just picked up my 07 Giant STP2 in the 14.5" size. man, this bike just inspires confidence.
one thing i want to change is the front derailer setup. i dont like noisy bikes and removing the front derailer and extra sproket will help lessen that. im keeping the bigger of the two cause after riding around that offers the more useable ratios.
now my problem. how is it that you take the crank of so i can remover the extra sproket. ive got the bash ring off and sproket im keeping off but i need to get the crank off to remove the smaller sproket.
get an allen key that fits the bolt in the middle of the crank arm and undo it it slide off the arm take the small ring off and put the crank arm back on

Mate, im pretty sure most of the noise will be from your deraileur hitting the frame.
Few things could solve this problem,
-get a chain device
-Run single speed (single ring up front and single ring at the back)

Probably just a poorly tuned front derailler

Are you using lowest gear with biggest ring and vice versa, so your chain is rubbing against the derailer?

hmm, rode a bit more tonite and its not that noisy. but still, i want to get rid of the front derailuer...its added weight i dont need.
i undid the large allen key bolt and it definately isnt coming off. should i need a puller?

my friend did the exact same thing, dont do it bad idea chain just bounces off the single ring up front, unless you are putting a chainguide on or your chain is really short.

hmm, provided the bashring stays on mine didn't cause me that much trouble...
you will need a crank extractor dude;)

Is weight such an issue on a STP?

it is when the rider is packing a few....
alrite, i think i might leave it til i take it in for its service in 3 months and get the LBS to do it. might even get a e.13 chain device and get them to fit that at the same time.

no he wont need a crank puller because they are howitzer drive just slide em off, i ran single ring up front for a month or so got a bit annoying with the chain dropping on most dh runs so i went ss

definately wont be going SS...defeats the purpose of having a mountain bike.
so the cranks should just slide off???? do they need any persuasion?

mountain bikes are made to ride offroad, how does ss stop that?
and yeh they will just slide off easy as

No they shouldnt.
If they do they are in need of replacment, the point behind the interface is it is ment to be really tight and snug. Best bet if u must take it off is get a crank puller.

you can do 2 things really, the STP's were always noicey with the front derailer, you can run single chain ring on the front or you can go single speed which is a great option on the STP

well these ones are deffinately not just coming off by hand. might get in there with rubber mallet tomorrow.
i will definately need a chain device as well cause everytime i back pedaled tonite the chain would jump off the front sprocket.

OMg you havnt thought about this very much have you. A front derailuer is going to wiegh less then a chain device lol. maybe think next time

but, the derailuer, shifter and extra chain ring are going to weigh the same if not more than than a chain device. its also to stop the chain coming off the front when i back pedal.

Just a question regarding the howitzers...if they dont come off like this guy is finding, are you still able to use a crank remover? If the rubber mallet idea doesnt work, hell need another alternative.

hmm interesting.
so, if they dont just slide off...they are faulty?

More than just one.. I've heard a few stories of Cranks falling off those things.
But yeah They should just slide off. Maybe try tapping with a rubber mallet?
Take it to your Local bikeshop... If you havn't got a chain breaker cause you may need one to take the front deraliuer off.... I know on the 06 stp2s the front deraliuer couldn't be undone so the chain could come out.
