View Full Version : Avid joins SRAM
News here (http://www.pinkbike.com/modules/news/?op=articleview&id=1841)
SRAM Corporation is pleased to announce the signing of a Letter of Intent to purchase Avid LLC. Avid is widely recognized as the technology and performance leader in braking systems, and this acquisition furthers SRAM’s goal of providing a full component group to the bike industry.
This'll be interesting, very interesting.
I'm a huge fan of SRAM and Avid, I love both their products, and I can't wait to see what this will bring in the future.
Now all SRAM need to do is get some cranks and hubs on the market, and they'll be a serious OEM force, hopefully we'll see more bikes with their bits straight from the factory.
What do you think?
DEATH TO SHIMANO!!!
I'm with you on that one ;)
Well, not really death, but I'd love to see another big company really give Shimano something to worry about, it'll create healthy competition, and in that competition, the end user will be the winner.
yeh competition means better products at better prices :D
yeah this is cool news, thanks Rik ive thrown it on the front page.
Be interesting to see Shimano get some healthy competition.

we got a bike built at work which we powder coated white and put all sram 9.0, then we had a pair of blue sram 9.0 hubs which we built onto white rimes with blue nipples and blue bind, so there are some srame hubs booting around, so thereve got the drivetrain figured minuse cranks and b/b coz tere are hubs and the brakes aswell, ill have 2 dig up a pic of that wheelset

They just need to assimilate truvativ next, then crank, bb's, bars and stems would almost be sorted.
I dunno about Truvativ.... I'd rather see them get FSA, then they'd really have OEM power.
And 125PHIL, the did do hubs (very nice), and they did front derailleurs too, but alas not anymore :(

Now theres something to look forward to :).

I've kinda lost track of what FSA is up to these days. Just went to their site, I didn't realise their product line was so large, and a fairly weight conscious bunch even for their hard use stuff. The bikes might not be that affordable tho'.

im pretty sure they still do front derailers, its just they dont come into the country, we got a couple only recently from rob eva when he got back form the states, well who knows it may of been some of the old stick but ill check it out, yeah the hubs are super light on this bike,
but i dont think sram should do bars and stems, i thonk with what they have got now is doing very well for them, for cranksets, i dont know, they would have 2 bring out something pretty new, coz alot of the stuff has been done even carbon cranks with the likes of FSA and pazzaz,
i think its going well coz rockshox and sram are in 'kahootz' in the manufacturing side, and now avid and sram...thats a superpower of the mtbiking industry
Mmmm superpower...
Having your gears, brakes and forks all coming from the one company would make things good for bike manufacturers, they could buy packages and get it all cheaper, which of course flows on to us.
Now how long until the BlackBox guys get their hands on Avid brakes? I wonder what we'll see from them 8)

As long as they don't start trying to merge all their shit together and make it incompatible with other companys shit, a la shitmano, then it'll be the shit. But if they do it will just be plain shit.

That's a lot of shit there mate.
As for SRAM becoming a "super power" well that reminds me of someone else starting with an "S"......

whats a load of shite?
the merge is not really going to effect a consumer at the LBS buying a set of avid breaks or a set of Pilot SL forks, the only wasy it effects the industry in my opionon is when manufacturers go to spec there bikes with certain componetry instead of going all out shimano brakes cranks shifters etc. because they are buying one product line bulk, they can go through the manufuacturer who would be incharge of the 3 popular high end products sram avid rock shox, as they are all in kahootz, then specing there bike with differents bits but still falling under the same account, not 3 seperate ones, thats the way im looking at it at an OEM piont of view beacause having the 3 companys under the roof they are one securing a very big protion of bits speced for OEM, and going through the same company would possiblt making it cheaper to spec a bike which would then maybe bring bike prices down for the consumer...
well yeah hopefully that makes sense in english

I'm uber stoked to tell you the truth. Being a long time Rock Shox fan I think its a good move! I'll be proud of running a Shimanoless bike this year!! 8)
Same here, One bike almost full shimanoless so far(gotta buy a new cassette), and every new bike I build from here on in will be running the other big S too. Plus I love my Avid, the XC machine will be running their cable discs soon
*works to make his bike shimanoless*
