I wasn't sure where to put this so sorry if its in the wrong section.
I'm thinking about doing the 3 day hike in the Blue Mountains for my Bronze Duke of Edinburgh with my dad in the Xmas holidays..but hopefully on bikes (way faster..more free time and defintely more fun). Problem: my dad isn't confident on a bike. He can do firetrails at the most but I'm going to try to boost his confidence and skills before we go.

What kind of terrain is the track? Firetrail, gravel, etc
On a scale from 1 - 10, what kind of difficulty is the track overall?
Hills, decents..how steep and how long?

Thanks
Knight

If you are thinking of the trail form Mittagong to the Blue Mountain then it is not bike worthy at all.

I tryed it with a bike once and after walking my bike down 100 steps that are unridable, carying it down 3 mettal laders i figured i wont be doing it again.
I actually got lost and spent the night out there but that is another story.
PM me for more info if you want it, i live in the area

I think the Mittagong trail was the one we did, too.
Leave the whips at home... That trail is nothing but stairs on the way down and more ladders and stairs back up.
Once you're down in the valley, though, the riding would be good. If you're set on it, hire some day workers to sherpa your gear and hit it.

6 foot track everyone. Sorry about the vagueness. I've done the Mittagong track so yeah, I know bikes aren't good on that.

yeah i hiked the 6ft track a little while ago, basically the track is pretty wide open fire trail, but there is a few kms of really tight single track that i dont think will be ridable. each end (depending wiich way you go) you will have to carry your bike up/down what seems to be the longest flights of stairs ever!

Not all sections of the 6 ft track were officially rideable when I did it (couple of years ago) you might want to look into that side of things. As a ride it's ok, some real fast firetrail descents coming down blackrange:D , a bit of hike a bike here and there. obviously it's not the most rivetting ride but its worth a go. For the record you can comfortably do it in one direction in one day. I once did it from katoomba camped then rode back -might be worth considering this?
Hope this helps.

sorry just read the scale bit - I'd call it a 6 maybe? but more for distance and hills than anything else, put it this way it can be ridden on a hardtail with panniers no worries

To ride the 6 foot track ur gona want to ride from the caves back to explorers tree, due to an huge climb if u do it the other way. I havent done it in a few years, but when I did, the ground was fairly loose, on that hill, (someone correct me if im wrong), so ur dad might have a bit of trouble decending that. But apart from that, and the decent and climb on the way in and out, its a very flat and enjoyable.

Have fun
