Wanting some feedback from BOTH MTBers and BMXers.
Which do you think works out cheaper??
Which offers a better thrill??
AND mostly, tracks, jumps etc. Are there more for BMX or MTB????
Thanks
Are you asking this so you can make up your mind what to get, or just out of interest?
Well bmx is going to end up being cheaper. A good bmx is around 600-1000 (but up to around 3000) . A good downhill bike can set you up anywhere between 2500 and 15000.
A good dj/street hardtail can easily set you back two and a half grand (or more).
I don't know about 'thrill', but its probably easier to get big air on a bmx.
And about the tracks or jumps etc, it depends...
Obviously if you have a hardtail and a bmx, you can use either of them at all dirt jumps and skate parks. But of course you can't use a bmx for dh, xc, big freeride, etc. So in a way there are more mtb tracks, because you can call any track a mtb track: dj's, park, freeride tracks, dh tracks, xc, even bmx tracks you can use a mtb, 4x tracks etc.
So to sum up...
The advantages of mtb are:
More versatile (can be used on everything from skate parks to dh tracks).
Good if your a hucker/your unsmooth for street and dj (still fine if your smooth though)
And the advantages of bmx are:
smaller, easier to flick around
Much cheaper
In my opinion, they are much better if you are only going to do park, street and dirt etc.
As E-thugin said, they require less miantenenance.

in the end.its all up to YOU!!!
some people like the feel of BMX some like MTB... i do both. but i prefer bmx, cos they are easier to chuck around..

Well bmx is going to end up being cheaper. A good bmx is around 600-1000. A good downhill bike will set you back up to ten grand (or more!).
A good dj/street hardtail can easily set you back two and a half grand or more.
Yeh bmx is going to be cheaper, just depends what brand like mtb aswell.
You said a GOOD downhill bike will set you up for 10 grand or more. I say this is not true. That is a EXCELLENT DH BIKE, a good one could set you back 3000 new and still be good.
Good hardtail can set you back 1000, i got my 05 stp1 for 900 new and they have been one of the best cheap hartails around for awhile now. Also Norco two 50s are now only 1300 and they are sick for dh/street. P1s set you back 1100.
Not trying to start anything just saying, its not always the money that gets you a good bike.
No, I said a good downhill bike will set you up to ten grand. But yeah, I really meant an extremely good dh bike. Sure, you can get a decent dh bike for 3 grand, will edit my post.

considering farkin is a mtb site, i think mtb will win in the poll;). I think bmx works out cheaper as i have spent shit loads on mtb etc, i also think mtb works out to be more entertaining as bmx aren't very versatile and i find them a bit restricting as in the fact that you cant just hope on your bike and ride where you want.

I ride both, BMX and MTB.
I ride DH and street. So when i ride street i take my BMX. I find the BMX a bit uncomfortable, i like a bit of travel under me(mtb forks) because it gives me a bit more confidence when trying to do new things or if i have a fear. I am selling my BMX and getting a good street/dj MTB. I like the components on BMX so im gonna run alot of BMX stuff on it.
Also i find it a bit easier to boost out of and over things on an MTB which is always fun.
But in the end its up to the rider, what they are going to be mostly riding and what they feel comfortable on.

I recon BMX is alot better for street, park and Dj's. they are so easy to throw around. When you go DJing you can bail off them easily if you know you have screwed it up. BMXs are alot stronger as well, so they can take the abuse of gettting thrown around.
MTB is only good off road. for like downhilling and stuff. Its really bad to compare BMX and MTB because they are designed for different areas of riding.

If your only going to be doing DJ's, street ext just get the bmx for the pure fact that there is so much less to fark up and the fact that the bmx will be purely desighned for that sought of riding. If you want to do everthing get a do it all hardtail which won't be to expensive anyway.

