I think it was good he got the award but in his speech it seemed like he didnt really want to be recognised as Australian of the Year just because of his cricketing career, rather the work he has done in other countries. But anyway good on him he deserves it.

All biased aside, what the fuck has he done to deserve it?

Nothing compared to others (Steve Irwin).

Heaps of people do charity work and are more out there to try and get things done than Steve Waugh.
Such as Ben (unsure of last name) from Big Brother 1. He has done heaps for World Vision and gets it noticed, but to be honest, I didn't even know Steve Waugh did any charity.

Just out of curiotisy, what has Steve Irwin done?
I've heard he's been out there fighting for animal rights and that deal, but has he actually achieved anything from it?

I reckon he could become Australian of the Year in the future and stops pulling stupid stunts, like recent events.

Irwin can't be Australian of the Year, it'd clash with his nomination for Father of the Year.
<bad joke>
Irwin is working for wilderness and wildlife conservation, http://www.crocodilehunter.com/conservation/conservation/index.html

Anyway, I'm sure there are heaps of individuals out there who aren't under the celebrity spotlight that are doing fantastic work, whilst making an award for the more well known people is all great and gives us "heroes", it almost takes something away from all the people that do so much work that goes unrecognised.

The stuff on the site is literally a drop in the ocean of what he does...

steve waugh's a great guy and all but...
I think the lady who developed spray on skin and helped with the treatment of heaps of bali victims should have gotten the award. Her name escapes me right now but i think she should have goten it.

I agree shes from over here and I to cant remember her name buts she got like 6 kids hahaha that itself deserves an award.

Steve was the 4th SPORTSperson in 7 years to win the award.

I heard on the radio the other day Australia places to much emphasis on their sporting personalities and should be giving greater acknowledgements to our talented Artists and Thespians alike.

steve waugh has set up many shelters in india for the needy ones...

steve irwan has really helped promote australia to overseas countries... but that baby crap has blown him off the list IMO

it always has to be a celeb doesnt it?

there are MORE people that should be recognised...

The whole award thing is a complete farce... I know people who spend many hours a day doing charity work in their own locality. Making $bazillions per year, then donating 2% of it to a "good cause", doesn't make you any better than someone who puts in a lot of actual time and effort to help others. I'm sure Waugh has done a number of good things and all, but the whole idea that the award has to go to someone famous shits me.

steve waugh played cricket , so what .
there are thousands of aussie's who do stuff everyday for charities and help needy aussie's ,out of the kindness of their hearts .
or the lady with the spray on skin , steve irwin's huge conservation efforts ,or some one know body has ever heard of would be nice , not some one famous .

This is the point of view that most of the population have, and it's wrong. Tugger has spent heaps of time and money at a place called Udayan in India. It's a home for about 300 kids that come from Leprosy ridden slums in India. Bear in mind that cricket isn't a highly paid sport like tennis or golf.....the bloke isn't rolling in millions of dollars.

This isn't taking away from what Steve Irwin does though, he has purchased huge areas of land that were probably earmarked to be logged or built upon but are instead wildlife sanctuaries thanks to him.

And yes, there are stacks of Aussies that are just as deserving of the award.

.

i agree he may do some charity work in india ,so do thousands of others , and what has his money or lack of got to do with anything ?(he has done allright out of cricket financialy)
i just think other people have done more for this country and the australian people than he has .

Who cares how much time/effort spent on charity etc - the value of such work is really dependant on the attitude in which it was undertaken. Ie, if they did the charity and donated money etc so that they could look good and prestigeous and stuff and say to the media "hey look at me look at me - i saved a quabillion africans" then there is no value at all and it doesnt deserve to be recognised - however if they had right heart motive then thats cool - only problem is that you cannot tell the motive behind people actions - they are the only ones who know the true meaning because "words are cheap".

... personally i think fuzzy should get Aussie of the year because of his contributions to Farkin!!!

.... and im happy with any result just as long as it isnt guy sebastian!!!

hahah yeah - things could be worse. yeah, i have heard he has done great things for people in other countries, but he's not the only one! It does seem a bit weird that so many sportspersons get australian of the year.

i dont know about these awards - i totally believe that the nobel peace prize is a crock of sh*te - Ghandi didnt get it and Nelson Mandela did (acknowledged leader of the armed forces of the ANC)

Are you saying Mandela didn't deserve Nobel Peace Prize?

I personally don't think "the Crocodile Hunter" should have been in contention, But Steve waugh is OK. I don't think the award carries all that much weight. The winner has to be instantly recognisable, approved by the public, not too controversial, a role model for youth etc. There probably a lot more people deserving of such a mantle, but steve waugh fits like a glove to desired criteria, most imprortant of which is 'general public approval & instant recognition'

well im the general public, and steve waugh is deserving of this award as far as im concerned. there are people out there that have achieved so much more. for example, the lady that developed spray on skin. i dont see steve waugh making a breakthrough such as this, all i see him doing is hitting a small red ball with a lump of wood and running backwards and forwards over and over again. by this point u may have gathered that i dont like cricket. he may have helped leprosy children in india but that can be tainted if he did it for other purposes than to help people.

also, if 4 sportsmen/women have won the award in 7 years maybe they should have a sportsperson of the year award. but even then the winner is most likely to be from a mainstream sport anyway such as swimming, athletics and CRICKET etc. so it wouldnt matter.

Australia is such a sport obsessed country. It makes me sick!!

He may be a nice guy but hitting a little ball around doesn't make you aussie of the year. I was really pissed off when i found out.
