hey there i did try looking for this on the search but it was to no avail. i just got a new (second hand) set of boxxers for my new (second hand) norco manik frame, the problem is that the steerer tube is dead on 20 mm too short, 30mm out of head set on a 50 mm stem. the bolt for the headset top cap wont reach.

there are a couple of options i am presented with;

1. get a longer headset top cap bolt

2. get a new steerer tube.

3. what i did on my last frame, and angle grind the frame down by 20mm, which was a pretty rough method. i should be able to take 5-10 mm out of each end of the frame steerer tube.

any opinions as to what i should do would be appreciated

cheers,
landon

 Good god, save us all.

As leitch said get a Direct mount stem. Also try a headset with a low/zero stack height.

Please tell me this is a joke. I'm pretty sure it is. Longer bolts should be fine. 20-30mm is enough hangin out for your stem. Bolts should cost $0.41 from your local bolt shop.

Just send the steerer to Grip, great job and I think you'll be surprised with the cost.

alright you guys are gonna think i am a dickhead,

but yeah i did cut down a frame. long story short. im not the richest of fellows, and i have a kona cinder cone, which came to me cheap new, i was about to embark on a 5 day ride (tassie trail) when a mate of mine sold me a set of awesome drop off 4's. the kona came with a set of extremely S#$% marzocchi mz3, the drop off's sterer tube was too short.

So rather than hate myself on all the fast downhill sections of the trail with a pair of un dampened springs, i took to the frame. using an angle grinder

was pretty flukey that i pulled it off, and since then i have loved the cinder cone, wicked all mountain rig for sub 1000 dollars

only problem is that it chipped the dodgy kona paint.

ill put up a pic i just took. dont bag the horn.

  HELP US ALL!!! That is one of the dumbest ideas i have ever heard of!!! You should of just sent in to grip and get them to extend it for you!! Save hacking away at a bloody frame. Good luck when it comes the time when you want to sell it.

dont send it to grip for the extention it would be cheaper looking around for the lower crown or just get a direct mount stem or a smaller height stem like an atomlab one or an azonic aggro

Oh yes they are and yes it's pretty fun watching him axe it while in the rat traps. Thankfully his manik has flats which should save on the medical bill.

It's fine to hack into your head tube as long as you face it in the end. Manik head tubes are just machined straight through anyway, so you don't have to worry about your headset cup depth.

if the bolt on top cap wont reach the lock ring then push the lock ring rite the way through and re-insert it
