What, Big Chief's at Rooty Hill?

Toolmaker/Engineering Student.

I've been doing by job for too long to say I like it anymore, hence the student bit. Still, it pays the bills.

My Job is a computer systems tester at Dept. of Immigration.
What i like about it.. not much, its really boring. But the people I work with are good, the hours are somewhat flexible, and pay is pretty good for someone without any qualification.

I am also a student at ANU studying Economics.

Im a research scientist working for Defence.

Good job, good hours, interesting work.
Downsides are having to deal with students and some academics, and my office is 2 floors underground.

All up though, pretty damn tops.

I am a researcher for ABC News/Lateline/ Midday Report & other news & current affairs programs. I worked on the story that won Lateline a Logie, so I am now a logie award winning researcher ;)

I really enjoy my work. Every day is different & I am constantly learning about subjects I would never have looked up on my own time. Downside is shift work but penalties help make that bearable.

Mining Engineer

What I like about it:

1. 37.5 hour week.
2. Air conditioned office.
3. City location.
4. Interesting work, mostly international stuff.
5. Everybody here is an expert in their field, nearly 100% of the mining engineers here hold PhDs.
6. Good opportunity to learn and to build the foundations for opening my own mining consultancy later on.
5. Money :)

What I dislike about it:

1. Liability
2 .Can get ultra intensive with calculations, but thats why they pay the big bucks.

site/production manager for an exhibition company
whats great:
* get paid to travel around australia and some over seas work.
* everyday is different, working on different things, motor shows, wallaby games, beauty shows (mmmm...... eye candy) and the like.
* being taken out by clients on their company credit card

what sucks:
* stupid hours, my biggest week was 106 hours, but average 60ish
* having to be nice to jerk off clients
* being away from home so often (about 18 weeks a year)

Just changed career. After over 10 years in the oil industry doing NDT and Rope Access (well, 6 years on the ropes also including a bit of civils work) I've jacked it all in to become a commercial diver. Halfway through the air diver course, then it's off to work. First stop I think may be back to Angola as I'll probably be working for my step-father. Looking forward to it!

whats your job.

I am a Project Co-ordinator for a large fit out / construction company. I
Co-ordinate and Manage high volume fitout projects for a varriety of clients. In this I aid in the development of project schedules, develop construction schedules. Prepare skope of works, Price projects up for tender... So on and so forth. In a nutshell my position bridges the gap between the Senior Project Manager and the actual construction.

I am also currently studying. :)

What do you like about it?

I love my job - it's reasonably flexable, it's fast and it's furious pays well too. I love working in the construction industry, and this is just one step in my goal of becoming a Senior Project Manager. :)

What do you dislike about it?

The travel, not so much the travel involved with working - but the too and from work commuting makes life tough sometimes.

Pros:
Great pay
Very flexible hours
Can work from anywhere I like (no commuting to an office)
Interesting and fun job
Don't have to wear a suit

Cons:
Clients who can't make up their mind

dislike:english, annoying people

ski mechanic- basicallly tuning ski's, serving customers, fitting skis & boots etc
likes: free ski hire, fun people, good pay ($15/hr and i'm 17), discount ski gear, it's based off-mountain so its close to home

dislikes: early starts - 7am in winter bbbrrrrrrrr cold , wankers who think they know everything there is to know about skiing, painful customers, stingy customers, the work is seasonal so i have to find another job in summer, i work on weekends when i could be riding or skiing( but i do get atleast one day out of 2 if i let the boss know in advance or if its not busy.

workshop stuff at LBS
likes: my mate's folks own the shop so i get to hang out with him at work & we often work together which is fun, i like working on bikes, decent pay $12/hr, they are really nice people and kind of sponser me for riding(good deals on bikes etc).

dislikes: inconsistant hours, i only really work there occasionally, its always cold in there.

