Please excuse my intrusion into Girls Only. Not a silly question (I'm was confused how it works & I ran an event).
Short Track racing is done on not suprisingly a short track. Where a traditional (often called Olympic) XC race will be x number of laps around a circuit of anywhere between 6 & 15km, a short track race is time based around a very short track (less then 2km). So for example a race will be 10minutes + 1 Lap. How many laps are done depends on how fast the leaders of the race are.
For the Sydney Summer Series, at each event there are a series of three races run over the same track. Everybody starts the first race with the fastest finishers of race 1 proceding through to race 2. The fastest riders from race 2 then procede through to the final race, the winner of which is the winner of the round.
So if 20 riders start race 1, the fastest 15 will go into race 2. from Race 2 the fastest 10 will then go into the final. If there is less than 10 starting in the first race every one will race all three races.
The races are graded so you wont be racing against the fastest girls (unless you want to). There is also provision for a Novice class (which is just 1 race) - although at the first round we didn't have any takers.
The next Sydney Race will be held by SORCC, with further rounds to be held by WSMTB (http://www.wsmtb.com), SSCC (http://www.sutherlandshirecyclingclub.org.au/) & CTMTB (http://www.ctmtb.net).
Clear as mud? Feel free to ask more questions.
If you like short track racing TORC (http://pelotonsports.turramurracyclery.com.au/Lists/Events/DispForm.aspx?ID=120.0.2006-12-13T06:45:00Z&Source=http%3A%2F%2Fpelotonsports%2Eturramurracycl ery%2Ecom%2Eau%2FLists%2FEvents%2FMyItems%2Easpx) are holding a mid-week series at St Ives from next Wednesday and MWMTB (http://www.mwmtb.com) will be having a race & Christmas BBQ on the afternoon of December 23rd, at St Ives Showground. The formats for these are slightly different, not being elimination races.
