Hey guys guess what!!!
its council clean up, I was on the bus going home and i spotted this!!!
soo stoked!! i have been purposly looking for a bike like this for a while..
It was pretty much rideable just sitting there. I can just leave it as it is if i wanted to ( But obviously im not going to).
Now the question lies..
What to do with it.?
i was purposly looking for somthing like this because i want to get into road riding. Is it worth it pimping this bike up with say shimmano 105 components, get new wheels, handlebars etc.
Or seeing as it is a pretty damn tank of a frame.. I should just make it a deadly commuter???
Im am soo stoked about finding this beauty.!!! the only thing i will have to change is probrably the pedals and im set!!!
such a beast its even got.. well the rim is even ... roughed up for better breaking!!! check it out!!!..check out the levers too how funky is that hahaha..
anyway im happy ..
what do you think i should do with it.
and what colour :D

Ditch reflectors/mudguards
Sand back the bars and anything that is rusty...if you can get them, maybe consider a cheap set of bars or something. Also sand back all the spokes etc...get it looking nice and shiny.
Probably not worth the whole 'pimping' thing...if you have the stuff already or can get if for a steal, then yeah, gears, cranks and wheels but if not, probably get whats on it back up and running.
Although i am not a big fan of singlespeed or fixies, this would make a mean fixie!
Last but not least, you need a big novelty horn!

Riding fixed is fine for noobz... But with brakes, not without.
You'll have some interesting moments but you'll be ok. I wouldn't recommend riding fixed without clipless or strapped pedals though.

about the pedals..
im planning to ditch them either way..
can you tell me what is the main difference between the road clips.. and the mtb ones..
because . i honestly do not know.
i think i might just go a set of spd's

Nice find mate. :D
Definite fixie candidate.
Ditch everything - well, almost. The front brake can stay.
Get at the rear brake/gear cable braze-ons with a grinder + file too.
Paint looks pretty good for its age / previous neglect - I'd just touch it up where needed and give it a good polish.
I'd probably replace the bars - they don't look too bad, but then you don't know how rusted they are internally.

yea it was definatly neglected . i looked at the jocky wheels expecting them to be worn... well no sign of wear & tear at all the jockey wheels are perfect wheels are suprisingly true cranks look fine. brake pads are well not worn down at all!!..
just rust...
poor bike.. must of lead a very boring life.. But Dont fear ill bring life back into it.!!

get rid of it before it snaps and you hurt your self. it was probably tossed for a reason:p
but if your going to keep it dont spend too much on it you can buy some great road bikes on ebay for around $500.
and as a matter of fact im thinking about selling soon mine for about that.
Ditch reflectors/mudguards
No way! Keep the mudguards as your commuter will keep you drier! Reflectors may let you ride home from the pub in relative safety without lights
PS. relative being relative ....

Autosol, steel wool, elbow grease.
Here is an example courtesy of my brother in law...
I find them at garage sales on the nutty affluent north shore and he brings them back to life, swaps the parts around, and rides them to work on the mean streets of the inner west.
I think he has just about cornered the market in Shimano 600 spares.
The POS (piece of s...) was an early attempt, $20 from Killara, currently he is working on a very nice Centurion Signet, Tange Cro Mo frame still with one of the original Araya rims...also $20 that I spied and he buyed a few weeks ago. An early morning ride around the garage sales can be fun.

Gekigengar, I have a bike exactly the same as what you just picked up. Except I've had mine since new. :p Haven't ridden it for about 17years but I am going to drag it out and fix it up to use as a cheap commuter.

I am a closet refuse-coveter myself lol. We had a recent council chuckout day (we don't have them often) and I picked up about 7 bikes of varying quality (it's handy having a ute). They were all easily fixable needing the odd new tyre and wheel trueing. I use the best of them as a comuter (Repco Traveller). But I took 4 of them on holidays recently. It's nice not having to worry about security. I have lost 2 bikes in the past at tourist parks (boltcutters, bye bye GT) and when I slip into town on my break to get some lunch I just leave it outside the Mall. I figure if it gets flogged they needed it more than me and I will slip up to the back shed and grab the next best one. I haven't lost one yet :)
I wouldn't spend to much money tarting them up for the above mentioned reason and also cause you can get a pretty good new bike with 105 running gear for about 1200 bucks-

This is my token effort at a hard rubbish build. Forks and seat are spares i had laying around but the rest is hard rubbish material (although i have a really good set of RST forks that I might chuck on...they are off the hard rubbish-great find)..they tyres were liberated from a mate. I know the feeling at Tourist Parks...but our problem is actually taking the bikes as we have little room...last effort at taking them resulted in a few dings and scratches in the bikes. We go to Wilsons Prom a fair bit and as you know, riding isnt permitted within the Park itself but for around camp, going to the beach or the toilets, its ideal. I wouldnt leave my good bike out the front of the toilets unattended for the life of me!

I'm doing my dad bike up at the moment. It looks much the same style, i'm sanding the bars, pedals, drivechain and other rusty part and then spraying them black. it should be a sweet commuter.
Have fun fixing her up
