hahah yeh that would have to be the funniest thing ever. you catch them on line, and when they puff up throw them in the fire (im jokin....... ) and they blow up.
usually just salt water fish, as in flathead, leather jacket, snapper, bream, mullet for crab bait, tailor and if we are lucky the odd muddy pops out from a shelf of a reef.

I go spear fishing every now and then, but I find that I have to go even further out to the the deeper reefs to catch anything decent now. I generally will only go for coral trout but the odd spanish and doggy mackerel make good eating too.

didn't want to start a new thread, so...
has anybody ever made their own laminated wooden gun?
i'm thinking of making one in the near future and am after as many experiences as i can get.
what timber(s) did you use?
what glue did you use?
if you used a bought mechanism, what did you use?
open or closed muzzle?
if open muzzle, shark fin or euro spear?
anything you think i missed or should know before i dive in?
any feedback would be awesome.

ummm i can't help you out on this one but if you go to www.spearfishing.com.au and click forums you'll most likely get a better answer there.

I spearfish in sydeny harbour. A few good spots but im not sure how legal it is. Still lots of fun though, usually get some whiting and black fish etc. Does anyone know if it is illegal in sydney harbour?

My guess would be it's not allowed, but they say to check at your local fisheries office.
Just google it, I tried to copy & paste but it didn't work for some reason. They won't care if you're unaware too, and the fines are pretty hefty so I'd find out for sure before you go again man..

I don't think you can
Doesn't stop me and my mate going of Watsons bay though, we use hand spears though, none of this fancy new technology.

Yeh you are not aloud to spear fish in any inland waters such as creeks, dams, lakes and harbours etc.
In the little book i was just reading about it, it also said that when you are spear fishing along coastal beaches you must be within 50 meters of a headland.
Im not to sure if that applys in all states but it does in Nsw.

Good to see that you know how to spell.
That is why there are all of those signs up around the creeks now saying that you are not aloud to spear in the creeks and rivers and there are also big fines if you get caught doing the wrong thing.
Maby have a look at the rule book and learn what you can and cant do ;)

Touché. But the reason behind my killing being more hardcore is that for every Seri' you kill its a $50,000 fine, and for everyone you eat it's another $150,000 fine.
Thats a $200,000 lunch!

So far from the mark.
whether spearing is allowed in lagoons, estuaries, harbours etc is decided on a case by case basis, there is no blanket ban. best bet is to check with your local fisheries office.
spear fishing is only allowed in the last 20m of all ocean beaches, not 50!

When i brought my spear i was told by heaps of people that spearfishing in creeks and rivers etc was banned.
The signs that they have put up on the side of the rivers up here say that you are not aloud to spear in and creeks or rivers and fines will apply if you get caught.
Im only going of the information that is on the signs.
Im not sure if the signs have been puut up bythe council or the fisheries.
The little book that i was reading as well wont be much help as i just looked at the date of it and it was printed in 2004 so it is a bit out dated now.
And yeh sorry mate i got the 50 meters thing mixed up.
