G'day
I am getting an 07 Stab Deluxe and a few things put on it. Set of Deity cranks, e:13 LG1 guide, Profile imperial sprocket, SRAM x-9 short cage and shifter and a cassette.
Just wondering what size sprocket and guide people are running on the front and what gear cassette on the back for Downhill racing??? eg 38 tooth and 12-26 cassette.
Any feedback on types on cassettes, derailers, chains, and sizes will be greatly appreciated.
cheers, jack.

I think u need a specific chain guide compatable sprocket to work with e-13's but 36-42 seem to be the most widely used up front

Im running a 38 up front and an 11-23 down the back, connected with an xtr/durace chain
XTR chains are pretty much the ducks nuts, as for cassettes Im using a durace but its not really appropriate as they cost a lot and wear fast.
Get a 105 roadie cassette in 11-23/25 and an xtr chain. you'll never look back!

If you are riding dh i would recomend a 38 teeth on the front and a 105 roadie or any other roadie cluster on the back with a roadie rear derallier

I'm running 38t up front and a 12-23 cassette down the back, with an 07 Sram X9 short cage derailur. I tend to spin it out though.

for downhill i reckon slightly bigger rings up front are the way to go, cause it's not like you need to be peddling up any hills, you're just going down them. I use a 44t along with an MRP Worldcup guide and gives me plenty of gear selection for any track, whilst never really spinning out. I find that i'm never in the easier gears anyway (granted i do have an 11-32 cassette, so there's no real reason to be in the easier gears on a downhill course anyways) but even with a roadie cassette on the rear I doubt that i'd ever have an issue with not having an easy enough gear.

38 on the front with a 12-26 cassette.
38 on the front with a 12-26 cassette.
This gearing is the same as mine, It is perfect im not going to change it, unless i get a smaller rear cassete and front chainring but with a similair ratio just because im a weight weenie. :) I also run a sram pg 970 cassete in 26 12 and the cassete has been great and its reasonably light and priced. oh and did i mention how bling it looks ;)
If your going 38 tooth up front, Say good bye to the profile imperial sprocket idea.... Just run a e 13 guide ring

42t ring on an E-13.
I think I have a 12-26 cassette and XTR derailleuer, works very well for me.

I run a 38 front and put a 105 roadie cassette on about 3 weeks ago. The road cassettes are awesome for DH, the close ratios mean you always find the gear that's perfect for your needs.

Mine is a bit small all round. 36t then 12-22 at the rear. XTR der, e-13 guide. Still works very well, but prob not for climbing hills too well!

what sort of advantages is there to using a roadie cluster. is it just price. also just wanting to know if anyone uses roadie clusters on any other type of riding aswell not just downhill.

I found two main benefits, both related to the closer spacing of the ratios on a road cassette:
1) You don't get those moments where you are spinning a bit too much in one gear but the next is too high. At most races you spend the run in the bottom half of the cassette and rarely use 1,2,3. A road cassette is like having heaps of gears all in the bottom half.
2) shifting is smoother and faster as the chain doesn't have to move across as big a gap between ratios.
For me the price difference wasn't a factor.
I doubt they'd be any good for XC as you do use the top half of the cassette a lot more and would miss those easier gears.
