Gday all,
ive got a question about ROAD riding!!! seeing as just cruising down a big hill on a DH bike doesnt really get ones fitness levels up, does anyone do road riding for fitness like me or am i just alone on this one? if not road, what does everyone do for fitness, thats if you do anything!?

Where to begin, Gym/cardio, kickboxing, and......no thats about it. Mountainbiking in itself is enough for a persons fitness though.

I know a hill with a 30 degree gradient you can try and ride up on your DH bike if you want fitness.

I do road riding, not a lot, but it is a lot easier to get out on the road for an hour than to drive half an hour to the trails etc.
I bought a road bike, and it really is far more pleasureable riding a proper road bike than a mtb (even with slicks) on the road.

Except if your like me... riding the road constantly scanning for gutters / roundabouts or anything possible to jump. It tends to eat thru roadie wheels and tyres...
For fitness/strength training i do speed ball and boxing work outs. Hopefully ill be getting a new Hardtail XC rig soon so i can start doing short XC rides as well.
Road riding really isnt my thing...

cool, some good ideas for when it gets cold there. i just find it so much easier to pop out and do 50 odd kays in a couple of hours than getting driven to the forest or something like that.

I do about 2-3 xc rides per week, go the gym at least twice
this usualy consists of mainly weight work as ima weak girl:p no joke......
lats/biceps, triceps, quads.......well lets just say prety much anything.
Generaly spend alot of time stair climbing, and running.
spend one day at least if not both days of the weekend dhiling.
and when I have the time I mess around at bmx tracks.........sounds like alot now i look at it.

I try to do about 20km a day on the road bike (or a good 5km of dirt / soft sand riding on my HT).
I have been doing it for about a week, and I can already notice a distance. My average speed has increased by about 5km/h (I suggest you get a computer thing, to give you real results about any achivements).
I'm glad I started, not going to spot anytime soon.

i do running 3 times a week usually between 6 and 10 k
i do two xc rides during the week
then bmx and downhill on the weekend
ive been riding road for 2 years as well as downhilling for 10 years
i ride a its bout 300+ ks per week and race most weekends
its made me a lot fitter lighter and helped heaps with my downhilling.
also racing is the best workout for me it really is a shock to the system it helps a lot i do heaps of interval training when i don't have a lot of time for big rides and the downhill after a big climb is very rewarding and fun 80-90 kph is crazy fun on a roady

I commute into work on the hardtail every day, still on the knobblys too. Makes for better exercise or something apparently.
Usually when im in at work i hit up the gym 3 days per week. Need to build my weeny upper body, as ive been concentrating on my lower body for far too long (ice hockey, mtbing, running and climbing). So incline press, lat pulldowns, lat pullups, chinups, barbell rows etc etc.

i think i need to work on my hamstrings and calves (are they the main muscles in a stroke??) maybe interval training on my roadie, sprints, and hill climbs would do it? does anyone know of any hammie and calve strengthening exercises that can be done at home?? i dont want to have to go to the gym every day.
your calves only contribute about 10 % off your pedal stroke but if you must get bigger ones try hanging your heals of a step and doing leg raises as well as squats with and without weights to realy get a good leg work out sprint intervals will help too and make sure you stretch.
