well i wear one . a troy lee combat. only after i broke my collar bone then my elbow a year later. not sure if it will stop injuries but i'd think it would lessen the impact by a fair bit.

Don't wear one, and have only ever seen 4 or 5 people wear them. 3 of them at Races.

yer there great especially if ure doing single track down hill as i learnt. i recently got a 661 pressure suit pro they wont stop you hearting ure self but will stop gravel rash and spread the impact out more evenly when you fall off

Get one... Its saved me a lot.
If you get one that fits you right, it can lessen the chance of a serious injury like a broken collar bone or a broken spine.
Don't say this.. but you Mum doesn't seem the brightest if she thinks protective equipment won't help.

I always wear one when riding the cannonball run at thredbo, and some of the other rockier DH tracks around.
They really do save your arse a significant amount of time, and if you've spent a fair bit of cash arranging accomodation/lift tickets/hire gera, then you dont want to injure yourself on day 1 of any given trip in a way that wil prevent you from riding the rest.

If your mumma buys you one, make sure that it has a plastic protect over the rib cage area.
I have a dainese body suit that I hardly use because its normally to hot to wear, I tend to feel restricted when wearing one as well.
I tend to wear my body suit on my first run on tracks I dont know at all, then piss it off and hope nothing goes wrong,
also I had a stack at thredbo last year in the bunny walk, found myself hugging the bike on the ground not knowing what happened, I got up and rode off with no pain/no bleeding and rode the next day thanks to my body suit
another thing is, even thou they are expensive, in the long run it will work out cheaper than the medical bills
hope that helps

i wear one its super comfortable and has great protection and mobility
you can always try a moto style roost deflector they do the same thing exept the spine guard thet some of the pressure suits have .and thier cheaper normally . they do look a bit wierd on a dh rider though . check my profile picture and see for ya self .

I've had a Dainese Pressure suit for a couple of years now and it's one of the best purchases I've made. I've only had the one big off with it but it involved the end of 6m long tree limb trying to spear me through the heart at about 40 km/h. Punched a hole in the plastic chest armour, bruised/broken/separated (never did go to the doctor - was right before a trip to Whistler) ribs and sternum. It hurt for months, and sneezing was a literal pain. I have no idea how things would've gone without the armour but I can guess probably a bit worse. Funnily enough this happened 30 seconds into a ride where a mate was hassling me for always wearing my armour.
I'd recommend actually trying on all the different makes and sizes. The Dianese was the only one that fit me properly, while a mate fits well into a 661.

i wear a dainese presure suit which i race in. my mates have one and just a few days ago it saved him from breaking his neck, he got knocked out and stuff and the docs said he was very lucky to not get a broken neck so yeh i think its a great idea.

Not trying to start a arguement or anything, but I'm just curious to how the body armour saved his neck?
I ride with 661 pressure suit in races, great confidence booster. Luckily, haven't needed it yet.

look the sixsixone sp2 is a great preesure suit i weare it and find it is very protective i went out riding all day and was wearing it . it wasnt until the last run down the hill i took it oof and rode without it and the of corse i came off the woodern drop hit a tree and karwheeled down the hill
SO YES PRESSURE SUITS ARE NESSACERY

Show her about 3 minutes of footage from whichever mountain bike video you happen to grab, and tell her you're out doing THAT on weekends.
Or just mention seatbelts.
My Dainese safety jacket, chosen because it best fitted me from 5 or 6 options, has saved me from a few potential nasties... scored a great armour-mesh-patterned rash over my left ribs from chest planting into a rock at Lithgow... probably would have busted a few ribs if I hadn't been wearing it.
I tend to ride the bike into the ground when the front wheel decides it doesn't want to grip anymore... my elbows are still in one piece too.
Even if it doesn't help protect you all that much it still gives you extra confidence which will push you harder or make you try bigger things. I've come off in rock gardens and have saved quite a few cuts and bruises from my body armour.

When I started riding I started out in one of those. It was an excellent cheaper option, if your mum is worried about cost. Since then I have purchased a pressure suit, and its been great. Im sure its saved me a broken collar bone and numerous arm injuries. Worth the moeny for sure!
Another thing is to pick the right size. Ive lost a bit of weight and mine is starting to get a bit loose. And you can tell the difference.
As someone said, they easily pay themselves off by saving on medical bills. even after 2 or 3 x-rays, its paid for itself.

I would strongly advise against a roost deflector.
They come from an age before decent body armour was available and are only designed to protect you from rocks thrown up by the motorcycle directly in front of you... clearly NOT an isue in any sort of MTB riding.
Put the money for a roost deflector towards a proper "safety jacket" (to coin a phrase that Dainese have copyrighted)
Most "Saftey Jackets" and "Pressure Suits" have hard plastic chest plates which do the same thing, which isn't really necessary given DH is undertakean as
A) a time trial
B) on bicycles
I have an older style Dainese safety jacket with the soft chest plate and haven't copped a chest injury whilst wearing it. It's also got a proper back protector.
The number one thing is that it fits correctly. This may mean trying many brands before you settle on the correct one.
Roost deflectors (or "cages") are better than nothing, but a very distant second to a suit or jacket

Your Mum doesn't want you to wear protection when riding? That is a bit odd, she is obviously spooked by the price of some of the armour out there. I recently bought a new 661 suit and sold my old Dainese suit to a young fellow getting into to downhill for $50. It doesn't smel because I wash it after each ride, it has the obvious marks on it from falling against rocks etc and it still fits perfect. Maybe you should look at getting second hand armour, the right thing shouldn't be too hard to find.
Some choose not to wear armour and some do. I highly recommend it for someone learning the sport and for someone who is great at DH. I've had many times where I've crashed and my armour has saved plenty of cuts and bruises. I've also had times where I've not worn any armour and I've spilt bulk blood.
I reckon that as time goes by and new people give racing a go, body armour will be compulsory, that isn't a bad thing in my opinion.
Does your Mum advise that you wear a seatbelt in a car? Does she advise you on wearing protection when having sex? Has she told you to wear oven gloves when pulling a hot dish out of the oven? Use some examples of how protection is necesary and hopefully you'll be wearing a kit next time you ride.;)

Just tell her if she really loves you and wants you to be safe, then she will help you get the suit! You definitely need it. Crashes are inevitable, no matter how good you are.

A good suit of body armour will help you progress in DH faster, with less scars and broken bits, than you could otherwise. There are courses where I just would not be comfortable riding on the edge on otherwise, Thredbo for example. I will ride trails I know well with less body armour (knee pads, full face and elbow guards) but even then I ride faster with some extra protection. It can get hot sometimes, but provided you wash your armour sometimes then that's not such a big deal ;)

i wear upper body armour ( some dainese thing) i find it helps alot. i dont believe it will stop bones breaking but it gives you that confidence you didnt have without it. i find it helps the most against abrasive injuries or if you shoulder slam a tree or something.
definatley worth getting if your serious about racing.

you should come to brissie for a race Shitloads of people wear them here.
i have a 661 pressure suit and its saved me plenty of times, because when i crash its usually in rockgardens so if i didnt wear armour i would have had a lot of stitches and other injuries by now because of not wearing it. only time i dont wear it is when im doing push runs, normal riding or know the track really well.
