View Full Version : single ring conversion
ive just bought a giant iguana which has had a single ring conversion done
now im new to mtb'ing and would like to know if i need a chain guide?
also with the single ring conversion is it true the chain will eventually snap?
cheers
chain shouldnt snap!
ive run single ring front for aaaaaaages and havent snapped anything let alone my chain :p
i think the only reason you would need a chain guide is if you plan on doing DH, but i find that highly unlikey on a iguana, XC you should be able to pass without a guide, and if you start to ride street and start to do fakie tricks, then i would reccomend a guide, but for everything other then DH and fakie, you should be perfectly fine

Well if you've only got a single chainring up front it would be highly reccomended that you should. You dont have to have 1 if you want but your chain is gunna be slipping off all the time. And no, it doesnt make the chain any weaker i believe. No reason why it should. ^^^you beat me to it:p ive ran a single ring up front for ages with only a frnt derailler locked out guiding it a little bit, and the chain hasnt snapped while its been on a single ring. and its got 2 links in it(snapped twice before i snapped me front shifter:P)

The chain isn't more prone to snap on your hartdail .... maybe you read the post about single speed conversions on a dually.
cheers for the advice guys
so ill definately be getting a chain guide to stop the chain from slipping off
why is it that a chain is more likely to snap on a dualy tho?
i also got a deore rear deraileur but no shifter. should i get a new deraileur and shifter or hutn down a deore shifter to match what i already got?
whod you buy the bike from? wtf
the only reason a chain is more likely to snap on a duallie is because when the frame compresses, the chain becomes stretched and the derailleur acts as counter to stop the chain becoming too tight
also, just hunt down a deore shifter in the For Sale section, much easier and cheaper
i seriously dont understand what that guy has done to the bike...... a single speed with a cassette?

One ring at the front dude;)
And yes, run a chainguide for sure.
no he said he had rear derailleur but no shifter, meaning that he couldnt change gears, hence it being a single speed with a cassette;)
