gibsons is the best for sure the les pauls are awesome
i love the classical/ electric Martin D15.
Better than, well.... you know. Its awesome
Many of the fenders also kick ass (specifically classic American Telecaster with the white fretboard)

I've voted Gibson, because my Les Paul is my baby, but, different tunes call for different guitars.
I think the Fender Jaguar comes in a close second.
You can never have enough guitars.

damn non grestch liking hippies...
I voted Ibanez, which is my choice for Bass, love the Sound Gear basses. Any other type of guitar I would be voting for Gibson. I especially like the Gibson Les Paul, Hummingbird for acoustic and I also love this Wes Montgomery (http://www.gibsoncustom.com/flash/products/archtops/WesMontgomery/WesMontgomery.html) by Gibson

Where the hell is BC Rich? haha, love them. US ones only though - the Japan ones have a really bad sound.
Gibson comes in second for me, so that got my vote.

BC Rich are the fugliest axes in the history of man kind...
I play an ibanez RG1570, Maton and Cole Clark acoustics, plus my guitars that i have made in these past few years.

No, the warlock's shape makes me think "13 year old metal head"
Personally i hate most pointy guitars, even though Dimebag is my idol!
Ibanez, no question.

i would do nearly anything for one of the vintage white falcons
Ibanez, no question.

gibson for sure. I play a Yamaha RGX 220dz nothing to brag about but its still an alright guitar.
http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/8106/rgx220dzmtbwd9.jpg
and after playing it for 3 years I'm not a huge fan of floating bridges! ive just taken off the screws on the neck so i dont have to use the anoyingly small tuning method
err what about Jackson, randy rhoads is gonna be pissed too Jackson ftw.
RR is god!
Jacksons are good for metal, being a metal player myself i found Ibanez rg1570 was alot better than what jackson could offer at the same price.
yeah i have been playing ibanez for years but when i played the rr3 rhoads i was very impressed hopefully it will be my next guitar i found it has a faster neck and i found it was heaps better for pinched harmonics and solos in general.
The pinch harmonics are because the pickups are hotter than most ibanez guitars.

in my opinion the gibson les paul and flying V2 are the 2 coolest guitars
plus the flying V2 has boomerang shaped pickups

First of all, uh I dun have the cash for a DECENT guitar yet, and my mind changed from time to time as the ultimatae guitar. I do however play a pawnshop Yamaha Pacifica and I make it SQUEAL!
Fender, hmm good for just about everything except hard rock (G n' R)
and metal and the more hard fatter sounds. I havn't heard a strat really used for metal like that.
Gibson
Mmmm gibson.. I dunno I love the sound of the Les Paul, it really sings but unless I have some ridiculous growth spurt( I'm only 5"2/3, like 160cm, 14 Years) I won;t be able to sling one over my shoulder and play a gig untill im like 20... Which is quite a let down. SG's? I dunno they have a very particular sound, which I am not too fond of...
Squier by Fender AND Epiphone by GIbson
These two, will never be worth the money. EVER
ESP These are fun to play, especially with EMG's can get some pretty nice pinch harmonics out of these, but are very metal based so If thats your style, well thats your style but I wouldnt go for one If you want an allround guitar.
Yamaha! I do own a Yamaha, Pacifica 112J, it's about 20 years old (pawnshop) and still plays great. Most comforotable neck I have ever played. Has a hum too, so you can just muster out some nice Hard rock/metal tones, great practice, beginner, go-to guitar.
Rickenbacker Hmm, never played a rickenbacker, they don't seem to be too common but I don't like the sounds I hear from them in recordings so.. hmm I dunno
Ibanez These are smoooth. Play them in stores all the time, and they make me sound much better than I really am,feel pretty nice (could be the ridiculous 08 guage strings they wack on them to be good for shreding but eh)Nice for the Vai-Satch sorta style (obviously)
Peavy Never played a peavy, don't think I ever will. They are a bit of a background guitar eh? Not too mainstream
GretschHmm. Undecided about these. Must play them right to make them sound allright.
Now for the other brands, not in poll
PRS
From what I hear about PRS, they are dream guitars. They happen to be at dreaming prices too. Ridiculous like 5 grand for a Custom 22?? Sound great on recordings, apparently like a mix between a strat and a Les Paul. Interesting.
BC Rich Somebody said something about BC Rich? Why?
They sound , horrible. They look, horrible. They are, horrible.
Acoustic:
Martin These are sweet. Played a few, including a D40.. so sweet. If I rack up the cash someday I will buy one. .
Maton I'v got one of these! I got an Em225c, tis nice. The body on the (E)M225(C) is ridiculously soft though, Queensland maple. Its a nice, clear guitar, comfortable. Sounds like a bell. Great for fingerpicking too because it's got a wide fingerboard/ string width/spacing.
Uh. I cant think of any more at the moment.... oh yeah
Gibson Acoustic Never have played one. Never have seen one (in reality) they seem to be quite common in the USA however, must not be a high enough demand to import them to Aus, probably because they allready ship Martin, and they'd have to compete with Maton as well :D Good on Aussie brands.
That's probably enough for now. My posts tend to ramble on and on and on sometimes. hence why I have 4?? If that. Hmm My fingers are sprained and I cant play yet... damnin

Even though i'm a drummer of 10 years I still play guitar here and there.
I've always wanted a Les Paul Studio but the only thing that turns me off them is the weight! Stratocasters would be next in line.
One thing that everyone forgets is what amp the said guitar is running through and since i'm a real purist it has to be all valve circuits and channels.
Strat = Fender amp
Les Paul = Marshall
(atleast that's what I believe anyways)

Music man (basses), I've got a pre - Ernie Ball and it's my baby. What I'd most like is a 5 string Aria pro 2 with EMG's. (No prizes for guessing who this was influenced by :D )
Takamine accoustics
Yes a PRS custom would be my dream guitar... and I'm still dreamin.