Farm work - blackberry spraying and building fences
likes: a bit of manual labour never hurts, good pay $15/hr (and when i need it), same boss from ski hire (nice bloke), get to drive around lots + a bit of 4wding, atleast 10 hrs per day so the hrs stack up nice and quickly (me and a mate earned close to a grand in 5 days), we get to borrow the boss's rifle to go rabbit hunting if we want to (theres tonnes of bunnies out there), we get fed too (includes beer :D )

dislikes: the heat in summer, food is good but every night its meat, a lot of responsibility (things can go seriously wrong real quick on some tasks eg machinery), its pretty hard work your absolutely f%cked after a solid 2 weeks of work, we don't always go back to the house for lunch.

I'm doing a traineeship in Accountanting at KPMG

What I like about it?
Good study leave and study allowances.

Working there helps a lot with uni work, and I can ask 80 other people the answers to questions or get help quite easily.

Great workplace, with great people.

Lots of opportunities after uni. Go overseas, etc.

What I don't like about it?
Being stuck inside an office the whole day, which has a very fake environment and atmosphere, always a constant 25 degrees or whatever.

Getting the crap jobs where people bring in a years worth of invoices, receipts and all that stuff in a massive box, for me to sort through and enter.

My terribly slow work computer that is just frustrating after using a MacBook Pro over the weekend and at uni. My work computer takes about 10 minutes to start up, I have to bill time to my computer starting up, that's how bad it is.

Got the job before i started riding, been working there about 3 years now.

Likes
I love it cos it's laid back, fairly reasonable pay for my age, flexible hours, amazing boses, and i'm surrounded by toys all day.
I also coach rollerblading and skateboarding for a couple of hours a week, and many hours in the holidays, at $30 an hour.
Comparative to my fellow year 12's who are earning $11.50 at Maccas/Burger King/Brothel, i'm not complaining.

Dislikes
My bosses are such awesome people it's often hard to turn down a day of work. Another thing i dislike is that i'm having to stop working as often due to school. .

Well, i am a qualified butcher by trade, but the meat industry sucks big time. I left butchering as soon as i finshed my apprenticeship and work at Holdens on afternoon shift as a Workgroup Leader. Also studying front line management part-time at TAFE.

Likes:

I'm a workgroup leader, so i get to tell people what to do :P
The people, very social, layed back group we are.
The hours, have the whole morning to myself (has its downsides though)
The pay (65k+ a year to do nearly nothing, and i didnt need to study)

Dislikes:
The idiots on Dayshift, because they work Dayshift, they seem to think they own the place
Having to wear "lilac" coloured overalls and stupid heavy radio
The fact that the car industry is dying in australia, and i fear i may have to get a real job soon.
Like i said above - the hours, im at work while most people are at home.

Software and electrical design engineer. Bloody great fun, loads of international travel. I'm in Malaysia now (near KL) for the next 5 weeks then onwards to Shanghai in China for another 5, then Iran and Chile later in the year. I like the adventure, although I am now a specialist in all kinds of pidgin English. It can be pretty stressful work with long and unpredictable hours, but when I'm in Sydney doing office work I find I miss the atmosphere. Anyway, I'm currently slacking so back to the salt mines!

I'd post some happy snaps, but me choking an local electrician after he's bungled the same circuit three times despite patient instruction might get me in trouble ;)

Web/Graphic Designer

I run my own (very small) web design and graphic design business (www.getpixel.com.au (http://www.getpixel.com.au) - for those interested).

I like it because:
- I can browse Farkin when I want
- Flexy Hours
- I am in the drivers seat
- I have a awesome office setup/environment
- Every project is different
- I get to be creative
- I can use contractors instead of employees
- I can live through the business in some regards, i.e mobile, car...
- The industry is ever-changing

I dislike it because:
- Like someone said, I have to bend over to ensure clients remain happy
- I have to do all the other stuff that comes with running a business, from accounting to cleaning
- Carparking is a fair way from the office
- Long hours and tight deadlines
- Some clients don't tend to want to pay on time
- Software is expensive!
- Bills are almost a daily occurance
- I don't pay myself super yet
- Clients don't understand the amount of design/development time required to produce a quality project
- The google whinge
- The indsutry is every-changing

