We've been asked (quite a few times now) to make adapters to attach 20mm through-axle forks to standard skewer holders as found on roof racks and ute floors etc (all know what I mean?)

These puppies are retailing (from what I can see) at well over $70 and I imagine ours will end up much much less.

A few questions then and any comments are appreciated.

Are they widely used?
Are they popular/wanted?
Are they widely available?
If available what sort of price have you seen them for?
Is it worth making "bolt-down" models or simply sticking with the ones that fit into existing holders?
Would people prefer painted (red) or zinc plated?
How many do you want to order now as a pre-production run? *cough, cough*

Cheers

I've used a Hurricane fork up for years. Gotta be the best and safest way to transport a bike IMO. Especially in the back of a ute/truck over long distances. No tiedowns compressing your fork, no banging into or being tied down with other bikes(no bike damage) and they look "trick as" while your cruising down the highway on your way to the nats...
Also a good way to put a 20mm axled bike on roof racks.

Don't recall what i paid for it but i remeber i couldn't get on in Oz. I ended up ordering direct from Hurricane.

I bolted mine to a standard QR fork holder. Though a direct mount version would be more thief proof.(the mount would be safer, not your bike....... :P )

Mine is powder coated and very rusty, maybe Zinc would be the way to go, but zinc doesn't come in pretty colours.....

Anyway, i still have this if you wanna look Grip. It is a QR20 model though. No removable axle.

Hey Matty I wondered when we'd get to chat again. Howzit going all up?

And thanks for the input too. I thought they were a great idea but am a little underwhelmed by the response here on Farkin. So far 70 views and only your one comment... maybe they're not worth making up?

As for seeing yours if there's any chance of a pic EMAILED to mail@gripsport.com (rather than posted here) I'd appreciate it. Don't go to any trouble though... next time the camera is in hand perhaps.

Cheers, mate.

There's a market for it.

Also, Grip, I'm going to get into contact with you again about the discussion we had via email 6 weeks ago. I'm back on my feet now so I can start getting around...

Just as a note, I think Hurricane gear is being brought in by Manitou.

I think there's a market, yes, but then there's also people like me who feel roof-mounted bikes is too risky. My family do it, but I'd rather mine go in the boot/back seat.

Well that's about all I want to know. I'll get a batch of 20 through next week, some for the reps to show about and the rest can go here on Farkin if folks want them.

We've decided that seeing as though they're "outside" jiggers they will be plated... "gold" zinc.... rather than painted (thanks for that Gutty) and the first lot wont have the packaging etc. If there's any interest I'll post a pic so people know what we're talking about.

I've got a couple of the QR versions for standard dropout forks ($70 each) and I used to use them all the time. It was easy to secure a couple of bikes in the back of the ute and just drive off. They're not much good now that I have a 20mm fork though.

I'd buy one of the 20mm versions but I'd probably only use it on longer drives or when there's a few bikes to carry. It's a bit time consuming taking the front wheel on and off, especially if your driving around to a few different riding spots.

I'd prefer bolt down and zinc plated but I'm not too fussed either way.

Thanks DD. They will be plated and I'll put a few "bolt downs" through too... and see how they go.

Yep the wheel-on wheel-off issue is a problem, but if you're going to use this sort of system there really is no alternative.

I know SOME DH bikes will fit on the Thule style "wheel-in" roof racks (we do that ourselves sometimes) but other than going for a one or two-bike towbar carrier the ways of carrying/transporting bikes is pretty limited.

Cheers for that, Gutty. When I asked for the pic I didn't realise you'd included the "fork-up" link in you original reply... sorry bout that. But your pic actually made it much clearer that their web piccies anyway.

Stay well.

Ooops! Just saw your next post too... directed at Rik. Thanks for jumping to my defence, Gutty, but Rik's cool and has actually been very supportive of me and GS. I think he was simply letting me know that there WAS another brand being distributed and the cost... as a point of reference for me.

So thanks to you both.

DH_MTB... are you thick? Look at the rest of this thread and please tell me exactly how YOUR posts are at all relevant to the questions I asked. For one thing your $60-80 price tag is NOT better value than the $75 I mentioned... and for another thing I was trying to gauge the interest in the product itself NOT have you make a judgement call as to where they should be bought. Please try reading the thread before you post or at the very least, stop wasting forum space altogether and THINK first.