Yeah thats what I meant. My teacher has an oldie squier tele that he picked up for like 150 in Ireland?? the pickups are HOT. They scream. Real nice for slide (which is what he has it set up for) I guess a lot of guitars have dropped in standards over time. (this may be controversial) but from what I have heard, I still think the 50s-60s Les Pauls were the greatest. Yes I have played one I think it is a... dunno 55-56? had p-90s.. sounded saweeeet. Jap squires were fantastic, some would even argue they were better than the same years American Fender Strats! But of late, yes they suck bollocks.
Im a traditionalist, I love strats and tele's. Yeah i know, same old, but these are classic for a reason!
I would dearly love to have a play of John Suhr's guitars (http://www.suhrguitars.com/guitarGallery.aspx?gallery=1). He was a Fender custom shop luthier and now he does his own custom guitars - he has some reputable endorsees on his program too!
This thread is of no consequence as not every body will agree on the "best" guitar, but for all those who do actually know something about guitars, you should pay close attention to his stuff - pick ups and amps too!

Do you think the Les Paul Studio is too heavy??? Lucky you don;t want a standard.
Heavy guitars are fine if you have a decent wide strap (and with les pauls, lockons are a must, don't want a snapped headstock because of a strap coming off).
As for the amp thing...........I think some of the best strat sounds have been through Marshalls, but then its all down to individual sound.
I always find it funny though that people put down some amps because they aren't 100% valve circuits, but then go and stick something like a tubescreamer in the front end for overdrive.

Man, I wish i could just get to touch one, let alone play it - if i had a spare 6ish grand I'd soooo get one... or bike bits... RARR talk about being torn between two worlds. But I did play a 6120 Nashville and a G6128 Duo Jet through a TS-9 and a Vox AC-30, ever since then I've had dreams of owning a gretsch... the sorts of dreams that require a trip to the dry cleaners! :p

Nah Fender just own Jackson. Since they have owned them, no changed to the factory have been made and all the workers have stayed. It is still kind of on its own but Fender own it. It definitely deserves to be in the poll.
Fender also own Gretsch. That doesnt mean they should be in the category "Fender" either. They are 3 very different guitars.

No, I'm having a dig at the tube purists who then go and stick a transistor effect in the front end. All the while bagging any amp that isn't full valve circuitry.
For the record, I love the tubescreamer, not as much as the Fuzz Face or Big Muff, but the TS-9 was a sweet pedal.

I'm also into Ibanez guitars.. they totally rock.. I've been thinking about getting an RG, or maybe an SZ

I thought that a TS-9 was more to boost the signal to the amp - as in using one on a full valve amp will allow you to get the overdrive sound at a lower volume? I've had very little experience with them though...

Bingo, but can be used on any amp to get a tube-ish sound.

Fender deluxe's sound pretty fat - but have you considered an Vox ac-30 or AC-50 combo? I played an AC-30 once (as previously mentiond) and the thing really gets a super awesome rich overdrive when you crank it to about 8ish... I've never heard a bad thing about them either (except for late 90's models that were made in japan overheating or some shit, but thats apparently fixed now)

Thats exactly what a TS-9 does. But there are amps that do exactly the same thing that are shuned by purist because they aren't an all tube circuit.
Thats what I'm getting at.
Ajay,
I've been considering selling the Marshall, as I have no need anymore for such a big set up. I've always wanted something along the lines of a Fender Bassman. Problem there is that its another loud amp, which is what I don't need.
Have you looked at Orange Amps, another great sounding amp. Not cheap, but I love them. They come in combos as well as head/box.
I'll probably stick with the marshall though and keep a powerbrake to keep volumes respectable.
So do we need a seperate, best effects pedal thread??

BOSS Turbo Distortion booyaah
I like it.. it gives me the rad punk sounds I'm after..
The Blues driver is also kinda cool.. you can throw them on top of each other and get a real dirty feel.
Most other pedals I used don't pan out so well... anything really within the BOSS range kinda kills it, but I'm not a big effects guy
edit: while you're talking amps, what's a decent amp I can get for gigging, but on a budget.. an amp that will be loud enough to get over the drums (mainly for parties and shit, at gigs you've got mic's.. as I'm sure you all know.. anyway.. any suggestions?)

09-05-2007, 09:35 AM
budget is basically whatever the bare minimum is, which I don't really know but lets say I have a couple of grand to play with, but cheaper is better for me.
The sound is punk rock, so anything from blues to metal can work. I want something with kind of an old school feel, but with a heavy bottom I guess.. kinda like old school Bad Religion with a Pennywise beefiness to it
I've been playing on a Randal stack my mate owns, and that's pretty cool, but the sound is too metal for my liking (but not enough to steer me away from the set up, it just wouldn't be my first choice).

Yeah, looked at Orange, Mesaboogie, etc, if I was to spend that sort of coin id get a Custom Audio or an Ulbrick amp though, i can only afford something in the 1200-2000 sort of range... the only 2 ive really seen that fit the bill so far are the ENGL 50w and the Fender Deluxe combos. THough im sure id be well served with either, just fishing around to see if there is something I missed.
And yeah, we need seperate threads haha - possibly a sub forum considering the amount of music threads!
