View Full Version : Brake grabbiness
Just curious how many people like their brakes (on their DH bike) to be really grabby? Not "more powerful", but the kind of brakes that come on super violently (a la HS33s etc) as soon as they engage? I've heard a couple of people complaining that this generally equates to a lack of modulation (which I disagree with), what are your thoughts?
Personally I love the kind of brakes that threaten to send you OTB as soon as they touch... kind of savagely satisfying to feel such sudden deceleration.

i love really touchy brakes

for the rear brake for sure.. I like to just stab it and get it all sideways that's very handy... For the front, I love limitless power, but OTB as soon as they touch? obviously i'm noot into eating dirt as much as you.
Though if you want that sorta shit, Hayes with goodridge lines and EBC reds would do the job...

Funny, I think that's exactly what the DH bike will have... :)
i'm loving the modulation on my Evlovers (990 type bmx brake) nothing i've ever ridden has matched them for control, power is down compared to a disc or nicely setup v-brake but i've never felt them lacking.
probably the most powerfull brake i've ever used is a HS-33 with plasmatics on a sanded rim, was great for trails type stuff (of course) but sucked trying to correct manuals or riding on dirt.
that said it's all about what you get used to.

I have my levers so when I pull them my hardest they are about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way down towards the rest of my fingers. It's good for street riding, because I only really use my brakes for manuals and such, but out on the trails I find it hard to reach the full potential of my braking power, therefore I am having to pull harder, giving me less control over my bike. It almost caused me to crash quite seriously last week end.
I don't like it that much, but I'm used to riding what I ride... what my brakes lack in outright power I make up for with brute force on the lever. so I can get over-the-bars grabbiness if I give them a good squeeze, but when used noramlly they're controllable.

Yeah, but having to do that on DH courses where it's rutted and rough (coughthredbocough) isn't much fun.
True, I guess, but I've only ever got one finger on the brakes so arm pump isn't as much of an issue.
So do I!
<---- weak hands
Really? I thought you'd have good muscles since your hand is on it all the time.

*stroke stroke*
I like my brakes to slow me down, instead of locking up my wheels. So yeah i hate bitey brakes.
don't go too hard with the stroke, you'll blow ya fluid everywhere.
Yeh, I prefer non-nitey brakes so I can slow down properly and not paint the dh course with my brains :).
I like to live.

Nah, my hand doesn't fit around it, so I don't bother.

i love my armours, instand bite. thats what i need. basically you dont use brakes on a dh course except for correcting yourself in tech sections. or maybe thats just from my experience......but i have found a point even with these brakes where i can glide on the brakes. its sweet, i love my armours.

You only use brakes for correcting yourself in tech sections? Why haven't you won any WCs yet?
Because he loses all his time pulling the bike out from the bushes.

Bite is good, but I like mine set up with a bit of play, before the anchors hit

Yeah I like a bit of bite but not so powerful that they lock up too easy. Brakes that are super-grabby get scary when your trying to slow down over really bumpy stuff.

Don't spose the prolonged hospital stays would help either.

hospital smospital. only problem is im still not taht quick....grrrrr. like i said though snappy brakes are good for tech sections and you can generally find a rubbing point taht slows you down gradually. or just dab the brakes where you can without going over the handlbars.

Well if you're not that quick (like me), it's probably because you use the brakes for more than just correcting yourself in tech sections ;)
There aren't any discs that I know of that grab so suddenly that it's hard to control. Even the bitiest Hayes aren't at all difficult to control.
