View Full Version : Thredbo Race : How did everyone go ?

Crashed 5 times in practice but was way TOO careful in my race run with no crashes, and my time suffered. I finished midfield in Masters on the AC2 which I was happy with for my first race. Guess you learn from experience. If I go again, I will definitely spend more than one day practising and go a lot harder with more risks for the race run. Squeezing in everything on Saturday with the slow lift wasn't enough. More time watching the line's that the Elite riders take is so important.

It was intimidating lining up single file on the start line surrounded by M1's etc. Didn't see too many bikes with under 7- 8" travel, let alone cable discs. Guess the Nationals are a bit more serious than I had anticipated, even for the over 30's. Being fitter really helps too.

Maybe next time I'll be on a proper Downhill frame. Maybe a Giant Team or DHR208. How much quicker would these frames be at Thredbo compared to an AC2, given the same rider, both running Boxxers ?

got 4th place in u17's with a cautious run due to having 3 crashes in practice that day meaning it hurt when i had my leg in one particular position on the pedals so i tried to stay away from that position causing my pedals to hit rocks alot..... i was surrounded by a few 222's, a dhi and a new liquid dh bike but im used to it by now....a proper dh frame is the go for thredbo ! even better with a 5th IMO.... its all good fun though ;)

I got 8th in hardtail class, out of 11 (1 DNF'd tho, so I guess that's out of 10). Had a slow leak in my front tyre (no more tubeless for me. ever.) that let it down to about 5psi (could nearly press the tyre against the rim with my hand) before my run. I was pretty pissed with that, cos I couldn't nail any of the bits that I had gotten well in practice.

The bottom half of the track RULED though. The rock garden and the woods killed me, but the open stuff rocked.

Schmity,
Looks like you beat me by less than a second mate ! :)

I was running around 25psi and was getting bounced around quite a bit. The Boxxers on the AC2 leave the bottom bracket way too high for stable cornering.

I'm getting closer and closer $$ to plunging into a proper downhill machine.............

Trust me its well worth it, i used to run my boxxers on a stinky and it sucked ass for dh race.

i dont know my overall position cause i was put into U19's after my race. I raced in U17's unaware of what the cut off date was. but apparently i am too old for U17's even though i only turned 16 on the 4th of this month?? anywayz my run was pretty ordinary crashing a few times and having barely any brakes. but thats racing for ya.....

SpectRe

Pretty ordinary, i cleaned the lines i wanted in the techy sections, but i smacked something early in the course and instead of staying in my selected gear, the derailleur would skip up and down gears erratically whenever i got out of the seat to pedal. So i had to resort to spinning the cranks sitting down on the seat through the open sections :( If anyone saw my finish they wouldve heard my chain and stuff crunching like a bitch while i was TRYING to sprint to the finish... lol.

Ya not wrong there, those braking ruts were great fun for the forearms :)

I have two questions:
- Why the hell were there braking bumps in so many areas where there was absolutely no reason to be on the brakes OTHER than to not be shaken off the bike by braking bumps...?
- Anyone get to meet other Farkiners? I got to meet Link, Lindsay, and Squid's bike (holy hell!), and I saw a few others around that I didn't say hi to.

SpectRe

Yeah theres braking bumps in some pretty stupid spots - obviously people that would be prime victims for the callout of 'Get off the brakes ya bitch!!' :) eg. why the fark would people want to brake during most of that open fast section before bunnywalk rock garden.
I met 2stepin and spotted a few others of the farkin crew, oh and I couldnt miss Squid's bike, lol.

Did you actually race there? If you can ride that whole track at your race pace without getting major arm pump, you're my new favourite deity. Otherwise, shut up.

arm pump wasn't so much and issue for me, but having a wrist that wouldn't really do alot kinda sucked, riding the course one handed is gay.

Whoops.

Is it whinging though? Or just discussion? I see more of the latter.

My main question was; is a proper race downhill frame (low centre gravity) with 8" travel much quicker than a 6" freeride frame like an AC2 or Stinky given everything else (rider, forks) is equal ?

Are we talking 1 second or 20 seconds over a 7 minute course ?

It just makes it so much more comfortable, but it depends what you're like anyway.

