I'm just so sick of the lame, false, constructed marketing surrounding BMX riding specifically, but cycling in general really. To me this pic reaks of trying to hard...

its a bit of a far cry to claim it as being lame. Companies advertise all the time, if the ad is terrible then they wont sell anything, if they try and make their product look good then they will make some money. If you dont like the ad then go scream into your pillow because we really dont need to hear it.
Also, i havent seen any indication of bike companies falsely marketing anything. As for the picture, if you consider that they are trying to indicate that the bike can play tug-o-war, you sir are a fool.

Phft. There's nothing wrong with it. Marketing is marketing dude, every company that plans to get the public to view their services does it, all in different ways, i think it's good that Shadow Conspiracy are thinking of clever ways to do it, rather than just a typical riding shot.
hows this for killing 2 birds with one stone, and proving guys should never trust anything that bleeds for 7 days and doesnt die.
guy leaves toilet seat up, chick cracks it and starts leaving her used tampons around the bathroom.
advertising tampons and there absorbtion rate, bleed that motherfucker from a stone....

LOL, you kidding me right. Each to their own, but do you actually find this pic in least bit inspiring...?

My quarrel is not with the economics of the ad, in fact I'm sure it will help sell Shadow Conspiracy products, I take issue with the connotations attached to the image.
you sir are a fool.
Thanks for that.

True, but I think it’s sad that companies are turning to such lame images to sell BMX products. It just promotes misconceptions about the sport and loses sight of what is at the heart BMX, riding.

You're kidding, right?
You can't be serious.... if it bothers you that much, then don't look!!
That picture is pretty funny. It's not as if anyone would expect a bike to do that. It's about portraying an image of strength.... or something.
And think about it... it got you thinking about the ad, didn't it? So their strategy worked. Good on them.

Advertising:
"to call attention to"
Clearly this add has gotten your attention hasn't it? So really they have just accomplished their objective. In my eyes, advertising is just there so you're eyes are magnitized to look at it. Why do you think semi-naked women are used in some advertisments?

I understand the concept of advertising and it's objectives, but just because this image encourages 'a look' doesn't necessarily mean it is beneficial to public/BMX industry. Yes the image attracts attention, but it attracts the wrong attention. Just as the advertising image of a semi-naked woman attracts the wrong attention to whatever good or service is being offered for sale, IMO this image attracts the wrong attention to the sport of BMX.

farkin is really reaching a new level of sponge branined arguments. doesnt anyone ride these days?

The picture only needs to look the slightest bit interesting to get your attention, which it obviously did. Now I would think that 99% of the people on this forum, after a second there attention would be drawn to the bike, like most cycling enthusiast would, but looks like this mite be a little hard for some people.
Now I would like to know in what way you would percieve this advert to attract the wrong attention, its a picture, if it was in your favourite mag then just turn the page. Advertising isnt meant to work on everyone or im sure it would be a little easier for us all to make a buck so we could all get the latest n greatest bike out.

Nope.

LOL, now it's me who's milking the stone. :D
Anyhow, this image plays on and promotes the aesthetics/'scene' of BMX as opposed to the physical attributes of riding.

Very true. This pic obviously doesn't float my boat, but it will no doubt appeal to others. I posted it as it struck me as an overt example of 'image' driven advertising.

I hate to break it to you, but this is the case for just about all advertising: it's all about selling image, because in the (horrendously saturated) BMX market that's what counts.
Check out all the ads that have sequence shots of a team rider pulling some mad shit. Do you think they use those shots because they're trying to say that if you buy a pair of Orchid shoes you can ride like Van Homan? No (well, maybe, for the really dimwit kiddies).
The idea is to create an impressive image that consumers will associate with the product/brand, an image that they themselves would like to be associated with, resulting in purchase of said product.
Why do companies even bother sponsoring riders in the first place? As much as they might claim that they're trying to "give back to the sport" or whatever other roots bullshit they spout, the real aim is to boost the image of their company, so that it's more appealing to the consumers, and thus they move more units.
Image is everything, especially in BMX.
