I am looking for a light wheel set that is cheap. They will be used for 4x and down hill. Remember though that I am not at all fast or hardcore (I only jump when I know I'm not gonna die - ie nothing over 3m gaps basically). I also need a fairly narrow rim. I have a 28mm rim currently and even with a 2.0 larsen on the rear the slightest sign of dirt clinging to the tyre results in rubing on the swing arm (IH hollow point). howerever when I ran a TAC19 rim (xc shit) I ran a 2.5 tioga white tiger no problems. I see ForTheRiders have Mavic Crossrides for $499 for a complete wheel set. there light enough compared to what I have now (1.98kgs/set to dabomb rims on shimano hubs more like 2.5kgs). what are the rim widths like and do you think they will hold up (i got 2 years out of the TAC19s with no servicing or retentions before one packed it in when I landed sideways and thats when I wasn't so worried about crashing.)

Crossrides are wheels.
However, i doubt they'd hold up to the abuse dished out by 4X and DH.

I don't think the Crossrides would be strong enough for what you say you do. They are more the entry level XC wheelset for Mavic. These are a bit more expensive but check them out anyways:

Hope Pro II hubs (VERY good)
DT Swiss 5.1d rim

$520

There are also more combinations you can check out on Chain Reaction and they are very reliable.

Best of luck =D

Crossrides won't handle constant hucking/DH usage.
As for the price, you can get them for $100 cheaper if you look around other Aussie stores.
