Just a lazy sunday doing assignments and farkin'ing

Rode to KFC to pick up some tasty lard.

Get home and see my dog barking like mad at this wall hanging we have on our pattio, i laugh for a bit and then BOOM a snake jumps out of there!! I chased it around for a while with a broom until it hid behind an old double bass in the corner. It's about 1.2m long and brown on top and yellow underneath - what do I do now?!?!

dude you either need to get a mongoose (the animal not the bike) or failing that the a-team that is of course if you can find them.

or call animal control.

Or get your gun, or hit it hard a couple times with a big block of wood/shovel/baseball bat/ something heavy and hard.

Save dying for later, get a snake catcher from the pages.

What a stupid suggestion. Get a mongoose.

Problem solved, with the help of my dog and a broom I chased it up a palm tree about 5 mins ago

If it comes down, pin it with a rake, broom or shovel and then cut its head off. We did that when a snake wrapped itself around the axle on our car when we were camping (strange, I know) and it managed to survive and drop off 2 and a half hours later at home.

Be careful though, the head can stay alive for hours afterwards, we put it in a plastic bag and then chucked it in the bin.

Cutting its head off is acctually pretty dangerous.. like two years ago in the news a guy had one in his bathroom and cut its head off and then it still bit him...and he died.

Which is why I said to be careful cos they can stay alive for hours afterwards...I'm not saying get down with a pair of nail scissors to do it, I mean a good strong jab with a shovel.

Why the fuck would you kill it? Chances are it's not venomous and even if it was the obvious solution would be to remove it, not kill it. It makes me so pissed off when people kill animals just because they are taking our pwecious space.

snakes are protected so you should leave killing it as a last resort.

for what its worth, big blunt objects are the worst way to kill a snake and only fools would try and get close enough to do so. you need a nice green stick (green as in young and bendy, not the colour green), and you wack it over the back.

Okay, so any random civilian is going to be able to say 'oh that snake is only harmful to fluffy bunny rabbits and little duckies, I'll just let him live at my house/in my garden'. Most people see all snakes, regardless of whether they are venomous or not, as a predator to themselves, their family and their pets.

And remember... I only tormented/ chased it for a while. It is now planning revenge from the top of a palm tree...

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
"Chances are it's not venomous." Sounds to me..if its brown with a yellow belly thatd be this harmless snake called the Eastern Brown. Its only the second most venomous snake in the world. Dead in half an hour matey.

But don't believe my word....go ahead and let one bite ya:p

yup, good one. the eastern brown that climbed a palm tree, you'd think if you had no idea yourself you wouldnt try and tear down other people's advice.

on that alone you can be assured its not venemous (they'll still bite you though ;) )

he posted that whilst I was in the middle of writing mine. ahem....let me have a bit of breathing space here! Well if it climbed a tree then alright.

As far as I know there arent many snakes that are harmless, big, brown with yellow bellies. It's just as dumb to assume its harmless. Hell....dumber.

1.2m isnt really that big, and given that its a snake hes bound to have overestimated it. furthermore, lots of pythons are brown and theres a gazzillion snakes that have light brown/yellow stomachs.

dont assume it harmless, no but i dont see how this translates to "lets go kill it right away" (not that you necesserily said that, just the general sentiment in this thread), for me it says "well leave it alone and go have a think about it" (which is what the poster has essentially done, although he could have been more careful initially)

You do have a point there, Australia is the only country in the world where venomous snakes outnumber non-venomous ones, but still, it's no excuse to kill them. The "lets cut it's fuckin head off with a shovel," red-neck attitude shits me. Why not kill eachother? other people pose much more risk to our safety.

I swear we've had a kill it vs don't kill it argument before. If anyone can get a link for that thread it'd be good, save us some time.

EDIT: Realising how lazy that sounds. I had a brief try.

Oh you're both right....killing the snake is uncalled for. I wasn't going against that. Just can't assume a snake is harmless until you know exactly what it is. Ive been so close to being bitten by browns many times building in the bush in suburban Sydney. They really are everywhere and a very common snake to find in ones backyard.

But yes, don't kill it, get someone to relocate it properly.

Don't kill it ... that is sooo unnecessary ... really - do you need to ??

Show it a way out and let it go - wave a stick at it if you need to ... let the dog chase it ...

Failing that ... I'd suggest a nice sweet chilli dipping sauce for the bbq'd fillets.:p ;)