I once upon a time worked for RawNRG in Thredbo, allowing me to ride the Thredbo mountain all day everyday whilst getting paid for it. Unfortunately all good things have to come to an end, however it will remain the best job I will ever have in my lifetime.

driving out in the bush seeing sheds i helped build.
foreign orders.
its a trade job, so easy to get another job.
i did my apprenticeship at garden island on navy ships, subs, ferrys etc.

whats crap-
getting burnt, cut, hit and other injuries.
pay (it is a trade).

and my part time job... i escort the escorts :D
whats good about it-
the money is awesome, basically paid to walk around, grab something to eat while i wait
having my perception of working girls totally changed

whats bad about it-
not gauranteed money every week.
being on-call.
im no prude, but details i get told i could do without knowing!

Baker at Baker's Delight

Good stuff-
steady work.
free bread stuffs.
that hot fresh bread smell.
going home when others are getting up.
getting to ride in the morning after working.
good team atmosphere.
people saying they got up early today, then asking what time I started.
job satisfaction, 'that's some nice product'.
and having a trade under your belt.

Bad stuff-
dodgey weekly roster system.
being short staffed most of the time.
1st yr apprentices that can't hack the work pace.
trying to sleep in 8hr blocks doesn't work any more.
no weekends off for me.
getting a wake up call at 3am when someone does a '404' [a no show] on your day off.
getting a face full of steam when you open an oven.
breathing in flour dust.
extensive cleaning every day.
oh and going to work the same day that you finished work is hard to get your head around sometimes.

It's a great job, keeps me fit and there's not much to it. You have to work fast and sleep is better than sex.

... sometimes.

I'm the owner/manager of a small supermarket. I'm still in the start up stage (we open in 2 weeks)

Likes.
Being my own boss
Investing my time into my own future
Cheap groceries

Dislikes.
Long hours
Pushy suppliers
Book keeping

i'm sure there will be more as time goes on.

It's a interesting change as I've always worked in technical service/consulting industries where I worked under alot of pressure for short periods of time, often with odd hours, then had maybe a few days where it was slow, and I was busting my arse to line someone else's pockets. now it's steady fixed hours (kind of), in a business that I actually own. i'll probally get bored in a year or so but we'll see what happens.

That would have to be the coolest job on the list to date!

Me - Construction Manager for a large commercial construction company.

Pros:
Being able to walk away from a project at the end of the day and say "I built that!" Its pretty awesome playing a large part in the construction of buildings & infrastructure that will (hopefully) be there and enjoyed for years to come.

Cons:
The stress....it can be huge at times!

What: principal at a primary school.

Likes: kids, they're awesome! (Until such time as they enter the teens, from which point they suck. Yes, all of them). Their honesty, innocence, enthusiasm, the fact that they aren't yet cynical and jaded, all good. Seeing kids improve, not just academically but as human beings. Watching the smile on the face of a kid who's a struggler and finally nails something he or she has been battling to master or comprehend. Knowing I can make a positive diference to a child's life. Oh, holidays....

Dislikes: unpleasant conversations with parents and teachers, the occasions when I've had to go to funerals of children or their parents (kids shouldn't have to bury mum or dad), dealing with DOCS, people who don't look after their kids, parents in denial, responsibility, the fact that many of my peers and colleagues are utter twats.

bike shop mechanic at toys 'r' us -

pay sucks, stupid people who come in here suck (is this a GOOD 12inch girls bike?...arrgghhh!), ocasionaly i get to make up or repair a bike of reasonable quality.
get to cunningly 'borrow' misalanious items such as a new derailer wheel that i broke last weekend.

Unemployed.

Five years running and still going strong.

I love my life.

I haven't worked for nearly 3 years and I'm going mad!!!!

Job: Dilapidation Surveyor

Likes: Out in the field for a lot of the time on building sites. I am usually the first person on the site and surrounds so its good to see a project from go to whoa.

