Hi,

I have a sony dvd camcorder and want to edit some footage of the Aussie nationals.

I have a fairly new (about 2 months old) hp laptop which has windows video editor crap on it which should be sufficient to edit my footage.

However when i go into windows video editor and click the file it says it is not a valid format or something along those linse.

Files are of type BUP and IFO VOB and are also appearing as VTS_01_1 VTS_02_1 ??????????????

Do i need a converter to convert it to the correct format or something??

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Will

So you've got a DVD of the footage, right? What exactly are the contents of that DVD? I'm talking file names here, not what you took video of... We need to know what the file format is on your DVD.

BUP and IFO are file formats associated with DVD's. If you grab a DVD from your collection and chuck it in the computer you'll see some VOB, BUP and IFO files on there.

You need to take not of Olly's old signature - "DVD camcorders are about as useless as pussy at a gaybar". In other words, they suck for editing ;)

Hey I know on the mac you can use 'Drop2DV' to convert a myriad of file types (including VOB, IFO ect) to editable DV files.

Not sure if there is a similar program around for PC's?? Have a search and you should be able to come up with something.

This is why you don't buy DVD camcorders if you want to edit your footage.:)

Don't worry, a lot of people do, and only realise the problem after they've bought it. Your best bet is to download conversion software that changes your
.VOB files to .avi. (the .VOB files are the actual video files)

I don't know of any off the top of my head, but you need this software to first convert your DVD files to AVI. Another thought, did your camera come with a USB cable? Sometimes you can connect that and export the video into windows movie maker, and use that to capture the footage.

Hope that helps matey.

Does it come free with the Macs or do you have to buy it seperately?

it is free (does not come with the machine) you can find it at a site called http://www.versiontracker.com/ or alternatively

http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Video/Drop2DV.shtml

I agree with the comments that DVD camcorders are awful. Really only designed for people who don't want/need to edit the footage, and can't deal with computers (for putting the footage from tape onto a DVD). The list of negatives are huge, but we won't go into that. In the future, just buy normal "tape" camcorders.

Now, for converting your DVD files. Man, what a drag... You'd think it would just simply record a more basic file format such as .dv, or .avi, or .mov onto the DVD. Nope... it does the pain-in-the-ass dvd file structure system.

Here's what I use to get an editable file off of a dvd:
This applies to Macs only, btw...

Download a program called "Mac The Ripper" : http://www.mactheripper.org/
With your DVD in the computer's drive, run Mac the Ripper, choose the "Mode" button (as opposed to the "Disc" button).
On the drop down menu just under that, choose "Title Only Extraction"
You'll know you've chosen the right option if the little button with a "D" on it becomes available
This "D" button is for "De-muxing", which means, it'll take all those crappy DVD files and turn them into the respective video and audio files. Make sure you've hit/selected this button.
Choose a destination with a few gig's of room, and click "GO"
Once it's finished, you'll have your video file, an M2V, and one or more audio files (AC3s maybe?).
Now you've got to convert the M2V and the AC3's into something that's editable, since these compressed files will not be editable. Open them in a program that can handle M2V's (I use Quicktime Pro with the M2V codec installed). Export them as a MOV, or average Quicktime file. Make sure you've got LOTS of room for this... we're talking up to 100GB possibly, which should be adequate for about 2 hours of footage.
Now we have to do something similar for your AC3 files. Similar situation. AC3's are not editable. We have to convert that to a more basic file format, in this case AIFF. I think Quicktime does this as well. You might have to use a program called "AIFF from PCM" though
When you're finished all this, you'll have extracted your editable video and audio files that you can easily bring into your video editing software

Bummer you're on a PC though. I'd have no idea how to do it that way. PC's are shitty for video editing. Actually... so are DVD camcorders. Hmmm... you're kinda behind the 8-ball on this, sadly... good luck to ya.:(

.VOB files are already MPEG(2?) files so if you have an MPG editor you may just be able to copy them to your PC & edit them from there.

There is also a utility called DVDx which you might be able to use: http://www.labdv.com/dvdx/

I was just doing a search of all things farkin for some help with my newly aquired helmet cam setup.

I am using windows movie maker, which requires movies to be in a format that is different to what my camera records in. I require to change my .mov files to .avi or .mpeg.

I have been on google and downloaded a file converter, however i'm after some recomendations as to which progams are the best. Also does anyone know where to get them for free?

Another thing i've noticed in my experiments with the trial version is a drop in quality, is this normal when converting formats? It is quite noticeable especially when viewed on full screen.

Thanks for your help.

Mucho respect there Techno. Whilst I was familiar with Mac The Ripper, I did not know that it was also able to de-mux. Freaking brilliant!
