Tricky, the iPod is a known quantity, the Zune is not.

I do know that the Zune's wifi is pretty well crippled and useless. You need another zune in range, then you get to tranfer songs between them, then you get 3 plays over 3 days and that's it. Don't stop the songs halfway through either or it still counts as a play.

Zune's bigger and has less battery life.

Some of the money you pay to MS for the zune goes direct to Universal Music.

You can't use the Zune as a hard drive.

I'd go iRiver or iPod.

Actually I changed my mind, go for the zune. it looks really good...

I guess I should explain why I have no interest in seeing Microsoft succeed in the music market. A few years back I read a few articles on the attempts by Microsoft and the record companies to agree on a DRM system. All I can say is I'm glad Apple's Fairplay system got here first. In my opinion Microsoft has no interest in enabling customers to use the songs they purchase. The fact that they have abandoned "Plays for Sure" and left those customers out in the cold supports my opinion.

Known quantity but not quality. As an iPod owner I would say they are known for everything but quality. Shit sound, absolute piss-poor after sales support from Apple, USB 2.0 issues with WindowsXP, poor battery life, they scratch easily etc, etc....go the Zune.

The CHOICE iSHONK for Dual-level Shonkyness

Goes to the…

APPLE iPod
(CHOICE Computer, Sep/Oct 2005, and CHOICE, July 2006)

An iPod is a significant investment, so you don’t want your APPLE to be a lemon. And if there is something wrong with it, you’d expect an easy repair and warranty service. Podluck.

Level 1. Several readers complained about cracked screens, faulty batteries and problems with sound reproduction.

Level 2. APPLE doesn’t allow retailers to handle complaints under warranty (which is their obligation under Fair Trading laws) — you have to send your faulty iPod to APPLE yourself via Australia Post. And if they decide the fault isn’t covered by the warranty, you’ll have to foot the entire bill.

Known quality? As an iPod owner I would say they are known for everything but quality.

Over 60 million ipods have been sold.

Assuming a failure rate of 1% (that is absurdly low for a consumer electronic device) that would be 600,000 failures - over half a million people, nearly all of whom would bitch to their friends about it, a very substantial percentage of whom would be getting on forums and crying about it....

The ipod is simply a victim of it's own popularity.

ahhh theres the winner there.

that zune sounds SUUUPPPEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRR......................sik e.

i just wish my sony ericson phone would accept all file types instead of just .mp3's. or maybe it does. i load a heap of songs onto it and it doesnt seem to work. and it doesnt automatically work with standard computers either. lucky there was a mac nearby when i had my presentation on it for uni.

Why are people not reading what I'm writing. I said quantity, not quality.

I still say the choice should be between the iRiver and the iPod. The Zune is a poison pill. What do you think Microsoft is going to do if the Zune fails. Open it up and stop it putting MS' DRM on your music? I don't think so.

Zune accomplishes this amazingly stupid feat by wrapping shared music in a proprietary layer of DRM, regardless of what format the original content may be in. If Microsoft’s claims are to be believed, this on-the-fly DRM will be seamless and automatic - which must be some kind of first for Microsoft.

You are aware that Zune may not be available in Australia before Christmas?

Hehe, I hear you Bazza.

The DRM is what concerns me most. The only reason I can consider recommending iPods is because their Fairplay system is fair (certainly compared to some of the proposals I've seen in the past). Rampant placing of DRM on songs that you own is not fair. MS has caved into the record companies demands before the Zune even hit the market, with a dollar from every Zune sold going to Universal. I have very low expectations for a fair and consistant DRM from the Zune store.

Exactly my thoughts on the matter. The Zune Store will be crap. The Zune catchphrase is 'welcome to the Social' (what the hell? who came up with that stupid phrase). In fact the Zune store appears to be more anti-social, you can only play songs from that store. Also, the Microsoft points system seems stupid. You must buy 'points' to buy songs.
I don't know about other people, but it seems to me that Microsoft is really being trodden on by the music labels and doesn't realise it.

It has WiFi, big deal, it works over 30 ft, so to be able to share music (which can only be played 3 times a day over 3 days) there has to be a zune user within a 30 ft radius of another user. That's only going to happen in the major cities and it's not going to happen for a very long time, unless they hand these devices out to people.
How does it work? can you access someone else music and copy it over by yourself, or, do you have to ask them to send it to you?
No way is someone going to pull the earphone out of a strangers ear on a bus and ask if they can send them that song. Is Microsoft kidding themselves. They must think the world (especially the cities) is a friendly place where people love to share and help each other. Must be on a different planet, when people won't get up and share or offer their seat to a pregnant woman or older person, what is going to make them share their music with a stranger.
People put earphones in on the bus/train/tram for a reason, so that no-one else bothers them, and they can live in their own little happy world. I wouldn't want that interrupted by, "hey, can you send me that song".

People seem to bag the iPod for having a non-user replaceable battery and crap battery life, and now they praise the Zune, which hasn't actually managed to fix these design faults. Go figure.

I think the Zune thing is going to be a massive flop.

Well after reading about the Zune, I changed my mind.

Get the Ipod :D

Or depending on how much you can spend, look at the 30GB Creative Zen Vision W - if you plan on using it for some video watching that is.

http://www.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=210&subcategory=211&product=15752

Thats what I plan on getting, 30GB $479 and 60GB $599.

hmmm i have an ipod, and have had it replaced once... meh not too concerned. id say its well worth getting the extended warranty, the ipod is simple and functionally damn good - simple and effective interface etc.

we all know they break, but this is inherent with the format - HDD based players are all bound to do it, they would all be running a similar brand drive. As has been said the reason ipods get such a bad wrap is because they are/were so popular.

anyways, the zune is a joke. i loved the ACA ad "how the world will be revolutionized" or some shit like that, with a clip of gates and the zune. thats not a news story, its a farkin advertisement! iRiver and to a lesser extent creative have made a decent effort at competing with the ipod, i think the zune will have little to no impact.

did they not see the way that restrictive rights killed the minidisc?

and from the above link:

"I want to squirt you a picture of my kids. You want to squirt me back a video of your vacation. That's [an] experience,"

that is just so bizzare. it amazes me that a company like apple, dispite being a big evil corporation run by people in suits can be so cool and creative (at times, they do have their moments) and a company like microsoft can try and fail so terribly.

i'd have a look at the creative Zen vision:m or vision:W

they support twice as many formats as zune and ipod combined , makes your life easier when u dont have to convert all your movies into one format, supports
video formats, such as AVI, DivX™ 4 & 53, XviD4, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG4-SP, WMV9 and Motion-JPEG

Personally I'd wait till we get the latest models from iRiver. They've got some pretty kick ass new stuff, and we've only seen the Clix and the e10 so far. There's the h140 (http://www.iriver.com/html/product/prpa_product.asp?pidx=43) which is a direct competitor to these two. Looks pretty sweet. It even as optical in and out as well! Kickass.

If its anything like the rest of the Microsoft products, it will be put to market half baked, with the need to upgrade the firmware in a matter of days.

from what i have seen in the past with Microsoft, they rush things thru without fully getting their shit together, and end up falling in a heap. Just look at all the service packs and updates windows XP has just to get it working properly.

Apparently the Zune sold about 30000 units in January. Considering they wanted to sell 1 million by June/July they are a long way behind.

Last I heard about it in Australia was Bill Gates recommending Australians don't buy it as the support wasn't here yet.

http://www.theage.com.au/news/digital-music/local-zune-early-adopters-warned-to-wait/2007/03/07/1173166764794.html

My thoughts - if you don't want to buy an iPod buy one of the "Plays for Sure" or Rhapsody players instead.
