and a seriously fit Ironman triathlete (Pete) on a crap bike. Me and Peto are handling the first and last laps, along with all of the night laps, as Pete's got no experience with night riding, but he's fit enough to ride all day, so he's doing all of the day laps. Riding two 5-hour blocks either side of a night's sleep will not be a stretch for him, as that's basically how much he usually trains anyway. Me and Peto just need to keep his bike working.

Based on mine and Peto's appalling levels of fitness (we're talking zero preparation for this race due to injuries and work commitments over the last 4 months), we're aiming for a team minimum of 12 laps, but with a bit of luck, I'm hoping we can get 15. Still probably not competitive in the male 3s, but I'm just going there to laugh at FR Drew. :D

DaGonz

I'll be bringing the Zaskar with 2:1 incase the spec breaks, clogs with mud/dust/whatever... It might not be all that hilly as a one off lap, but don't know if I'd have the legs to push 2:1 for 15 or 16 :/

So has anyone picked up Bellcha for a SS team? I notice he's been putting in some fast times on the SS at recent CORC events including a top 10 overall in their recent 3 hour twilight event. He'd definitely be an asset for any SS team in a number of respects.

Mostly road riding to and from work and some long road rides on the weekend. I've increased the miles in the last few weeks and dropped the intensity, as well as stopped motorpacing at the track.

I was looking forward to doing 100k's this morning before work, but flatted both wheels at the same time, with only one tube:mad: To the twenty riders who passed me as I walked to the train station, thanks for asking if I was OK:mad: NOT! I've memorised your faces and you ain't getting any help from me ever! I'll just have to be content with 40k's home tonight.

but flatted both wheels at the same time

Which has got me thinking where the hell does all the glass on the roads come from? It seems to be only getting worse. Is the increase in recycling, and the automation of the collection of recycling increasing the amount of broken glass on the roads????

1 Night and about 3 day laps out at Kowen Forest over the last 2 months. Work, family, interstate visitors and illness have limited my training somewhat.

Meh, I'm just there for fun anyway.

I'll do the obligatory "too little, too late" riding to work, a couple of hill rides and a few more laps of the forest between now and race day I guess...

Not enough, bit of DH on the weekends.

Started getting stuck into the trainer at home after work until a week ago. Strrained my neck enough to make it uncomfortable on the trainer (hows that for an excuse) so I've been into the wine instead.

I've got a week left to cram in some fitness. I think I can still win this thing.

So, more time to line you up and bring you down.

Yes, but from what i saw last year on those bridges more crashes happen there in half an hour than at an entire 2 day DH event!

I'd run from you, but only if you're crashing. You have some sort super-human skill that allows you to have a 100km/hr crash after riding only 5km/hr into a bump.

I do have my KHS Rigid One, but not sure how quickly I can turn that bad boy into a SS. The Hardtail was going to be the forks butchered off the duallie put on the rigid. Might take both bikes and make some decisions on the day.

what's with the fascination with the single speeds?

(Apologies in advance to MTB Mamma or any of the fairer sex)
You know when a female is angry with you and you say:
"What's wrong woman?"
And she says:
"If you have to ask, there's no point in me telling you!"
?
Well singlespeed is a bit like that.

I dabbled with SS for a while (32:14) and I discovered the following:

-It was barely any harder to negotiate hills on a 32:14 SS than it was on a 27 speed that went all the way down to 22:34, even technical hills on dirt and rocks.

-Damn near anything you can ride on a 27 speed you can ride on a SS

-A lot of the time, you'll be faster on the SS.

Then I changed back.

It was in changing back that the real revelation came. You know old adage along the lines of "you don't know what you had until it's gone..." This applies so much to SS that it's simply not funny. With SS you have such a direct relationship to the terrain. You read the trail differently, you pace yourself differently. Even riding SS for a few months just as a lark I didn't "get it". Once I changed back, then I got it.

Oh, and in muddy slush while everyone else destroys a 500 dollars worth of drivetrain and has mechanicals, you'll still be happily continuing on your way, barely affected at all.

True dat! I've recently been getting up at 5am a few days a week to do 50km on the road before work, it's fantastic! Got the road/cycleway to myself, not too cold, enough light for no light (you know what I mean - but this'll cgange when DLS hits!), great start to the day!

Yes - they have been mailed out. Its a "paperback" sized booklet about 80 pages with Dylan Cooper on the cover in all his Scott gear... We have received ours in the mail at work. The rules 'n' stuff are all in there.

Only new thing to watch out for this year is if you're in a mixed team. There is a new rule (bottom of page 15) about how many laps in your team must be done by a female rider. You will not be DQ'd if you don't, but only mixed teams which meet this minimum female lap requirement will be eligible for the podium, prizes and assorted goodies.

