I can't believe the size of this bad boy.
The link below has more pictures and info.

Also another link to another site with info on this engine. (Thank you Dazz, post #24)

Yeah, they are impressive.
Before my old man retired, he was a naval officer (1st mate) on tankers.
I went on many a tour through the engine rooms on bulk carriers.
You know they have to throw the engines in reverse about 12 nautical miles before their intended port? Thats how long it takes to stop a decent size tanker.

Photos always make things look smaller, Seeing one in real life would be realy impressive.

Pfft, some lamborghinis have V 12s. They'd beat that tanker from the lights any day.

lol, but a lambo revs to 9000rpm. this thing doesnt even do 100!
lambos are cool, but nothing says snap like an engine the size of a double storey house

I'd say a gallon to a mile. What do you think?
Damn impressive engine though!

Ahh drinks a bit more than that! Quote from the site:
the 14 cylinder engine for example with a displacement of 25,480 Litres ( 1.56 million cubic inches ) burns up 1,660 gallons of crude oil every hour,

fark thats huge, shame u cant put it in an evo9 or wrx :p :p that would be funny
What sort of torque does it make?..
well torque is HP x 5252/RPM
so at full song; 90000 x 5252 / 100 = 4726800 lb-ft
thats some stump pullin' power.

crazy
but on another note, anyone read down the page a bit and see the smallest working engine in the world? miniature rotary ftw.

That would need a flamethrower for each cylinder to ignite the fuel hahah! Fair size....

i think you'd probably find it desn't even have a sparkplug, probably some sort head heaing device (glow plug) and monster compression.

Hahahaha, sparkplugs on an engine like that would be funny as, imagine replacing the things :P. An engine that size would use glowplugs.

its a deisel, it uses compression to ignite. although i dont understand how it keeps compression when there those holes in the piston.
ahahaha, ladders into the sump.

it says the oil is allowed in through valves so i guess it would be some sort of one way valve set up - air/oil/combustion gasses cant pass back through the piston, thus you get your compression and your drive, and then once the pressure equalises or even reverses, the oil would be force up through the piston. pure speculation really but it would be something along those lines.

I would suggest the holes are sealed off channels and ports to distribute oil around the underside of the piston crown, into the ring lands and suchlike, which is fed from the piston rod. They are not drilled through to the compression side of the cylinder crown.
In effect the same concept as oil squirters cooling pistons and recprocating parts, as used in a Toyota 4AGZE, Saab turbo engines and similar.

2nd that. There are some pics of the pistons & piston rods on this site:
http://people.bath.ac.uk/ccsshb/12cyl/ note the diagram at the top of the page that'll give you an idea of how it works.

The holes drilled in the underside of the pistons are indeed oil squirters to keep the piston cool.
P.s. The 2JZ can NEVAH lose.

Idiot....an engine that is a DIESEL will use glow plugs, not one that is big. Do you know what glow plugs are, and how diesels work? Thought not....

oh i see now, i didnt realise we were looking at the bottom of the pistons.

Imagine the starter motor...
Its probaly got like a CAT 600hp truck motor for the starter motor.:D
I also wonder if it would loud. Combustion chambers that big would be like bombs, rather than pops. Very interesting thas for sure.

again only speculation, but bottom left? not as big as youd think. given the low running rpm though and the gear ratio its running itd make sense that that is the starter motor. all that said, if there were a person standing next to it, it'd probably turn out to be pretty damn big.