Dislikes: Clients who don't pay their accounts. Difficult people on sites to deal with, but they are everywhere, and dodgy areas in which I have to work. At one site in the space of 4 days I had 1 gang murder, one attack right in front of my eyes of a person walking along the footpath, and one unexplained death (the body was found on the site in the early morning). Insurance costs which, basically, forced me to retire. BASTARDS!!

Other than that I love the work.

As depressing as this to publicly announce my job... Im a produce manager with woolworths.

Likes...not any that i can think of. The money is reasonable, but it stops there.

Dislikes... where do I start?

4.30-5am starts
12 hours days
Work every weekend
Unrealistic budgets
Missing my unachievable gross profit targets and getting reamed for it.
Relying on people who dont give a fuck about their job.
Not enough ride time.
Cant go to saturday practice on race weekends.
No social life
Constant fatigue
High stress

Planning on studying next year.:)

Previously:
-Pub work (glassy, barman, cellarman, manager)
-Security
-Building labourer

Got sick to death of the hospitality industry and decided to go to Uni. Somehow ended up doing Medicine...

Now: Doctor (Intensive Care / Anaesthetics)

Like:
-Interesting work
-Satisfying
-Work with some great people
-Shift work allows riding time
-Fly on rescue helicopter

Dislike:
-Work can vary between boring and incredibly stressful
-Trying your absolute best to save someone and they die anyway (especially kids)
-Shift work and hours (try 8x 12 hour days/nights in a row)
-Exams (study for a year, cost $2500+, 50% pass rate)
-Work load can be horrendous- way worse than any other job I've ever had. -Internship is hell.
-Work with some absolute tossers

Even though there are more dislikes than likes on the list I love it and feel very priviledged to be doing something I enjoy so much.

As depressing as this to publicly announce my job...

I kind of feel the same but seeing as everyone else is doing it, i'll jump in too.
I'm a rampworker at Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport.
This basically means that i receive planes, unload and load them and then despatch them. It is actually an alright job when the weather is nice, i love being outside in the fresh (kerosene tinged) air. Plus i never get sick of watching planes take off and land, especially when they aren't just the regular run of the mill aircraft.
Watching an Antonov An-124 do both is truly an amazing sight, that plane is absolutely massive and when fully laden, you get the impression that it will never get off the ground. Even then when it does, it rises so slowly that it seemingly takes forever to get to a decent altitude.
However when the weather is bad, which is quite often up here, working outside can be a right royal pain in the arse. We get everything from rain, sleet, hail, snow and ice, as well as combinations of them all. My employer has been really slack in supplying us with wet weather gear so sometimes you can do nothing but get soaked. Working in a northern European winter is truly an experience you won't forget!
Another thing i don't like is the size of some cargo holds, there are a few makes and models where you barely have room to even crouch on all fours. In a Fokker 100 you only have enough room to lie down on your side comfortably, and even then it is extremely difficult to pack the hold properly. Injuries are an everyday thing for us and i reckon i hit my head at least five times a day during a long shift. The other day i had a 200kg cargo crate land on my thigh as we were (unsuccessfully) trying to reposition it.
The hours are also not so good, 13 hours in the cold can be hard to deal with, especially once your feet have gotten cold during the first few hours. Also we are quite undermanned and underequipped so we are usually far busier than we should be. On many occasions we have shifts where our first break comes after working for 7 hours straight. Those kinds of days were quite common throughout winter due to so many workers being sick each and every day.
I have learned quite alot during my 2+ years at the airport and i feel quite confident in saying that i am good at my job. Plus, i am one of few that will do my best not to throw around your luggage too much, especially bikes and surfboards!! :D

Edit: here are some crappy phone cam pics that i have taken. The first is an Antonov An-124, the second is a Lufthansa Airbus A320, the third is an Air Baltic Fokker 50 and the last is a bit of witches hat trickery! :p

What:
just finished AD in civil/environmental engineering

Also self employed as a handy man.
90% of my work is actually repairing/altering previous building/landscaping works so they actually comply with aust standards and work the way they were supposed to. In short i fix dodgey/dilapidated works.
The other 10% is doing new works.

