View Full Version : Women's Specific Body Armour
How many chicks out there would buy women's specific body armour if it was available in Australia?
I'm currently waiting for some chix armour from the US. It cost me a mint to have it shipped over and I was complaining about this to my boyfriend. He had a chat with one of our local bike shop owners and he's considering importing it if there's enough demand.
I'd love to hear your feedback.

Ditto.
Though, I have bought my own armour (mens dainese) because I think I'm way too tall to wear chix armour. It fits really well (and even has what looks like boob contours in the chest plate! They're obviously not contoured that way for THAT reason, but it works for me!)
Then again, if there was a store that I could buy chix armour from, I might actually get to try it on rather than making a punt when buying online!!

yes I would consider buying it depending on the fit.
Is there a website that I can have a look at?
check-out some moto shops, the body armor is pretty simlar to mtb gear (if not the same in some models) and most shops carry a far larger range than the average mtb shop.

yes the moto stores are good... but the amour is different it's sometimes heavier than MTB armour as a motorbike is a lot heaver when it lands on you (trust me on thi one Im learning to motor cross). Chicks armour in NZ moto is all pink which is disgusting and I refuse to wear it

my local moto store has a good variety of chiks moto stuff, non of which I like or I find even suits my body shape, more for the ummm bigger busted chicks out there.
At my current size there isnt a huge need for anything specific as such, a size smaller would always be good, but even the womens stuff i have tried the sizes have not been accomdateing.
Probably just inbetween sizes:rolleyes: as always

The Dainese stuff fits me OK as is.... 661 sucks bigtime (not flexible enough for the curvy bits ;) )

I just bought some 661 armour and its ok as long as the breast plate is taken out. Otherwise it wants to stick straight out from my chest! Its ok without it in tho.
I actually asked around various shops for women's specific body armour and they all looked at me like I was an idiot for suggesting that there could be such a thing. I would definately be in the market for women's specific stuff once I am ready for some new armour (I've managed to axe myself enough that my armour is already looking pretty sad after 2 months!). Could be soon!
Pink is ok by me! :o
I just received my Rockgardn Lady Flak jacket from the states. It fits perfectly and is so comfortable. I'm very pleased with this women's specific armour, but I'm not too pleased about how much it cost to have it shipped over here.

Yes freight can be pricey from the US, but at least our AUD$ value is a lot stronger now, so goods from the States are a lot cheaper which can offset the shipping cost. It also makes it worthwhile for the gear you can't get easily in Australia, yet - I like Rockgardn gear & have a pair of their DH shorts (mens) They do the job & are comfy enough! I also wear the 661 Pressure Suit Pro, (after I went down to a size S) it fit me a lot better than the medium, but the chest plate does still stick out a little bit... Verdict: these suits are ok if you don't have large bOObs, LOL

Hi Nugs
I also have the Lady Flak Jacket.
I was wondering how you find it for length?.
I am 168cm tall and find that its a tad shorter in the body than I would like, other than that I have no complaints.

I know I should not be in this area(I swear I was checking out the new posts tap!;))
but is this the armour you are talking about?

as I am about 80% sure I have seen it in a local moto shop
To Exvitermini,
Yes, that is the Lady Flak Jacket. Whereabouts did you see it?
To SCF,
I find the length fine, but I'm also 152cm tall. I also don't mind the pink, most of the time I wear it under a jersey so it's really not a big deal. :) or maybe everyone would prefer this colour :o

It annoys me that manufacturers can't go beyond the damned colours of pastel pink, light purple or powder blue for girls specific gear!!!!!! I'd be spray painting that flak jacket all black - even if it did fit me perfectly and was worn under a jersey I would still know it was PINK and annoying me, causing me to lose concentration and making me fall off my bike LOL!!! :p:o:(;):cool::eek: (whoever made these smileys are also on my colour ban list....... :D - except that one, oh and this one :) I like yellow)
 silly ranting episode over
Fair Enough . Actually, you'd think the least they could do is offer it in black. They don't even give you the choice.

