I've just discovered a couple of cracks in the crown of my faithfull old Marzocchi Dirt Jumpers on my hardtail DH rig, so it's time for new forks.
Manitou Travis SC's are in my price range. Has anyone out there had any bad experiences with these forks?
I've seen a few pairs of rooted Sherman firefly's around the place, and I know that stances are woefull, have Manitou got this model sorted?
Any feedback appreciated.
Cheers
Phil.

I dont actually have anything to add here, i just like the way you put that...woefull. But back on task, Id say the rooted Fireflys are subject of years of abuse...Manitou's higher speced forks tend to be of excelent quality. Thats in my opinion anyways.

well im a manitou fan i have a 4 way shock and a sherman firefly fork .
imo the new travis sc 150 is awesume it has tpc dampening and the cool new qr20 lowers and for the price (assuming you are getting them from t7) is great

What high quality manitou forks have you ridden out of interest? What would make you think the higher spec forks would be better quality?
Manitou is SHIT... There forks just play up. Send them of for a service and they will come back just as worse. If you can crack dirt jumpers then manitou's will give you problems even if you werent an abuser they probably would... You want quality check out the rockshox domain, lyric and totem. PEACE

Cam (Im guessing its you as no one else interupts my evening with "MANITOU IS SHIT!" over msn), as i said to you, ive only experience with the XC range on forks...R7s, Blacks, Minutes etc and they are of excelent build..not hasstles with any of them. All have excelent quality and it would be expected that this carries through to the top DH/FR forks. They are competing with the likes of Boxxer and 888 remember. My best mate has kept his Axels which are a lower end fork and has had no isses with them. Servicing was fine from Manitou for them and hes pretty hard on his forks. The only crap i have seen Manitou dish out is the Stance line up. No one has said anything about the Travis having any problems except yourself and they have not been specific to what Phool wants to know. I think rather then listen to people (us) bitch about whether Manitou are good or not would be to physically go out there and let the forks do the talking. Good luck mate with it.

Sorry because your sid hydra air spring rattles, but just because you have taken a fork for a car park ride doesnt tell you there performance and quality in detail. But i guess it's angus the do it all bike freak here so listen to him. Keep on topic now mate, this kid is thinking of making the biggest mistake of his life.

Go talk to chris whitelock about his travises after several services and cartridge replacements. He will tell you if he doesnt have his googles on! Maybe you could talk to mtbforever about his nixons, he has loved them.... apart from there shit performance and problems.
I will admit, I have not yet seen a problem with gold labels. But this is because they are made out of the strongest cheap quality shit manitou can find and they feel like rigids so dont bother getting 100mm travel kiddies.

Almost any feedback appreciated......
I'm not a harsh rider, but I am 6' 5" and 95Kg's (I like candle lit dinners, and long walks on the beach, ect.), The 03 DJ3's have done pretty well to handle three seasons of DH.
I guess what I'm asking is for the $850 that underwaterprojectileseven is asking, can I do better?

i think the question still stands, what manitou forks have YOU owned and broken?

Davo has a point...you have not actually owned any Manitou forks mate.

You had damn well better believe it. Just stop bitchin' about whats crap or what no and ride your damn bike. In regards to your car park comment, I borrowed a Jamis XLT-2 with Minute 2:00s and rode the trails around Olinda...i loved it (Infinite Travel!) and they are an excellent fork, i met a guy at a club bike ride who had been riding on R7s and this was at a time when they were realtivly new to the scene and he was loving every minute of them...he gave me all the inside goss on what the weaknesses and this was pretty much just the break in period (and that is with a brand new fork that no one had even heard of...now R7s are as popular as SIDs. I have already said that i have not used their DH forks and i believe their would be alot of people who would beg to differ with your statement about the Gold Lables. Its easy to rattle off these names which mean nothing to me and many others who say they think these forks are crap...as im sure they do. You dont think your Pikes are crap because you went through a couple of seals and a motion control unit while my 2001 Rock Shox SID Hydra Airs (which you so happily pay out), are still on their original seals and happily filled with the same air pressure Bike Workshop put in for me.
Sorry because your sid hydra air spring rattles,
Air doesnt have springs! ;)
Appoligies Phool for this bitch session that seems to have errupted...see if you can find some forks and take them for a test ride...that will solve all.

