Milk is pretty rotten stuff IMO, I never liked the taste and only drank it when I was a wee tacker because mummy said so.

I thought this (http://www.steadyhealth.com/articles/Milk___It_Does_A_Body_Bad_a491_f0.html) article was interesting.

Come to my family's farm and I'll show you real milk. There's a 10 000L vat that we keep it in. The milk that I drink out of our fridge comes straight from the dairy, no pasteurising or homogenising here buddy.
You grossed out enough yet??:p :p

Was raised in the far north so grew up on powdered milk for the first 12yrs of my life- discovered real milk when moved down south to the city and think it's the shiznitz! UHT should be fed to inmates- whack excuse for real milk. There's a girl who works in my office that's "vegan" and the freak drinks full cream milk in her coffee! DOn't even wanna ask her what that's all about coz she's just too pretty, and it would just spoil everything hearing her lame arse explanation:D Am such a pig!

I think this is a serious issue in today's society and should be discussed in some depth. I've got a few important points and arguments to lay down.

1. Bazza is an emo, lactose intolerant, soy-milk-drinking girl.

2. I like real milk and that's all I want to ever drink... i'd rather die at 50 with a heart attack than have to drink that trim/skim junk.

3. That "smarter white milk" that tastes NOTHING like fullcream milk is false advertising. Some people need to grow some fucking tastebuds.

Damn straight, it should be called Soy Juice!

seriously though I swithced to the 1 or 1.5% fat because my mum and sisters were drinking it and it was easier to drink their's than actually pay for my own full cream stuff. Now I can't hack the full cream stuff, it's too thick.

but the soy/oat/bullshit juices are all horrid, you need about 8 or 9 teaspoons of milo to mask the taste and then a teaspoon of milo powder to chase the after-taste.

as much as i hate pulling stuff from PETA websites:

Cow's milk is an inefficient food source. Cows, like humans, expend the majority of their food intake simply leading their lives. It takes a great deal of grain and other foodstuffs cycled through cows to produce a small amount of milk. And not only is milk a waste of energy and water, the production of milk is also a disastrous source of water pollution. A dairy cow produces 120 pounds of waste every day -- equal to that of two dozen people, but with no toilets, sewers, or treatment plants.

In Lancaster County, Pa., manure from dairy cows is destroying the Chesapeake Bay, and in California, which produces one-fifth of the country's total supply of milk, the manure from dairy farms has poisoned vast expanses of underground water, rivers, and streams. In the Central Valley of California, the cows produce as much excrement as a city of 21 million people, and even a smallish farm of 200 cows will produce as much nitrogen as in the sewage from a community of 5,000 to 10,000 people, according to a U.S. Senate report on animal waste.

and than theres this one

Is Beer Healthful?
An August 13, 2002, Wall Street Journal article reports that beer “delivers protection against major ailments such as heart attacks, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, and dementia.” According to Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy: The Harvard Medical School’s Guide to Healthy Eating (2001), a book that reviews all the science and all the studies, moderate alcohol consumption “protects against heart disease and ischemic strokes, and mounting evidence [shows] that it protects against diabetes and gallstones.”

What About Cow’s Milk?
The same book devotes an entire chapter to reviewing the scientific evidence on dairy products and debunks the myth that they are necessary or even helpful, pointing out that the United States tops both the milk-consumption and bone-fracture charts and citing a Harvard study that showed that “women who drank two or more glasses of milk a day were at least twice as likely to break a hip or forearm.” Click here for a review of the science on dairy products and bone health. The authors note that as few as two glasses of milk per day have been shown to double a man’s risk of developing prostate cancer and that three-fourths of the world’s population does just fine on a diet free of cow mammary secretions. Click here for more information on dairy products and prostate cancer.

btw. i don't live by the facts stated here, i don't think they are entirely 100% true and belive more research still needs to be done. but these deliver an interesting viewpoint from the dairy industrys advertising.

On the enviro deg angle anyway....anyd idea how many Hectares of soy required for 1L of soy milk?

Any idea of the energy required to process (concentrate the energy) into a carton of soy milk.

As we all know you cant "create energy". In the case of milk, a cow is doing the processing or concentration of energy (from veg to milk) and producing biodegradable - even useful waste (high nutrient fertilizer)...In the case of soy - it is harversted with a MACHINE, trucked to the process plant ina a MACHINE, processed from bean to milk in a MACHINE....

Be interested to compare the embodied energy in 1L soy milk v. 1L of real milk.....now who is the real hippy, ya hippies!!!!!

Adrian
16-11-2006, 11:56 AM
All hail the great dreaded murrum.

Milk is processsed in a machine, shipped in a machine, bottled, cows are inseminated artificially, (quite technologically intensive)... Need to consider foodsources, insecticides, herbicides , fencing material, (in both cases) etc...

Embodied energy is huge either way I'm guessing.

Oh by the way, that's Coeliac. Its a disease that makes you unable to stomach anything with Glutin in it. It attacks the lining of the small intestine and when it eventually destroys the villi (small finger like protrusions in the intestine) it then starts on the lining of the intestine and eats away at it. If it goes undetected you can end up with bowel cancer. Glutin comes from wheat, barley and rye which, in the western world today, rules out sooooo much. Think about it, bread, pasta, biscuits, cakes, gravy, a lot of soups, wraps, KFC, Maccas, almost anything you see in the display case at a coffee shop, donuts, anything with soy sauce in it, etc etc etc. All of these things contains glutin. Anyway that is a side issue to this post. Sorry guys. :)
Thankfully scotch, although from barley, is so refined that glutin is fitlered out. THANK GOD!!!! Beer, unfortunately, isn't.
