Hey farkiners,
I've just started uni and think its a great chance to build up my fitness by riding to uni. I live in beecroft, to north of sydney near epping, and im going to sydney uni. Just wondering what routes you guys take who ride to city and around there? This morning i did i ride to just check out how i could do it and came up with riding throught eastwood etc, to get to meadowbank and then joining up with bike lane to gladesville, but after this wasnt completely sure whether to just follow victoria road or whether theres other routes.

any help would be great
cheers

I ride the opposite direction to you, but here goes.

I ride from North Sydney to Epping, or Central to Epping.

When on MTB I head over the bridge, through Crows Nest, Naremburn, by Artarmon station, back streets of Chatswood, Lane Cove National Park, then through Macquarie Park industrial area, then through Macquarie Uni and then Epping Road.

There is bike path much of the way, but some is shared lane stuff.

Alternatively, you can skip through St Leonards and go straight up Pacific Hwy to Chatswood, especially if on a road bike.

Also, you can skip Lane Cove National Park and just go up Delhi Road.

One the whole this is pretty quiet on the back streets, with just a few sections of main roads.

Bikely is without a doubt, your best source for commuting route options. Built on the Google Earth interface you can add your own or view a squillion other users commuting and road rides, as well as other rides (not so great for MTB rides geenreally as the airphotos aren't at a sufficient resolution)

he said sydney uni, not club mac! I am not certain of how you would get to st leonards from beecroft, but it's only about 30mins to USYD from there, crossing harbour bridge then through darling harbour, down pyrmont bridge rd and behind the fish markets to Glebe pt rd. Bob's your uncle. I am not sure if that would be the most efficient route, but it's one option.

Yeah, but if reverse the route, ie. Epping through Chatswood to North Sydney and over Bridge to Central you are there.

cheers for tips and website. It seems to be the same as what i discovered the other day, ie. going over anzac bridge and through pyrmont and then thru darling harbour etc. Ill just have to explore few backstreets to make the most efficient route

Another option is Epping, Eastwood, Meadowbank then across the river through Concord, Five Dock, Haberfield, Lilyfield, round the bottom of Rozelle Bay and up through Glebe. PM me if you want more details.

That is a nicer commute then trying to go victroia road.

Do not try to ride victoria road or the footpath, the back streets around there mostly run parrallel with victoria road, ride them. Best advice i can give you, and this is what i do, look at a street directory, photocopy it, mark up a route in highlighter then ride it. First time will be slow as you will need to check roads etc, but second+ time is alot faster.

I used to ride from west ryde to UTS, i only ever need to hit the victoria road footpaths to cross gladesville, ironcove and anzac bridge.

Another option is you can ride around the bay, go under iron cove bridge on the epping side and follow the bike path around the bay. First section is on tight twisty road from memory so pedal fast

If you do decide to head towards anzac bridge there is no need to go over the bridge. Split of and head towards the eastern distributer along the footpaths, there are some bike paths around there that follow the stormwater channels and will take you close to sydney uni. No need to head through darling harbour, i would even try to avoid it as much as possible.

Have fun.

If you can brave the M2, ride down beecroft road to the m2, take the m2 until Dehli road, then you can ride down to Mowbray or along Dehli, either way keep going until you get to the Pacific highway, head down to the Gore Hill Fwy/pacific highway intersection.

There is then a bike path that will be opening with the Lane Cove Tunnel that will take you almost to North Sydney, pick a road to take you the rest of the way, and ride over the bridge from there.

The return trip may be a little trickier once they close off the westbound bike lane on the m2, but there is supposed to be a back way replacing it.

It was great riding past 3 or 4 banked up trains last night. I dont think all the promotion for riding to work could ever shine a brighter light on commuting than being stuck in a stuff train for a couple of hours while cyclist after cyclist rode past !! God bless CityRail!!

Yeah, thats basically what I was suggesting. I often ride in that way in after a ride around homebush.
