ok guys
i am a downhiller, and i absolutely(sp) love it, i just can't get enough of it. but when me and my mates are out riding around an they say "lets go to the skatepark" i just stand around watching them. its simple i'm just no good at it. I'm just so gumby when i comes to skateparks. so my question is, how can i get good at it, when i mean good i don't mean aaron chase good, i just mean good enough to ride the park without falling on my ass in the bowl. and maybe one day be able to do some tricks and stuff. yer so just post up any tips you've got to help me out, cause i'm sick of just watching, i want to be out there with everyone having fun.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Helps to just watch the lines other people take and just copy them to get a feel for the park. Learning to air a quarter helps too. start small as well and go bigger and stuff as you get more confident.

What bike do you ride? Just try flow everything for a start.

As i like dirt said above, watch other people's lines and just try those.

My biggest hint for learning would be get up early (like 6am early) with a mate, and head to the skatepark. At that time there will be no-one there, so you'll get the whole park to yourself, plus you won't be embarrased to fall or learn because there's no-one around to see it happen. Just start by rolling around a lot, gradually picking up speed and hitting small obstacles/ramps/etc. Eventually as your confidence grows you'll go bigger and bigger, and learn more and more about riding a skatepark.

That's what I used to do, as it is also empty, and you can try anything without people in the way.

Unless you're shit like ronald here..then you'll feel intimidated all the time. By your mum.

I still go early to parks and I can ride them ok. So much more room with no-one else there. go for occasional solo mission now and again nice and relaxing

Gotta love skate parks, just takes a lot of patience and commitment before you get any good. I've been riding them every now and again for a while and i'm still shithouse. Just be prepared to get shinned a lot. And falling on concrete farkin hurts!!!

It's a good idea to go early in the morning. Make a list of things you want to do before you get there. Make sure you pad up and just have fun. Who cares if you fall on your ass, everyone does it at some stage or another. Another thing you can do is hang around with bmxers. Most of the time when I go riding there's me on my mountain bike with a dozen bmxers. You can learn a lot of things from them. Yeah the biggest thing is just have fun.

Hehe there was a 40 something who i had a chat to before work (i.e. before 8am) at the city skate park this week. Had his little BMX and decked out to the max with protective gear. Doing it all so he could keep up with his 9 year old.

Respect, complete respect.
