Thinking about heading to NZ in July to try skiing for the first time - I've tried boarding, but I sucked (not that Thredbo's ice helped), so might try some planks instead. Thinking of staying in Wanaka for Cadrona and Treble Cone.

The GF has skiied a bit, so I'll be falling over at the bottom of the hill while she's off having fun.

I'm going to be in Queenstown for 7 days in july, 5 days snowboarding, choice of the closest 4 resorts, 1 full day of bungee/jetboat/drink/touristing, It's gonna rock!

Yeh I did the same as you Alpinestar last year. Was really really good. Coronet Peak is probably the best out of all the slopes close to Queenstown although The Remarkables is good if you ignore the pain from the most uncomfortable lift chairs ever.

Me and my family are going to NZ, Queenstown from the 12th - 19th July. I know its only short but we are getting a 3 day ski pass at coronet peak i think, although i'll be going snowboarding:cool:. Also it's good that my b'day is on the 14th July, YAY:D. It shall be fun, can't wait.

Yeah, Ill be up there 3rd till the 10th like i do every year.

You cant take it on the ski slopes but you can take it to the toboggan run or just find a random spot outside you lodge and set up some ramps.

Oh and this year if there is good enough snow (unlike last season) im going pull a back flip on ski's. Also im going drop off the roof (3 stories high) into the snow, last year i jumped 2 stories high there just wasn't enough snow piled up to get on the roof.

just ridin a POS burton canyon, p1 carbon bindings, and DC judge boots.. really want a new board binding combo, few sales on atm so might have to have a look.

I was fairly keen for NZ, just cbf getting all ready in less then a month, i hate travelin with out any plans, especialy when you are dragging around 15-10kg of ski gear.

yes baw baw is in vic, think its oursmallest lifted field... generaly has shit snow, but word is that they have upgraded the snowmakin equipment to get a park running even if there is no snow like last season.. i cant see it happening through.

Anywhoo, not sure where Im going this year, hopefully Perisher, will prolly stay down at Jindy. If my little sis pulls her finger out she may just have a job up at either Mt Hotham or Jindy, so accom should be all sweet. If thats the case Ill be up for 3 weeks.

Cant wait, lets hope we get some serious dumpage this year, all prey to the snow gods!

Going with school (well...aslong as I behave) at the start of third term. I have never been before and I chose snow boarding as I can skate (board) fairly well.

Would it be possible to use my Oakley MX O frame goggles (woth clear lenses) for snowboarding or will I have to buy new lenses?

Cheers, Sam:cool:

You'll love it, its heaps better than skating, just remember your not on trucks, you gotta carve like your surfing, oh and snow is just as hard as concrete when your at speed lol

Nuh dont bother taking your MX ones, they are single lens only, meaning they will fog up in the snow. Just buy some good snow goggles they'll last ya ages. Also buy yourself some good polorised sunglasses, (or some cheap dark ones) the glare off the snow on a sunny day is painful (well it is for me I wore sunglasses under my goggles on a few days last year)

We'll get along fine cause I don't crash on the groomed runs and you won't be catching me so you can do your ten foot wide broadside turns like one of those old school fire engines with the rear driver asleep on a wet road. Just make sure you crash facing up hill so when I boost off your sorry arse your boards edges won't damage my skis,PUNK.

Maybe not so much jealous DHTF but just keen to get my jig on and carve up. :D

And to ber perfectly honest with you Rod, Im pretty new to this whole thing ( 2 seasons only) its pretty hard to be "into" boarding when you live in the west. But I was fucking shocked at the sheer lack of respect shown by both sides towards each other on the mountain. Especially those who crash into you and dont even bother to apologise. My lil sister had to punch some guy in the face last year because he crashed into her then tried skiing off without even acknowledging her, she grabbed his pole and socked him one.

Personally I couldnt care less how you ride, and I should probably stop contributing to the already over the top aggro before I even get to the slopes. I choose a board because I skate and quite frankly feel unco with my feet side by side (ie water skiing, snow skiiing, riding a scooter ect) So I'll take back my little lame joke and simply say.....

Hope you all have a cracking time this year!!! \m/ \m/

donthucktoflat
17-05-2007, 10:18 AM
i believe you mean jib :D

and in regards to my comment which was aimed at your comment, also a joke.

i have nothing against skiiers. i ride with skiiers all the time. i DO, however, have something against cockheads who are serious about the whole skiier v. boarder thing. we're all there to have fun so get off your high horse and get over it i say.

i ride with people who joke about it and it's all in good fun when ya joking :D

unfortunately it just seems that the number of (incompetent) boarders has tripled over the last few years and it pisses people off (especially jap tourists:mad: :p )

Dont know when I'm heading up yet but hopefully we get some snow soon or i wont get up at all :P. I just got back from 6 months at snowbird/Utah instrucitng there so any aussie snow isnt going to be quite as fun but hey. I've got a new forum destroyer/forum v1.8 bindings and destroyer boots to try out, AND a new set of K2 Fujative skis. It's going to be fun no matter what!

Bring on the snow!!!!

At least boarders arent so much of a hazard coz they fall over before they pick up any kind of speed, its so much easier for a skiier to straightline down anything and not stop until they hit something compared to a boarder.

