I like their old shit better than the new shit
"And the angel of the Lord came unto me, snatching me up from my place of slumber. And took me on high, and higher still until we moved to the spaces betwixt the air itself. And he brought me into a vast farmlands of our own midwest. And as we descended, cries of impending doom rose from the soil. One thousand, nay a million voices full of fear. And terror possesed me then. And I begged, "Angel of the Lord, what are these tortured screams?" And the angel said unto me, "These are the cries of the carrots, the cries of the carrots! You see, Reverend Maynard, tomorrow is harvest day and to them it is the holocaust." And I sprang from my slumber drenched in sweat like the tears of one million terrified brothers and roared, "Hear me now, I have seen the light! They have a consciousness, they have a life, they have a soul! Damn you! Let the rabbits wear glasses! Save our brothers!" Can I get an amen? Can I get a hallelujah? Thank you Jesus.-"
I dont like Tool and bands like tool that much.....I might ust get my axe now :D But i just cat stand listening to that type of music. Has some werid qualities. Like the guy sounds kinda like he is screaiming but he's not. Just werid. I like stuff like Parliament and J5 and old funk and hip hop 80's music i spose :D

Can't wait to see them next time they happen by...
Considering it was 7 years between aenima & lateralus, & i think 5 years between Australian tours, i wouldn't be holding my breath :)

Still an awsome experience worth waiting for.
The last tour was so powerful.
Maynard as a silhouette against the backdrop.
Awesome.

tool is an awesome band but i really dont like what they sing about. Same with many other bands like AFI and alike. Theyve god some really cool beats but what they sing about is just fucked up. The devil, death, suicide, kiling people. I mean cmon. This surely isnt stuff which people can look up to and enjoy listening to in a song. Im sure im wrong in some cases of some songs but i recently bought an AFI album- sing the sorrow, and enjoyed the beats, but what they sang about was really depresing.
I cant stand this shit! Great beats- shit lyrics and worst of all the lyrics are really depressing.

the lyrics in bands such as tool & AFI are half the reason (well at least me) why people enjoy them so much. A lot of tool lyrics (not all ) are about questioning organised religion, especially christianity. They are not about suicide or killing people or the devil. The lyrics on 'Sing the sorrow' are introspective, written by the singer (DH) about his feelings or events in his life.
Lyrics in Punk Music (well good punk) and bands such as tool are as important as the music itself. Adnittedly there are bands that write lurics just to shock (cannibal corpse). In dnce music lyrics don't have to mean shit, as long as they are catchy. Good Hip hop also usually has wel thought out meaningful lyrics (political, personal or otherwise) but "artists" such as 50 cent, Puff Daddy and people of the same ilk just write dribble, it means nothing, it is degrading, and serves no purpose at all.

Totally agree - they rock!!

Rik, there is a bit of that, but I reckon it works for them, particularly in the live shows, as a full-on spectacle.
It's a fine line between doing your own thing and being called pretentious, and doing the music industry thing and being called sellouts. From what I've seen and read about the band, integrity and maintaining their own love of what they do is primary, so if they release albums every 5 years instead of every 1 or 2, or tour less often than fans would like, maybe that's what it's about.

I was just about to refute this till I looked up more of their lyrics. And damn, you're right - there's a lot of words about death and killing (didn't see anything about suicide or the devil (except the satirical "The Eggs of Satan"). My own interpretation is that a lot of it is metaphorical - about relating to yourself and other people, and killing off part of yourself or whatever. I dunno, maybe I'm reading too much into it...
Whatever, I love their stuff!
Edit: They are also big fans of Bill Hicks, which ABSOLUTELY HAS TO count in their favour - the guy was a comic genius. Check out his stuff here www.billhicks.com

That's about Hubbard isn't it? He really seems to have something against the Scientologists....
As for the lyrics, I am a huge fan of both Tool and AFI and their lyrics, mainly because they are very poetic, and like all good poetry speak volumes more than they first appear too. It's not really until you sit down and start to pull apart the verse that you can see what they're really on about; it shows that some effort has gone into it all.
Let's just hope Maynard and his apparent obsession with sodomy is actually just a metaphor for something with a *ahem* deeper meaning...
