Hey Folks,
Here is the beginning of my new DH bike which I will hopefully race the rest of the VIC state series and some nationals on (out injured at the mo). It isn't a thoroughbred DH frame, definitely free ride geo. Shorter and pops off stuff rather than plowing through it, but this suits my riding style and should be a hell of a lot of fun to ride (which is most important in my books).
I still have a few parts to get for it, but basically have everything for it. How ever I am in the midst with a mate helping me to design a new brake adaptor for the Brembos to fit on the Fox 40s (hooray for new unstandard standards).
Spec List (stuff in bold is locked in, already got it, otherwise still open to opinions on the rest):
Frame: 2007 Banshee Chaparral Fox Grey
Shock: Manitou Evolver Air ISX-6
Forks: Fox 40 RC2
Brakes: Brembo Racing DH
Chain Guide: Gamut P40 ISCG
Hubs: Hadley Racing 36h Gold
Rims: Intense Mag 30
Spokes: DT Alpine 3 w/ black alloy nipples
Shifter: SRAM 2007 X9 Trigger
Mech: SRAM 2007 X9 Shortcage
Cranks: '06 Truvativ Holzfeller w/ Howitzer BB
Pedals: 24Seven Slack Gold
Bar: '06 Truvativ Holzfeller
Stem: '06 Truvativ Holzfeller
Headset: Illicit Industries
Seatpost: Thomson Elite Black
Seat: SDG Bel AirPics:

Let us know how the Chapparal goes racing downhill, it'll be interesting to see how it performs.

Thanks for the comments yall!
Yes indeedy she should be one sexy ride once finished. The Brembos will definitely set it off. I have ridden them already, albeit not on a DH run. They have truckloads of modulation and power with the best lever feel i have seen. I am yet to take them on demanding DH run but i doubt they will cook themselves at all, true floating discs with large resvoirs, ti pistons etc. etc.
I am confident in how it will ride DH. I rode my scream DH and it worked fine, actually probably better for myself than a true DH rig. I have always ridden hardtails, so I am usually pretty selective with the lines and if i can i would prefer to jump something then go ploughing through it. The chap's characteristics suit my style and will be a barrel load of fun to ride and I reckon the times won't be too shabby either (although i have never raced dh before!). First few races will tell the story i guess!
Cheers,
Ken

The frame is available with several shock options, including the Evolver as well as DHX5.0 or DHX Air.
I chose the Evolver, Jay from Banshee personally recommended it and said "plushest ride ever" etc. He has been riding it for a while now. I had 2 main reasons for getting an air shock. 1/ I want to get the weight of the bike down. 2/ An air will give me the adjustability for different courses / different riding with the minimum fuss. I will race DH on this bike but also use it for trail and the odd bit of freeride in which case I might want to bump up the spring rate.
I have not ridden an air shock DH before, the only problem I see is if they "cook" themselves. But time will tell how the Manitou fares in this department.
Cheers,
Ken

Should be a lot of fun. I don't know how they've revised the geometry, but I found my '03 Scream was noticeably twitchy and unstable at race speed, but it was also slice'n'dice accurate in the tight stuff, easy to bunnyhop and suchlike. So what you lose on the swings you gain on the roundabouts, so to speak.
Looks like a nice build.

Indeed, well the plan is to get the bike in a mag for review including a spin on how the brakes go. So you should get some good unbiased opinions on it...until then you have to put up with my completely and uterly biased opinions! :p

...mmm...titanuuuim pistooons... Well i'm yet another one keen on hearing the performance of those new MTB stoppers from the KINGS of all things brake! One thing though - surely they have to be gloss red!! Come on, it has to be done! :p Anyway definitely a killer build. Can't wait for the ride report.
BTW, back on the brakes i read that they were released in very limited numbers around the world and weren't yet production. Are they actually being released now or are these factory demos?

Haha, soon enough! The rear hub has a 12mm axle in. I have a 10mm axle kit, but yet to put it in. I am off work injured at the moment as well so will do in the next week or 2 when i get back.

