surely everyone here is qualified to give medical advice.

Somewhere around 8 weeks to heal, depending on your age and a multitude of other factors. If you want it to take longer race on the weekend

sternum ... if it hurts too much, don't ride. Not much else to say. It will take longer to heal thyself. It's a bit like a coccyx ... can hurt like a mongrel, only rest and time, rest and time.

Stay off your bike for a few weeks, at least. Some people even have full upper body casts, but I guess yours is just cracked.

my mate broke his a while back and i think it was 6 weeks he stayed off the bike for just because of the pain and the fact a decent bump could make it stab his heart, he didnt do anything big or that dangerous for a few weeks after getting back on the bike too

How do you know you've "cracked it" and it's not just bruised ?

Hey mate,

I thought I had cracked my sternum 2 months ago because every time I breathed in deeply or tried to do a sit-up from the ground, it hurt like hell (*TIP: Do NOT sneeze under any circumstances!!!! - you will wish you were dead!). Mine turned out to be some form of nerve damage behind the sternum. Push on your sternum with your hand - if it hurts/moves, then it's the sternum which is cracked. If it doesn't hurt so much when you press it, then it is probably similar to my injury. Either way, I would not recommend riding at all for the next few months. Sternum injuries take a longer time to heal than most other bones (due to the ribs moving constantly with your breathing - makes it harder to mend). They are also one of the most painful. Give it some rest mate otherwise you will just increase the healing time. - Mike.

You could always aim for a hard hit on the weekend, give it a proper break and see if you can't deflate your lungs... That's always fun.

Give it a month or two... Talk to your doctor... blah blah blah.

nah, f**k it why not race. I mean its only like you could crash, take a hit or so on and only make it worse for yourself therefore resulting in a longer recovery period off the bike. Stuff it, put a teaspoon of cement in your cup of cordial and harden up bitch.
In all seriousness, why would you even think of riding let alone racing with such an injury. You will be breathing heavier which will cause more pain and the shocks and jolts....dont even bother. Take the time to let it recover to avoid f**king it up more and suffering a longer time off the bike

i had freind who i used to do boxing with who broke his sternum, extremely painful and very dangerous if you damage it further, give it lots of time to heal !!

Umm... he did and he had a cracked sternum...
Kerin I'm not a doctor but I'd say if you had a substantial crash on the weekend (pretty likely because I'm there :p ) and you hit your chest you could risk a lot more damage, that 661 pressure suit won't cover for your sternum ;) .
Personally i wouldn't risk it, but it's up to you...

Sorry it wasn't evident from the original post. If you do have a radiologically proven fracture of the sternum, this indicates at least moderately severe trauma. That may sound like it's stating the obvious, but without being too alarmist, it is also a predictor of more serious unrecognised injury including contusion of the heart. See a doc, get a blood test (he/she'll know which one) and you really shouldn't get back on your bike until you're checked out.

I cracked my sternum playing footy when i was 19, i was back on the field in 2 months. If it is cracked stop kidding yourself, there is no way you will be able to roll over anything (bar a smooth surface). If you still not convinced go drop off the gutter in front of your place then bunny hop back up. that should let you know just a small portion of the pain you will be in. lol

Yer give it time mate. No use risking it really. Just rest and you'll have much less time spent doing nothing than racing this weekend and damaging it more
