not 100% sure on how it is "pinned" but i do know welded is stronger, and yes pinned rims come on most entry level bikes

Yep thats pretty much it. The welded version is much stronger than the pinned version

A pinned rim is where a pin (its like a screw nearly) is used to join the ends of the rim. So basically that is the only thing that is holding it together it is more prone to breakin at the "pin" because there is only 2 points holding the whole thing together (on most pinned rims)

Cheaper or entry level rims are mostly going to be pinned and are generally weaker then welded rims.

As said before, the only difference is at the joint and a welded joint is usually stronger. But some after market rims come with a pinned joint, a good example is the Sun Rim King Pin, which is a very good rim.

And yes, S-Types are the pinned version of MTXs.

If you look at a rim cross section you'll see many have round hollows, that's where pins fit in. Sleeves are flat sections of steel that slip between rectangular hollows to hold it all together. Sleeves I guess are better than pins but not as good as welds.
