hi,

just wondering what was your 1st bike
do you think i should go 2nd hand or buy a new bike?
i don't know what type of mtbing i want to do now
thanks
If you want to get into mountain biking, i think a hardtail is definetely the way to go, and most probably second hand (you can get some great deals).
With regards to what bike you should get, you'll get alot of different answers from alot of different people, but for a beginner id be looking to spend about $500-600 on a second hand bike. That will get you a good solid bike!
Well.. my first bike was a hunk of metal really.. not really a MTB
If you are looking for a good all around hardtail to start off with defenetaly look into buying "something" like an 02/01 Kona Stuff which should be around the 800-900 mark.
This should help you to decide which part of the sport most appeals to you. ;)
my first Mountain bike was a '96 DBR sorento(diamond back racing for those new schoolers) it was pretty sick, the winner of the XC worlds in cairns 96 had the same frame.
currently the bike is working hard getting my dad to all kinds of crazy fly fishing locations around FNQ
current spec
Diamond back 812 columbus tubes
Chris king hubs (purple ano)
mavic SUP 217 rims (those were the d521s of there day)
Judy xc fork 80 mm (long travel)
Hutchinson on the rocks II tires (2.1s damn that was fat)
STX-RC cranks(Racers Cord, wtf did that mean)
XTR lever/shifter combo (mmm 4 finger braking)
XT v'brakes front, XTR cantis rear
yellow plastic fenders front/rear(when beachsand is the main surface your riding on you need that kind of protection.)
a few notes, this bike has spent half it's life rided up and down beaches and i've never pulled apart the hubs.
'96 XTR levers and cantis feel as good as modern LX v's.
old school flat bars suck.
mine was a Mongoose Manuerver ...
it was SICK. 12.5" slalom frame ..
IRC tyres .. Sun Tour drive train .. Bar ends this thing ripped.
as for advice ... get a sturdy hardtaill ..
allows you to ride everywhere .. down everything and builds your strength and riding skills.
