craigh1,
even if you're not that fast at dh are duellys still a lot smoother?

Duellys will always be faster I reckon, tires remain in contact with the ground more, and suspension absorbs impacts, thus enabling one to roll over objects and basically keep their momentum.

Duely's in the right hands will always be faster, there are a few hardtails that can beat some of the duelys but it comes down to the riders in that case.
Duely's are easyer on the knees and easyer to ride, but in the end it comes down to personal preference

doing downhill on a hardtail is fine u just cant go as fast as the dualys down some tracks.
And when your on a hardtail watch out for rocks sticking out cause i hit a rock sticking out of the ground and went head over turkey down a 7 foot drop, which resulted in hospital for me.

Yeah Man...Dually For sure... in the last downhillmeet we had up here the fastest hard tail was about 20-30 seconds of the pace of the leading dually riders. Only because its too rough on a hardtail...

for a good comparison got and have look at the results from the Lithgow TT
down hill held two weeks ago
From that you may be able to decide which is best.
There were some riders on hard tails whose times were very competitive with the duallies
The choice is yours

Well really if you think of it this way, the only reason they invented rear suspension for bikes is to...
1) Keep the wheels on the ground more.
2) Create a more comfortable ride.
3) To ride over technical ground smoother.
And I am sure there are many more reasons, but these would be the most obvious, so if you think of it this way, a Dual Suspension is better in all ways, except for the weight factor, but if you ride your DH/FR Bike more I am sure you will just get used to the weight. If I was you when you get the money together buy a dually, but the Hard Tails are still a hell of a lot of fun. :D

Well you can get a Kona Stinky for around that price, or a Norco Shore 2 or 3. They all seem to be very well speced and are money well spent. But if you were to go second hand then as you have most likely seen, there are often some really good deals in the For Sale section of this forum, and you could end up with a Santa Cruz, just depends on whether you want new or second hand. But if you want new, the bikes I have suggested above are about the only decent ones for that price, and maybe one of the lower Giant Glories.
Tell us what you get. I am interested in purchasing a bike in the same price range. :D
