I'm thinking less downhill/dirt jump/street and more cross country/commuter/hybrid

I know of the
Cannondale 1FG
Kona Unit
Redline Monocog range

What else is out there???

have a read in the cross country-road forums about kona units. steel may be real but they should not be failing like they are. you can also buy on one bikes complete from the uk landed for around $1500 i beleive. that price is with one-one rigid forks, one-one hubs (nothing wrong with em ive used em and never had problems) avid v brakes etc etc. definatly worth a look in my book

I've heard the monocog has a dodgie headset. Havn't heard bad reviews of the Unit, although I havn't really been looking

i know of 2 people that have had them crack in the same place plus 2 guys on here thats 4 bikes. the mono cog seems to be good bang for your buck also. are you looking at buying something or just interested in whats out there?

A bit of both. I can prob scrape together about $800, which gets me a Monocog, but not a Unit or 1FG or Monocog Flight.
I might just wait till I can get together $1500 or so, depends on whats out there.

In the Kona's defence I'm a hard-ridin' heavy bastard, running rigid forks for two years and they ride great...when they're in one piece:D

Put it this way, I'd happily buy another for the price.

There's the Orange P7 One (http://www.orangebikes.co.uk/2007bikes/p7-one.php) as well.

Needs a rigid fork.

I have an 06 Monocog, I have done about 350km(on and off road) on it since I got it for christmas. I have had no issues with the headset, from what i have been told the issue was only that the headsets weren't seated properly.
You should be able to pick up an 06 one for around $600 but there were only 17" frames available. if you can wait for the 07 ones to arrive in feb/march they will be bringing in the 29er.
I personally wouldn't get a monocog flight as the alloy frame would be a bit harsher than the steel frame, which i wouldn't enjoy.
For the money you've got you could do what I did to mine, fit a set of oury grips, stans notubes in the tyres and also a KMC K810sl gold chain. The grip's and the stan's made a huge difference to the ride and the chain makes it look cool.

Yeah they're great, they feel very snappy... :( Mine snapped through the middle of the downtube and no, my wheels almost never leave the ground... And don't worry about getting a warrantee replacement, they only come with a 2 yr warrantee. Pissed? I was.

It was replaced with a Thylacine, much better.

Maybe I will get a monocog, seems like a good bike for the price. I'll have to hunt around for an early model though, the new brown colour is god awful.

theres only 17's in stock of the 06's (dark green), I'm 5ft 10in and inseam of 84cm my seat post is about 1cm before the limit line, the reach is fine to the bars but if your taller than me you will need a 19in frame.

I don't think so. I *think* it has horizontal drops with sliding/adjustable disc mount.

Had my monocog for about 10 months now, and i love it.. A little on the heavy side, but the steel gives a nice ride- I'd definitly take it over the alloy frame on the flight model. Not bad value, and with a decent set of forks, rides very nicely. Oh, and my headset clapped out after about 6 months of average off road use, but have had no issue whatsoever with wheels/cranks (which were of slight concern being non-sealed bearing/square taper).

Looking at the Raleigh website, it seems to have an eccentric bottom bracket

the rear hub has sealed cartridge bearings and the bottom bracket is sealed as well on mine.the rear hub isn't listed as sealed but when i pulled mine apart for a look there was cartridges.

Nope, it has an EBB. I got mine at Woolys Wheels a few weeks back (I wish I'd got it somwhere else, I hate those guys) and love it. Check it:

How tall are you mate? Im 6ft6 and am grabbing a 20" 29er bike very soon. I had a ride on one very recently, and have just been blown away by the way it rides over things. Being a big person, a large frame seems very in proportion with the wheels. So anyway, from working in a bikeshop who sell a fair number of singlespeed bikes (and get to ride them) heres my basic opinion on a few.

Kona Unit: Great little rig, fairly light. Feels great for the price, although parts spec is fairly lacking for the rrp. Frame quality is decent, Dedacciai tubing is a decent touch.

Redline Flight (26"/29er): Havent ridden this one off road, but based on the models that we have in the shop, this is pretty good bang for the buck. Sanko Japanese tubing is great, keeps the bike nice and light, and it also lacks the cheapo welds and dropouts that appear on the old monocog. Look into this one.

Haro Mary SS 29er: My pick of the bunch, a great looking frame, awesome dropouts, EBB, Browny-Orange in colour, decent parts spec. The rear hub is cassette and is nice and loud too.

GT Peace: A bit el-cheapo, but for $900 you really cant go very wrong. EBB. Feel a bit high with a suspension fork wacked on the front. (Anything over 100mm). These are my least fav.

Check out Brunswick Street Cycles, Fitzroy for the full model range. (Including 1fgs aswell!)

Not sure where you are getting your assistance with fit but if you are 6'6" tall there is no way you should be on a 20" anything.
I am only 6'3" and my Ventana is a 22" with a 24.5" TT. I have just bought a 20" Zion which also has a 24.5" TT. In fact most 20" bikes I see are similar measurement in the TT.
You need to seek some serious advice before you go buying a 29er. Most have a very sloping top tube and as a result you will have substantially more seatpost extension. If this extension is too great, the leverage could lead to breakage of the frame. On top of this I would have to imagine that you would be using a 130mm stem or so to make it comfortable. 29ers are known to steer slower and a long stem will not help this situation.
I would suggest that you contact Shannon at MTBPrecision about your options for a Ventana as these come in sizes up to a 24" in standard sizing with other custom options available.