Yeah that's my gripe, LOL not much choice, oh well. Maybe one day when the demand for womens gear increases we'll see some variety :)

I hope to goodness that you never have a major 'off' and wish that you were an armor wearer Roxy!!!! Having said that though, I've only worn my pressure suit for the Bluff track here (which didn't save my torn shoulder ligaments) and also on my motorbike. If I try something like more dangerous jumps I'll put the full kit on but on tracks I'm familiar with its just knee/shins, gloves, helmet, goggles....and I leave my padded bum pants at home these days, LOL
The Alpine Stars suit does look like a good womens fit in the waist & hips, but yeah those are some huge shoulder pads.... but darker colour purple & more black is far more acceptable :p

Im so with you there... pink no way..... NiK would be with us there too
oh and wear my armour heaps and so glad the tracks here can be mental and rock as so hurts heaps if ya come off... my armour the shoulder got all scratched recently in a crashed so glad I was wearing it though... I do howvwr now need a new race shirt :(
so note to manufactures not all us chickes wear pink... in fact I find it highly offensive that all the womens gear is pink..... and dont think you can make me wear baby blue either cause it aint happening ppl....
ok Im finished ranting now (silly assignaments have put me in bad mood )

I agree! Also, a great feature in the Lady Flak jacket are the arms, they're detachable. It's also designed specifically for MTB so it isn't as bulky as the Motocross stuff.
We'll just have to get them to work on the colour for YakinAway

in most accidents cases these jackets do little but prevent abraisions they dont even prevent most spinal injuries when it comes t rideing as 90% are crushing or compression breaks, not direct impact, i wear a kidney belt because there a differnent story, a proper kidney belt, as the ones that are attached to these suits are utter crap and are more of a retaining system.
ive had several major offs, injuries would not have been prevented by wearing one of these either. However I do maintain that ive chrashed alot more then most chicks and do no how to stack with little after affect now.:p
But i do own one anyway, so if i ever do feel the need it is there.

yeah... I dont wear it on all the trails just ones with nasty rock gardens...
as said armour wont save broken bones or spinal injuries but it does save a lot of bruising and some skin...
my bike mechanic is once quoted saying that " body armour will not stop you breaking anything it is mearly a sack that keeps the bits together whilst they get you to the hospital" lol so true
although Im glad I was wearing mine when I did this (see photo) to my shirt def saved my shoulder but was still damn sore...
note to self you can not ride a line that close to the trees.....

Some valid points there Rox. I have a somewhat false sense of security when I wear my pressure suit, but I'll still wear it for (what I consider) 'potential risk riding' (if only for preventing deep flesh wounds) When it comes to the thought of spinal injuries though I think you're mostly screwed with or without armor. As you say if you have the skill to roll yourself out of a bad landing & come out on top that shows you are becoming a great rider! I've done somersaults over the bars & walked away knowing it was just luck, but one day I'll be not so lucky and I've found the slow stacks are worst (re: buggered shoulder after hmmm 9 months now) Note to self: hit jumps faster, avoid trees where possible, LOL

you know what they says great minds think a like.....
I have def learnt to roll now... hit trees 2 race weekends in a row and came away sore but not broken (unless you count a major headache) I really must learn not to push it and try get on lines too close to trees.....

also at slow speed you have less carry though. I find going faster I tend to clear stuff and get myself out of trouble more than when going slow. Sometimes I ride away think how did I hang on I am learning speed is the key

Hi there, my name is ting, and I'm looking to buy the same jacket as well. However, I'm quite confused about which size to buy and hope you could help me out.
I'm a size 34 D. However, the web site states that a 34-36 AND cup A to B+ is a small; while a size 36+ AND cup B+ to D is a medium.
Im' worried that if I order a small, it'll be too comfortable. Ideas?

Hi Ting,
If I were you, I'd email Rockgardn and ask them for their advice. No one knows the product like they do and they are really helpful. Otherwise, I'd go for the medium, they are adjustable all over and it is easier to make something smaller than bigger.
