I disagree. They're doing the same in BMX racing after the Olympics to try and eliminate slingshotting.

That will change a few riders' outlook on racing 4 X! I think in the interest of entertainment it may be quite good. It will make the guys who are good at race starts earn it even more.
I like the idea.

WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the gate is an integral part of racing. (ok i have been practising gates alot so it kind of makes me bias). How can they possibly eliminate a cadence gate from bmx racing???? surely not, however i challange someone to take on the entire bmx community world wide to change the gate style on an international level.

As for 4x, having ridden cadence and random gates, a random gate leaves little room for skill within the gate start area. What can we do, just put pressure on the gate and pedal out when it drops? such a dissapointment when compared to a cadence gate.

Dont get too discouraged yet as I know they were testing a gate that had a random pause before the beeps started of like 1.5 seconds so it is still a cadence gatejust trys to eliminate slingshotting

- Slingshotting is when someone pulls back before the gate has dropped basically to try get a run up.

Maybe instead of killing one of the basic skills of 4X/BMX, how about they have a person ENFORCING slingshotting rules.

If you slingshot, you should be DQ'd.

Then you eliminate slingshotting, but leave the integral skill in place.

Because the rule states that you must remain stationary untill the voice commands have finished this is to stop those nazi officials out there from DQing you without good reason as even someone that doesnt slingshot will leave the gate before it has started to drop. So a slingshot is technically allowed as long as you dont pull back to soon.
Im guessing they are just looking for a best of both worlds approach.

Slingshotting is when your doing a gate and the first movement your bikes make is backwards. I found this video (http://www.bmxvideo.net/cgi-bin/ImageFolio4/imageFolio.cgi?action=view&link=Videos&image=Analysis_SlingShot.wmv&img=&tt=mpg) which compares the two styles of gates. The traditional snap vs the slingshot.

Look at it this way - instead of eliminating an arguably fundamental skill of MTNX, it will also introduce a new one. I reckon random gates will mean a new element comes into play in 4X, testing reflexes and start ability (without having to slingshot).

Might even reveal some new talent too... the start could make or break :)