BMX is generaly (not always) cheaper, MTB like said before is more versatile. I dont think that one or the other is more fun, just depends on what sort of riding you are doing, BMX is much easier to throw around/ spin and just taking a beating, MTB i find gives more forgiveness if you are sketchy but isn't as easy to throw around.

Well. I mostly do MTB, got a Mongoose BMX too, i found the brakes on the BMX are shite. they don't do ANYTHING. i have a bit of fun with it, too heavy for my liking, bulky handling too.
MTB's the way for me i think, light, as you've said, vasatile and a heck of a lot f fun.
I found a track right near my place too, DH, sweet as.
thanx peeps

they both have wheels and are both called bikes, yet so very different
hard to compare
pros BMX small, cheaper, 'more accepted' at skateparks
cons BMX small wheels - cant ride on rough surfaces........and.......i dunno:o ive never ridden one:o
pros MTB big wheels, more terrain available, so much more variety in styles, both of bikes and riding
cons MTB very costly, larger - harder to manouver in the air, seem 'clunky'
in the words of someone else (sorry i forgot who)
thats my $0.02

peeps??????????????? lame
and i wonder why mongoose bmx brakes are "shite", maybe because they are generally a low range set-up.
treads like this just block up good forums.
you cant compare bikes from different scenes bmx and mtb are two completly different sports, so next tome please dont post up "shite".

i like mtb as bmx's are too small. and their bars feel whack.
and mtb can have SUSPENSION!!!

Mtb is 10x better than bmx.
Sure theres more work and the cost is higher but for a good reason!
besides all bmxs look the same just a single chain on a little bike with crappy pad brakes.
Mtbs are way better u got stronger brakes front suspension choices of gears alot stronger frame.
The only reason you woul ever get a bmx is if you were on a tight budget.

I like bmxing better, only because i do more street and park riding on it. I don't really like the feel of suspension it feels 'slushy'.
^Why did you say mtb frames are stronger, mtb frames are not neccesarily stronger. There are many bmx frames out there that can take alot of abuse.

Mtb frames a big and bulky.
Bmx frames are smaller and lanky. Like a twig.
Although sometimes bmx frames can be bulky.
And mtb frames can also be a bit small

Cheaper: BMX
Better Thrill: arguable. both are very different and so have different thrills.
More mtb trails than bmx trails, but BMX can (can be, not are) be better for skateparks and street.

What about the love of simplicity? having a sturdy bike? By your logic, SS mtb is worthless.
What is the point of your other post?
some people like the feel of BMX some like MTB... i do both. but i prefer bmx, cos they are easier to chuck around..
that is the bottom line.

What?? Bmx frames are usually just as strong if not stronger. Think about how much abuse is thrown at a bmx frame.
i ride bmx and personally reckon it is better but it all depends on what u want to do

i ride both mtb and bmx and bmx ix heaps better 4 street cheeper lighter but nothing is better than going for a good dh ride personaly i think bmx r good because they increase ur skill learning how to be smooth with no suspension so when you get back on a mtb ur a better rider

The way I see it, when you're comparing actual mountain biking on trails to bmx, that's like saying "Oh I prefer to skydive than scuba dive... it's so much better..." They're not really comparable, just different. They offer different experiences and you might like one better than the other, but you can't really compare them directly.
When comparing them used for the same application (street, park, dj's), well the BMX is a very specialist tool. The MTB is easier to ride around (even if it's a SS rigid) and will smooth out the bumps betterthan the BMX, so at a pinch you could ride your STP style MTB on a trail, on a longer ride etc than the BMX. At the same time, the BMX has angles and design that make it more manouverable, simpler and stronger for it's given applications.
BMX - more specialised, better at dedicated types of riding
MTB - more general, can do most things a BMX can and a lot more.
I prefer BMX for BMX style applications cause I don't really care how well my bike does other types of riding.
demanufacture028 - I could bitch on and on about how much you don't know and how much you suck, but anyone who reads your posts and can find their ass in the dark with two hands and a torch already knows.