They are indeed available to the public. You are also correct that they have been made in VERY limited numbers.
Very nice Mate, I am loving your parts selection. Could you include some more photos of the Brembo's, also where did you pick them up and how much?
We ( XXIV ) bring them into Australia. They are only available directly from us. This means we can make them as affordable as possible. Being produced in limited numbers means high production costs and an expensive end product, we make very little on these puppies so that they can be available at realistic prices to the Australian market.
They will set you back $830 an end, easily setting them as the most expensive disc brakes in Australia (and the world). But...the best aint ever cheap! I think i only need to say one word about them to sum up how good they are...Brembo.
You can check out more pics and info on our website: http://www.xxiv.com.au/brembo/bremboracing.html

Ok ok you guys asked for them so here they are!:

http://www.xxiv.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2006/11/banshee_chaparral_build1_fr.jpg
And here is my Brembo dillemma:
I am working with a mate to design a new caliper mount to suit the Fox 40s, as Brembo do not have one yet...only standard for standard mounts :p. Will have to make a mounting bracket that moves in a bit and most likely will have to drop down a bit as well to work with the reverse mounting of the brembo caliper. But will all be good have got exact tech info on the Fox 40s and the Brembo calipers and mounts so it will be a perfect fit which will be CNCed up and anodized (of course!).
http://www.xxiv.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2006/11/banshee_chaparral_brembopro.jpg
So anyway, back to the bike. She looks so god damn hot! I only have to get the Thomson post, X9 Der (cheaper to replace than the X0 when i smash it on a rock), Illicit headset in black and then she will be ready to rock and roll. Although Doctor says I cant race until I am 100% which is around christmas time!!
Enjoy.

Ken

I'll guesstimate somewhere around 18.325kg's. Fox 40's,Sram X0 and an air shock on the light end of the scale. Mag30's and that Burly frame on the other. it's a big call. Should've got mavic bro.

True, the opinion may differ
It will be awesome in the tight bits. But high speed direction changes and stuff were a little sketchy on my scream, which is what I'm basing my observation on.
Not unraceable though. But you definitely notice the twitchiness.
By the same token something with slack, low, long DH geometry won't be much fun the 99% of the time when you are not racing. So its not a bad compromise.

You can't fully X it, I know that. But seen it a bit in vids with pros still pulling their bike right up and turning the bars, i reckon it still looks good on a big bike.
Maybe my terminology is incorrect, feel free to correct me on the name. Don't know what else to call it, same thing, just not Xed as far as I can tell.

I won't be riding it for a little bit, I wouldn't think they would "blow up". How ever they do heat up from what I have read and this affects damping. I am not sure on the details of this though.

Still working on my front disc adaptor, lined up CNCing, just have to finish the design.
Thinking I might throw on a different front brack and rock on over to the You Yangs on Sunday, although I can't ride yet but won't stop me from sitting with it on an esky full of beer yelling at everyone!

Ok, so today I upgraded my beast in preparation for the National Champs. So I figure if I am going to come out the ass in Expert mens then my bike may at least look freaking hot right?
So the Brembos have been relegated to the shelf (well not really, off to J5 for a review on Farkin! then onto Llews demo bike). But rest assured we have been talking with Brembo about the situation we will have official brembo adaptors for Fox 40s availabe on the 1/6/2007. Hoorah!
So I have replaced the Brembos with Avid Juicy 7s, 203mm rotors and Straitline levers. I have also put on the Straitline bar end caps as well as the pedals all of these in anodized black. It also scored a Fizik Gobi saddle as the Tiger SDG was really meant for my old crosser with more anodized gold on it. Looks much better now with a black saddle.
I have shaved some weight off with these changes, and it now sits at 18.645 Kg. As you can see it isn't a light build, this baby could easily get into the 16 kgs if I tryed, so that should dous the heavy banshee image :P! I had a flat battery on my camera and only scored a photo of the scales, then had to use the phone camera for the bike. But i will get more pics and close ups probably tomorrow.
Hope you all like it.
Cheers,
Ken

Camera is online again.
Today i put on a bolt on seat clamp and put on Maxxis Minion 2.5 rear and 2.7 F with a DH tube now up front.....this added 1kg, f@#ckers!
Anyway here are some better photos, will get a thrashing tomorrow at buller in the rain and mud!
Also we (XXIV) will be kicking it at the Nationals next weekend, we will be in the bright yellow marquee on start/finish straight somewhere. Should stick out like anything. So if you want to see any of this or talk to us, please come by. Hope to see a bunch of you there.
Cheers,
Ken

Thanks mate.
Yeah they aren't my rims of choice. But i got such a stupidly good deal on those wheels, fully built with Alpine 3s....I couldn't bear to pull them apart because the build is so good.
Once I destroy them I will put on 729s or 721s.
Cheers,
Ken

sure you'll destroy the mag's ?
but on the off chance you fark them, why would you then move to a weaker rim if a stronger one can't handle you ?

Ken!! I'm running single crowns at the mo, and u with a Banshee should see us go a huckin'
I'll buy the singlets and rocker hair product, u bring the chicks and bling!
Serious, when u have the weight of the wheel sorted it'll feel great... also runa light tube in the front..... that'll help and u should get away with it pretty well.
