hey everyone, i wanna spray my front rim blue but its black at the moment. its alloy, its a Hoffman generator 36h and i was just wondering what people recomend is the best system to do so.?
So?
how can i get the existing paint off?
what should i use to prime it with?
what paint do you think i should use?
and should i clear coat it when its done??
i was also thinking of painting my sprocket and using the same process
cheers, Andrew
so, you want blue rims ehhhhh?
sure youre not coping my blue bike:p .
well what i am going to do is just paint over the chrome, coz fuck getting that shit off. but if the rim's anodised, just paint over it. if its not, use spray on stripper and scrape it off. then i would definately clear coat it.
edit: read what rim is it and it should be just painted. if so, then use stripper. but you wouldnt really need to, as long as you paint it in thin layers of paint

you will need to sand it to bare metal, primer it with 2pac primer & paint with 2pac primer.
if you use acrylic primer with 2pac primer the paintwill flake off.
Have you considerd getting it powder coated? it would probably be better.

just spray paint over the existing paint and then put a clear coat over it. it will be fine.

I was thinking of doing this with my frame but if I scratch it you would be able to see the colour underneath. Also if melbourne rider was to do that would he have to sand it back even just a little bit? Or just straight paint on paint?

take it to an alu stripper , pay the dude 20 cash....then go across the road and get it professionally powdercoated for probibly 25 cash...you have outlayed at the most 50/60 bucks and it's done right the first time....
By the time you have arsed about cleaning it, stripping it ,sanding it, trying to paint it without runs, getting runs, re-sanding, doing over you would be better off in the long run to get a pro to do it and have an awsome finished product...

unfortunately not everyones local powdercoater is that cheap. i took a frame down and he quoted 110. so i diy'd it. as for a rim do what rhysrhysbaby said, just spray over it. as long as you're not braking on it it will be fine.

dulux spraypack metal primer (8 bucks) .. dulux spray pack (8 bucks) any colour you want ...
fuck clear coat its pointless unless you use a 2 pac, which will sound stupid, but will be heavy.
i just painted my frame, with kill rust paint, and a metal primer, striped it down to bare metal, seems pretty strong ive knocked it a few times installin BB, and headset with no flakin or chipping.