Um i have sherman flicks and they are great, the only reason the travle adjust broke on them was cause i rode them to aggressivly in small travel (dont do this people)
And the Gold Labels are rigid becasue they are a street specific fork. Becasue you seem to know everything else about everything even if you havnt experienced it, lots of soft travel sucks ass for street and Dj. Hint the reason Manitou's street, DJ specific fork is so rigid.
And forgive me for adding but when you say "strongest cheap quality shit" you kinda contradict yourself and look like a well big idiot
wasnt there something different about the 03 dirt jumpers that made them weaker? different material they were made of or something

Yeah, I've seen/heard of a few pairs of 03 DJ's broken at the top of the stanchions, The later ones went to steel stanchions (03's are aluminium).
Mine have cranked through the mudguard mount holes on the underside of the crown, too many nose weelies me thinks.....

I heard that too...but i guess it was from a '03 Norco 125 owner...apparently those have weak headtubes which would be an interesting mix.

Ha!
My DJ's came on my '03 125! Both the Forks and the frame lived a long and fruitfull life, despite the rumors!
The Norco eventually cracked through the chainstay at Thredbo this year. It was replaced by a DMR Exalt frame.

Rumors are just that! I know tons of people with 125 as well that havent cracked or anything...i think its just when they are told its going to happen enough times, they start to believe it then SNAP!

That 125 is the best value bike I have ever owned, never had any issues with it!
It was a bit sketchy at Thredbo though:rolleyes:

So the Traviss are going on the Exalt? That sounds wickid enough!

And how much advice do you give out when you dont even get out and actually have a ride, you just permanetly worry about how pimp your bike is????? I have seen many of my mates ride manitou forks harder than i would if not the same. There are constantly play up and giving them the shits. If there not there working shit from square one. "OMG my 100mm stances are only going in 70mm and making a sick as clunking noise...... SICK" Are you asking me to go buy some of manitous forks to proove a point. I can just save the money by doing the sensible thing and giving you advice that my friends have given me and stay far away from them.

My pikes were fine...... Go talk to ash down at the lbs i think he would know more than you as he pulled them apart several times for services for the sake of being a good mate and forks performance and maiteanance. why should i ride such an ajustable fork when i liked them hard and at one travel setting... You think manitou are so good because you are comparing them to your 2001 model basic fork which is unlikely to crap up because its so basic due to 2001 technology.. HAVE you ridden a pair of decent competetors forks for instance revelations, rebas and some of the marzocchi xc range? He wants an opinion on the travises not some manitou cross country forks! ALL maniytou forks are like a lucky dip, you either get a pair that will give you nothing but constant problems or a set that run like shit but reliably...
If you have a problem with my spelling sorry, but this is a mtb forum im not hear to improve my punctuation and spelling. If i was i wouldnt be hear i would be hear www.englishforums.com (http://www.englishforums.com)

HAH! the marzocchi xc range is a joke.
ETA is quite possibly the worst travel adjust system EVER made.
People, don't listen to anything this guy says.
He stated in another thread that the paint scratched off his shimano dx clipless... (They are anodised...)
And also, "you want quality get blah blah blah "totems"
how many people do you actually know that have ridden totems yet, let alone YOU?

You do realise that the ""new"" rock shox motion control assembly, like in the pike you have, is basically a rip off of the manitou TPC+ damper dont you? Nah, didnt think so.........

I think Dr. Smooth has some deep, dark, Manitou hatred issues that he needs to deal with (owned a pair of early single crown Xverts maybe).
That being said, I still haven't forgiven Rock Shox for Psylo XC's

I think "Creeeek Creeeek" would sufficiently cover it.
Oh, and having to pull them apart several times to reglue the damping piston (read: bit of plastic with a hole in it) to the shaft.

Ah, Rock Shox creeeky crowns syndrome eh? Humm, heard about this! Ah well, not to worry, soon youll have some Traviss
I was about to buy travis 150mm, but a few days before Dave put his talas up for sale and I got them instead.
I did some research on them and I read pretty much only positive things about the travis range.
and dr. smooth maybe you Should be reading those english forums a bit more often ;)
