Hello I’m Nick
I’m thinking of getting back into mountain bike Riding after my bike was stolen last year  . I live in Sydney and I have been ridden up at the oaks trial in the Blue Mountains and it was heaps of fun :D . I was looking at getting a new bike, and after riding my mate cannondale daulie, I’m really keen on getting dualie and i had the specialized stuntjumper in mind, I have two questions, is that brain thing they talk about really good?
Is it worth getting a really expensive bike ?

Hello, and welcome to Farkin

Is it worth getting a really expensive bike ?

Well it depends on the specs it has, and most of all if it suits you.

I can answer number 2..
Its worth buying an expensive bike if its not going to go to waste...
if your not going to ride it..dont get it :P

i want to do lots of trail riding, and i also would mind riding to work. does that sound like that bike would be good for me? i like the fact that you can turn off the rear shock with the lever. I really like the look of it :o

My wife has a Specialiszed Epic Marathon which has the Brain technology. She certainly seems to like it. Its not as "forgiving" as a my Trance but hey its more comfy then a hardtail off jumps/airs :-) Don't feel much "bob" when riding it so its certainly doing it's job! We would definately recommend them.

Hope that helps your decision.

i don't really know how much i want to spend, i just want something that is going to last and be good quality . 3500  does seem a bit much but if it really good then i'll shell out the cash.

Hey mate, Welcome to Farkin.

It is not a matter of how much you spend on a bike really. Yes more money gets you higher quality parts etc, but if you find a bike that is comfy and feels really good to you to ride. Go for that. You are better off on something you like rather than somehting you bought because someone said to.

I'd say go around a few bike shops and try a few different bikes. See how they all compare.

The Specialised sounds like a nice bike and the Brain setup sounds pretty good. I haven't ridden one and can't really say.

Try a few different makes and models and see how you go. I'd guess you are looking for somehting around the 4-5inch rear end travel mark??

Good luck hope this sort of helped.

that brain thing is awesome! if you don't know and for those that don't, what it does is when you go off a relatively big drop and the air shock recieves a beating, to stop it bottoming out, the 'brain' pumps extra fluid into the shock, saving you and your preciouse assets.. and the bikes from injury and borken parts.

if your a rookie at riding, it's not the greatest idea to get an expencive bike unless you're 100% positive your going to ride heaps and progress at a reasonable rate.

If your keen go for it. I have been in to riding all the time for about a year and a half now and love getting new bikes. I just got my 3rd, a DH. It's the best money I've spent. If you love your riding there is no regrets, I only regret not buying my bikes earlier, id be a better rider!! Treat yourself. But find the bike that is right. I work in a HIFI store and I have been known to tell people that if I hade their money they are spending on a Plasma/LCD I'd buy a bike!!! Its allways funny to see their reaction. After all its just what gives you the most Utility.

Well, it's not Liverpool, but in my opinion, the best bike shops in Sydney are:

Bike Addiction (Manly)
Manly Cycles
City Bike Depot (Sydney CBD)

Just went spending on a bike, remember to focus on what FRAME you are getting first, before looking at the rest of the bike. You can always change parts later, but the frame is the basis, or foundation, of your ride.

For instance, Giant has many different frames for different styles of riding. But that same frame can have up to four different builds, from a budget spec/build/parts, to top-end spec/build/parts.

If you find the frame that is perfect for you, and there's a few different builds around it (double check with the sales people that the frame is identical on the different builds, just in case...), spend as much as you feel comfortable with to get as good a build as possible. And if that means the "budget" build, well, if that's what it takes to ensure you get that frame, then so be it!

After you've secured the purchase of the perfect frame for you, you can always incrementally change parts on the bike as they break, or you have money to spare! Eventually, you can turn your "budget" build into what is considered the "top-end" build! Heck, maybe even what many consider to be the "exotica" build!

But remember... the frame is the most important thing to spend on! Suspension after that. The rest are details.

I have a stumpjumper comp, its a really nice do everything bike. Goes up hill really well, and the 5" of travel is nice n smooth. The lock out front & back is great coz you can run the suspension pretty soft & just lock it out when you need to. Ive done a 110km cross country race on it no worries & then put on some chunky 2.5" tires & hit the downhill track. Heaps of fun.