It's so hard to put numbers to it, all depends on what you are like as a rider.
See my sig ;)

I'm guessing the bike would be a lot more stable in some of the high speed turns with more rear travel, and the faster sections seem to be where the most time is made up.

How the hardtail class winner did 7.21 is incredible. Impressive !

I dont get arm-pump racing at Thredbo -seriously- my main issue is fitness (read: rooted by kareela crossing) and um, strangely my feet hurt. LOL my shoes must be a shitty fit or something. Oh and the other thing is my new gloves hadnt shrunk to shape of my hands enough yet so they rubbed and were well on the way 2 givin me wicked blisters. :)

I'm jealous of all of you injuries & mechanicals and what not... I wish I coulda been there but i got my own injury that doesn't let me do anything remotely fun...

rey - damn you got near 7 min... when I get there I'm gonna try 2 beat that on the modified track... started @ snowgums right? ugh snowgums I always am so lazy through there!

Blue DMR with Super T's. I was the first of the hardtailers to go off, so you probably wouldn't have followed me straight down. Damn Johnny Dawe caught me SO quick tho... no wonder he was 2 mins faster.

What were you riding?

The top bit, up till the road wasn't too bad. Nice and flowy, bit choppy but nice. Wouldn't have liked to be on a big heavy DH bike for that uphill pedally bit though!

The rock garden section and the prolonged wood section were my major weaknesses, if the whole track was as fast as the open stuff down the bottom I'd be laughing :)

09-12-2003, 09:07 PM
i loved the weekend in general but the riding/racing side realy sucked for me..... firstly i have had a cough/cold since wednesday so the more lengthy track realy farked me from the start. then on satureday i blew the guts outa my shock which put oil on my rear rotor so i had no brakes 3/4 of the way down. i got a lend of another shock thankfully. in my rave run i had an off track, where i went through the bunting. then later down the track full front flip sending me into the dirt gashing the top of my knee and sending my bike at least 13mtrs down the hill. i pushed as hard as i could the rest of the way home but .......
.......i came last in expert.

I was the fool riding the ol' skool ATX (nicknamed Ass-Tickler-Xtreme by crazy nick) style red/yellow Giant DHTeam with Dorados, that insisted on popping dodgy manuals after the finish line during practice and race runs. :P
Earlier in the week i was also one of the aptly named 'bunting bitches' walking up and down the hill in an orange "RawNRG STAFF" shirt and silly huge black electric trucker hat lol.

i did a 8:09.

yeah everyone does get at least one run in U/19. your first run is your qualifying run. the 15 fastest riders from their frist run get to do a second run. just to narrow down the field basically.

yeh I rode pretty shit,

I was hitting it hard wed and thurs but I was too tired by race day to hit the rutted out sections (the track changed a hell of a lot from friday to sunday) in my race run I had a mech with my chainguide and had to get off and remove my crank which cost me umm too long...as soon as I saw the rider behind me I just gave up and waited for him to pass..

basically I rode like a piece of shit

You had the WORST luck! How many flats did you get? I reckon every time I saw you, you had a flat tyre... then blew the tyre off the rim at the servo... then broken collarbone... fark!

the orimbah nats round was canned man, and sorry but the orimbah track is pretty boring (not to say they wouldn't have put on something unreal for a national round)

but if you wanna call me and everyone else pussies for getting arm pump and complaining about it, then I will happily wait for the next club round and race you.....

nah fuck it, talk is cheap.......I'm just saying I got serious arm pump problems at thredbo and I know a lot of other people did too.....I;m shit shaun palmer (and other mx riders) have operations to remove the sheath that causes it....so yeh ummm......err yeh someone finsh my point here

I hooked up a Keewee to ride on Sunday morning and raced it. Probably not the smartest thing in the world to change bikes on race morning but I loved it big time! Placed mid field in old blokes and had a ball! Anyone wanna buy a Mindbomb, I'm goin KeeWee shopping :-)

Hey Socket,

too bad your front tyre didn't hold up for the race run. I was the guy riding the grey Kona Roast with V Brakes. I ended up coming 4th with 2 big crashes.

Cam-O,

Those Keewee's look really awesome. You should talk to the distributor bloke, he's a top guy. He has some weird mates though, there's this one bloke that drives an XR8 ute, man he's strange...