Likes:
Being my own boss
Setting my own hours
Variety of work

Dislikes:

Dealing with unrealistic expectations from home owners, i.e champagne tastes on a beer budget.

Having to tell the home ownwer they have to spend x amount of $ to fix something that they already paid someone else to do.

Having to fix basic things which were done out of sheer lazyness and corner cutting. You laugh the first couple of times and then start to shake your head after a while.

Not the most exciting, but I work at the Hut of Pizza

Likes: Its an easy and slack job, I don't have to do much or get stressed and its nice easy work.
The boss and other employees are all pretty good, I have no enemies or people at work that I hate.
Lots and I mean LOTS of free food. At least one pizza every time I work and I enjoy making my own Pizza.
Local and I get to ride my bike there:)

Dislikes: I guess money, could do with it being more. Theres a few customers I dislike and theres always someone who will complain or sook at me, I usually ignore them and don't listen.
Making dough is repetitive, however I can listen to whatever music I like.
Peak, it does get busy sometimes.
I guess its a bit boring but oh well, Im not complaining.

I'm still studying Adventure Eco-Tourism. Its a 3 year degree at Charles Sturt. Best designed Uni Course ever. Part TAFE, Part Uni. Basically, you come out with a bachelors and a cert. 4. I also do contract work with schools sometimes. And work casually at Kathmandu (outdoor gear shop).

Perks- Learn heaps of cool stuff with TAFE. Rock climbing, Wilderness first aid, Light Ridged Bus licence, Bushwalk guiding, even MTB guiding. Really interesting Uni classes. Heaps of spare time to go riding. Getting to help people do something for the first time. The look on peoples faces after they have abseiled for the first time. Talking to interesting customers at Kathmandu. Party life! At the Pimps and Hoes night on friday, there was $2 shots and $2.50 beers all night. And three resulting nudie runs.

Lows- TAFE stuff is expensive when you don't have a healthcare card. Always tempted into buying stuff at Kathmandu (with a staff discount...). Not many others. Hiking in hot dry weather, filtering water out of a dodgy looking pond.

I've got 2 'real' jobs, plus being chief banning stick swinger on here.

PE Teacher / ICT (computers and technology stuff) Coordinator at a state primary school

Like
- PE teaching is sweet, outdoors half the day teaching kids sport
- Making a positive difference in kids life is rewarding
- Helping a 'mature' staff upgrade their technology skills is also rewarding
- Hours can be good, some weeks I'll get to ride everyday
- Salary is good for a graduate / early career
- 10 weeks holiday a year
- Highly portable qualification; will be travelling with it for the next 3-4 years
- Government job, so have leave that covers the next 4 years and a guaranteed job on return

Dislike
- ICT Coordinating is a huge, stressful job
- PE teaching is considerably more involved and time-consuming than I imagined it would be
- Colleagues who resent me for having an 'off class' component to my job after 3 years out
- General 'office politics'
- Hours can be extraordinarily crap, I can do back to back 50 hour weeks and still only get paid for 50 hours a fortnight
- Government job, so could be transferred to Doomadgee, Alpha or any one of hundreds of middle-of-nowhere locations with 6 weeks warning

Other job is freelancing for Revolution magazine

Likes
- Involved with what is, in my opinion, the best mag in the country
- Get to come up with and write whatever the hell I like
- Nationwide forum to abuse idiots / big-up people who deserve it
- Pays, pays well, pays on time

Dislikes
- Arguing with editor about spell checking / proof reading
- Only 4 issues a year, wish there were more

Also, dr. matt is a pimp. A real life, honest to god pimp. He has the best job out of all of us. In my mind, he also has a purple velvet suit, a cane, a fedora with a feather in it, a gold tooth and a pimp limp. Don't spoil my dream by correcting me dr. matt.
