View Full Version : Is Leaving your Bike in Hot Car OK?

I've recently starting taking my bike to work in the car each day so I can go ride either at lunch time or after work, but I'm a little worried that it might be bad to leave it in a hot car in the sun all day. Will be forks and shock be OK, will lube melt out of the chain or hubs?

I know it sounds kinda stupid but I did hear an urban myth of someone's tyre exploding in the car.:o So anyone know or experience bad stuff?

I leave my bike in the car for days at a time for the same reasons you said and really can't imagine the lube melting out of the chain/hubs/forks/etc.

As for the tyres exploding... it has happened before but is unlikely. A friend of mine had his tyre explode one day when it was in a trailer on a 40deg day but they were right on their highest recommended pressure (maybe even higher). All it did was blow the tyre out though, no damage to any other bikes or his rims. Being inside your car, it could possibly damage something but I doubt it.

Probably your biggest concern is your Grips melting and going all sticky. Yuckkkkkk.

What brakes do you have? I have heard about issues with juicies and hot cars.

i think i had some issues with the rubber in maxxis SRY tyres breaking down (the structure of the rubber) from being left im hot cars.

they felt very 'gummy' even after they had cooled and the knobs became very easy to tear off. (compared to new fresh tyre.

but that said remember that most bike parts are shipped in containers that can get very hot sitting on the deck of a ship for days on end. so most gear has probably been heat treated already.

I had an issue with my hayes 9 brakes where the brake fluid heated up, and then blew the little master cylinder pin out - thereby losing all ability to brake.

however that was a very hot summer's day - probably 35 degrees outside, and a well sealed car.

Me too! (They were Hayes 9's as well! I don't think I had a spacer between the calipers... but I can't be sure.)

Don't trust hydraulic brakes in a hot car!

If it is a real Hot Car then all availbale space should be filled with subwoofers/amps & the like & a bike couldn't possibly fit.

Sorry :o

Sorry :o

Not right, the only cars that have REALLY big sound systems cost LESS than the stereo. Gemini's, Hyundais, Kias.

Not HOT cars at all.

I'm sorry too.:o

Had to resist following the above 2 posts making a Hot car joke;

I've had issues with my old Juicy 7 brakes in a hot car, pritty much just started leaking like crazy out of the lever. Pritty much as said before, hydraulic brakes in a car isn't a good option! What you could maybe do if you do run hydraulic brakes, to avoid risk, take them off and put them in a cooler part of the car? Or take something along to store them in; Just saves whiping fluid off your car/rotors/bike then re-bleeding your brakes if it does happen.

Other than brakes, i've had no problems.

brake hoses + heat = bad idea! the become all flexy and soft, happened with my juicys and hayes 9's, try park your car in the shade

Wow, I never expected such an issue with brakes. I've got Hayes Mags and Saints on my bikes and haven't ever had an issue.

Can I ask, what colour cars are your bikes in? Mine's white... maybe it just doesn't get as hot or maybe I've just been lucky.

dark blue. I reckon being in the shade, or cracking a window would be enough to stop the heat build up

I had a tyre on my bike explode in the boot, the rim hit the backshelf and broke some plastic shrouding, but no damage to the bike thankfully. Tore the bead on the tyre. Made a colossal bang.

Funny thing was.... it was a Maxxis Detonator.

:D

Wow thanks for all the feedback guys! :)
9 times outa 10 I've got my old hardtail with cable disc brakes so should be no problems there - also car is white w/ tint windows so even better.

From all the reports with juicys I might have to hold off on upgrading the old beast.

But anyone had or heard any issues with Shimano hydros in hot cars?