I'm based here in Canberra and mine came in the post on Friday, but one of my other mates here hasn't has his arrive yet. Monday is a public holiday so I'd guess that they should arrive on tuesday. For a mail out they're cutting it a tad fine for an event that draws contestants from interstate, WA etc.

BOM forecast is for mostly fine or fine/partly cloudy for this entire week through to Saturday. That means hardpack, loose on hardpack, rocks, dusty and loose powder (almost like talcum) for the track.

I drives me fucking nuts when people complain about advertising. How the fuck do you think people raise enough money to run these things and provide you with a beautiful, professionally-produced booklet about the race directly to your fucking mailbox without you having to leave the house, mate?

Would you rather the entry fees doubled? Cuz that's what we could all look forward to if MTB groups got all high and mighty about advertising!!!

When you rock up to the race with a no-name bike you constructed yourself and clothing that doesn't have a single brand name on it, then you can complain about advertising. Until then, shut your trap and show some appreciation for being so well looked after by the people running the event.

Yeah fair point, Advertising certainly has its place, sometimes it seems to go a bit over the top though. It certainly is a very professional looking booklet, i just would have been as happy having to look online, but a booklet suits the masses more, and if it gives increased means for sponsors to be happy, hence increases investment, it is a good thing. Sorry to ruffle feathers, I am no pro, I am a definate also ran, the 24hr was one of my fav races last yr, the organisers do a great job.

I'm no pro either and I've never done a 24 before, so I'm looking forward to this and expect, like you, that it'll be a favourite race for years to come.

Sorry to attack you so directly like that - it's just an ongoing frustration that is directed at many people who constantly take advantage of opportunities provided by other people working in tandem with good sponsors, yet seem prepared to have a go at what creates those opportunities.

Hope you can forgive me for my outburst and enjoy next weekend as much as you did last year. See you there. Cheers.

I just took the old diamondback 2:1 SS for a wee spin for the first time in ages, at Lysterfield today, and I must say it was a lot of fun and rather quick too.

I think I might be taking two bikes to the Scont... You dont have to use the same bike for each lap do you?

alchemist

nope, you can use a different bike each lap if you've got enough

I don't know if this has been already mentioned by anyone, but lists of teams and competitors are up here
http://www.scott24hr.com.au/race_entries.html

It says there are 808 riders/teams on track at any time, it is going to make for a hectic start. I am glad i have already convinced my team mate to take that role :) .

Cheers,

Karl (Scott rider no. #3044)

There's a least 3 of us that wont present much of a problem for you. How do you think you'll go this year Positron - looks like a very tough field. I reckon that the winner will have to do a couple more laps than last year to take the win.

positron

Yeah going to be interesting. The winner will have to push out 18-19 laps (~350km) I am thinking. Going to be a tough race. I have support all sorted this year unlike last year, so I can spend more time riding.

Been doing 400-600km weeks for the last 10 months on the fixie. The fitness is there, just have to stick to the game plan.

Patrick Jones will be the man to keep an eye on early on. The race starts at 3am though :D

Precious Princesses are Go for the big race.

Pink satin skirt (and pink satin skirt wearer) have survived 2 shakedown laps of the course last weekend, 80% of helmet tulle has been sewn, tiaras are good to go...

Nothing can stop us now except regulations banning bad taste.

Geting awful close now folks...

Alas I'm not riding again this year but I will most certainly be there.

Working in the SIC tent all weekend, someone has to keep all your bikes going, and drink all the beer.:)
Seriously though I hope all you guys are going to make my life easy and prep your bikes for the race, I'm terribly lazy. See you all down there.

True, thanx to sum cont who put a log across one of the jumps on the Jerra XC circuit (Map here: http://tinyurl.com/omu5l) 3 weeks ago. Not much pain, but now but I have this extra lump in my shoulder.

So, I'm aiming to socialise during the day with a couple of laps, beers in between, a couple at night, and then more socialising in the morning with maybe a couple more slow laps. I'll also be on a rigid and that track (rode it nice and slowly tonight - http://tinyurl.com/msjga) will leave you with a bum like someone who's had a big night out on Oxford St.

So who'll win the SS Championship of the Galaxy? Watch Patrick Jones & Tristan Bennet again, and I'll give you a dark horse now - Ty Domin! Last year he was a State Open Road Race Champion (Yeah, OK, NT, but still) And he's Army so I have to back him!

Oh yeah and the Black Monkey, Rob Parberrrrrrrrry

I just got a last minute call to join a team of 4. Heading down tomorrow morning. Looks like it's shaping up to be a great weekend. Love that moving map of the course zifchik. The track seems a similar length to last year - just under 20km.
