View Full Version : LX Front Derailluer worth upgrading over Alivio?
I am currently running an alivio front derailluer and have the opportunity to purchase an LX Front derailluer second hand for quite a good price. My question is basically: is there a noticiable difference between alivio and deore LX front derailluers?
Cheers.

yes, definetly. i run one myself and find shifting tonnes better. i have one for sale myself (wink wink), i'll beat the other guys price if your interested. but yes, they're good. only reason i'm selling is cause i run singlespeed.

one of the main reasons i am considering it is that when i shift from 1st to second i have to push past second and on occasions it has taken a while to switch over. I also find that some times when peddaling downhill on a rough track i will get to the bottom and notice that the chain is on first and shifter on second and i had started in second. I am only interested if the upgrade will be more accurate and not run into the troubles i have experienced with alivio.
It could also be that your chainrings are worn or the chain is dodgy. I am no mechanic, just an idea.

Its a fairly new bike and i have a six week service in like a few days when i plan to get the part fitted if i get it so i will get them to look into that. thanks.

Definitely worth it...
I did exactly the same upgrade. Then went to an XT instead of the LX and got the same improvement.
If you can, go straight to an 04 model XT instead.

yep, im running the alivio FD and i hate it, im having the same problems as you. At all of my services i have got it fixed but a few hours later it runs like shit. I'm planning to get the 04 model XT, i think they have them on phantom at a good price.
The price i am getting it at is farely affordable and as much as i may like to get the 04 XT i dont think i have enough cash the only reason i am getting the second hand LX is that its in good condition and i have cash lying around to spend. So its pretty certain that i will probably get it. Thanks.

The 03 LX is actually more expensive than the 04 XT.
*go figure*
When I got my XT it would have cost me an extra $25 to get an LX instead.

I doubt LX front derailluer is 119 because on Phantom cycles (an aussie bike shop) an XT front derailluer costs 70 and deore 50 so i figure LX would be around 60 brand new. Maybe you are confusing it with rear?

Current prices:
(quoted from Cecil Walker Cycles)
LX - $90.99
XT - $71.01
I wonder which one they're selling more of.
that is very wierd....is there an actual reason for the prices being like....like is XT still better than LX in this situation...

XT is always better than LX.
It's the fact that the store still has old stock of the LX, which they would have bought when the AU $ was lower, now they've bought the 04 stock while the $ is good and therefore can buy it cheaper.
(I guess)

i doubt it they can get rid of them.
Well they are obviously not going to get rid of them selling them at a higher price than the better model. So i suppose they might end up cutting their losses and selling them cheaply or selling them at the 90 dollar price to ppl who dont have a clue about whcih model is better.....but that would be pretty slack if the shop did that.

or they bought XT in bulk therefore can sell them cheaper
theres no point. u mainly use the rear der. if ur doing XC u should change it but otherwise there's no point!
I am doing XC, and plus even on other style of riding it is a pain in the arse becasue like i said i will get to the bottom of a rocky track and it will have gone back into first when i started off in second.

It makes no difference what it's being used for. If it doesn't work properly it needs to be fixed or replaced.
My original Alivio deralleur didn't work, end of story. Made no difference if I used it for.
But the XT shifts just as well as my rear one does.
