.243 racing's hardtail (see if you can find the story about them and da bomb...).
The Le Toy's are very nice frames, Brooklyn have some burly pieces of machinery, and the scream is a good value, tough frame.
Evil Imperial or the Endless Lifetime frame. Evil cos it's super burly and apparently a sweet ride and Endless because it's pretty much the perfect steel street/jump hardtail frame.
So many DH / big travel bikes you could do up, far too many to list:)
God, I'd love a Banshee Morphine :)
mmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

ok some real 'boutique' bikes, as in custom made.
www.sevencycles.com <-- only XC but the detail is nuts
www.IFbikes.com <-- as above
www.hoodbikes.com <-- insane drop bike
www.curtisbikes.co.uk <-- poms know how to make dirt jump and trials bikes
www.endlessbikes.com <-- sic street/jump/everything bike
www.cliftcat.com <-- bikes your wont break
bikes that are sick but not made to order (off the self bikes)
www.evilbikes.com <-- the best engineered hardtail on the market
www.platet-x-bikes.co.uk <-- a hardtail for every dirt jumping/trials/urban need
www.cortinacycles.com <-- lots of cool designs
www.orangebikes.co.uk <-- yea...
www.titusti.com <-- carbon injected titanium exogrid what?
www.dmrbikes.com <-- solid jump bikes
bike listed that i'd say aren't really 'boutique' bikes it's just that we don't see much of them here.
Banshee <-- pretty common, not made inhouse but still tough as.
Da bomb <-- see above, not to mention all there designs are plucked stright out of some catalog. top R(ip off) and D(uplicate) work there.
Gutty arn't those thylacine hardtail frames like $1600? i'd love to ride bike from an aussie company and thylacine stuff is as custom as they come but thats an expensive hardtail frame.
(oh wait i do ride an aussie bike)
(*note not sure if they are actualy welded in australia but we know they are painted here at lease)

The D8 was actually made by keewee bikes in NZ. I'm pretty sure they have a new design, maybe a turner 4 bar type rear.
I'll try and find a their web site.

So is this a boutique bike? Or just JensonUSA's home brand knockoff of the Santa Cruz Chameleon.
It's the JensonUSA HT 5.0 and with welds that good and the fact it costs less than half what a Chameleon costs ($US530 for a Chameleon, $US250 for the HT 5.0) I reckon it's a goer :)
Check out some more detail shots here. (http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product.asp?number=18207)

I reckon if this doesn't prove just how high a quality bike the Taiwanese can turn out, I don't know what does.

Wouldn't be suprising, happens all the time.
ethos! liquid! genesis, tho i don't think they are around any more, they were doing custom frames and shit out of the gold coast - only ever saw one of their bikes in a brissie shop (not too shabby), though my little bro got them to put canti studs but on his bmx that he built up - welding looked pretty good and never farked up.

Not to mention the perfection of their suspension models.

i love yeti and santa cruz. i've never seen any around melbourne. i know there are some but still haven't run into any. i reckon we get the short straw when it comes to quality bikes that aren't huge names. its getting better though, 5 years ago it was impossible to get anything good haah

Matter of fact, don't call them any of the above. I love my Dabomb.