Thats the problem, the boarders fall just in frount of you. It really annoying (especially on the flatish trails).

Will be heading up to persiher from the 23th to the 29th of June (just before peak). We could also go from the 1st to the 7th of July, but will be an extra $150. My question is, is it worth going later in search for more/better snow, or is it simply a waste of $150? Also has anyone been up previous during late June, if so whats the snow generally like at this time?

If you guys get any proper powder, you should noboard.
No holding the rope, though... Only surf-style.
Most resorts here are closed (Sunshine closes today and they always shut last) with some still registering over 5m of base.
Still snowmobiling, however, as the shred is on in most alpine zones... You just have to be careful of peeling slopes, this time of year.
The skier-rider venom is funny... here in N/A, It tends to be the refuge of the lame. Abusing the "other side" is usually present when the abusers skills are weak. You can tell when you're talking to someone who's been at it for awhile, when they don't make anti-ski-ride comments... They're past it.

Yes, I am freaking jealous that I'm not there :(. You must be devastated that the snow season is finished up. Now you'll be stuck with a few months of riding some of the best mtb trails in the world... tough life :p.

about as good as aussie snow has been lately.

Haha yeah, quess its just one of those things really, really predict what's going to happen. Finger crossed this year will be better than last... not that that's saying much, but its a start. If the snow is unski-able for most the mountain can you get your passes refunded and what not? Or do you just have to suck it up, live with it and practice your mudboarding.

i live 30kms from falls creek so i'll definately be skiing this year except i might have to take some time off skiing to do some studying for VCE and work.

we got 10-15cms last night and its pretty cold so i have a sneaking suspicion (sp?) that it could be snowing as we speak.

for those interested, i telemark. :D
if i had a dollar for the amount of times i've heard shouted from the chair lift "HEY MATE! YA BINDINGS ARE BROKEN!"....... haha good one!

That call was always lame but people seem to think its a pisser and that they are the first to say it... makes me giggle. its about as funny as calling snowboarders "F-ing knuckle draggers".
My mates give me the most shit (specially my snowboarder friend) coz i'm pretty much the only tele-skier under 20 in the town.

justr a little update as it's only 5 more sleeps until the season kicks off..

had a cruise through the BOM website and they're looking at a little under 16cm at spencer's creek. lets hope that the forecast snow for the rest of the week comes and the temps stay low so there can be some serious snowmaking. Thredbo has had snowblowers going all night on the mid and upper slopes so there is a firm base up top but down the bottom still has nothing (alot like last season:p)

unfortunatley, looking at the charts, i dont think that the high hovering over SE NSW atm is going to be especially helpful for snowy conditions but hopefully that'll head on in a day or so bringing in the low and the cold front that are hovering just behind it, if you have a look at the synoptic chart for wednesday or thursday (predicted, anyway) you'll see that it's right on the backside of the high which should bring rain and therefore snow at high altitudes.

with any luck i'll be up at thredbo on either the 30th of june or the 1st of july. anybdy thinking they'll be at thredbo around then?

EDIT: oh yeah, i'll also be in NZ from the 9th of july. i'm flying into auckland on the afternoon of the 9th and will be in rotorua on the 10th, then back in auckland on the 11th and flying to queenstown that day. I'll probably be there until the 17th and then driving to christchurch until about the 24th then fly up to wellington and back to canberra on the 25th. anybody going to be here during these dates? let me know cos it'd be good to meet up with somebody to go for a bit of a slide and a yarn about mtbing

on friday or saturday night (will have to double check... let you know tomorrow hopefuly) there's the straight line rail jam outside straightline on lonsdale street. 4tons of snow and 9ft tall scaffolding so evryone can get in some pre season rails. AFAIK there'll be live bands and DVDs playing projected onto the wall. afterparty at civic pub (across the road)

no alcohol event. should be fun. everyone come down and watch locals and pros ripping it up!

its insane. I just got back to melbourne from a hectic weekend of work. I've hard rumors of the best snow on opening weekend since 2000 and a record number of visitors for the weekend also.

Awesome snow (for this time of year) lots of cool people and plenty of beer, bring it on!

Seems like a better start to the season than last year. Im off to q-town for a week from this sat, then to Thredders and perisher for a few days early July, then back over to NZ on the 11th to work in Ohakune for 5 months shredding Turoa and Whakapapa. Taking over my bike too, maybe do some riding in Rotorura and around ruapehu.

So damn amped even though my jaw is killing from having my wisdom teeth out today.

Happy turns to all you powder hounds and newbies out there, whatever frozen water craft you choose to ride.

http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa135/Kirky42/edited2.jpg

We left our dull overcast town and drove up on Friday night. On Saturday we skied all day. It was one of the best days skiing i have ever had. There was not a cloud in the sky and there was barely anyone on the mountain. That meant no lines for the chairs, no idiot beginners and plenty of fresh, un-skied snow to ski.

Unfortunately the Heavenly Vally chair was not opened, but we managed to get across to the Canyon, it was icy on the ridge but once you missed that and headed down into the valley you fine.

I was talking to a paramedic up there and he said that when we get another 30cm's of snow they will open up the rest of the mountain. He also said that it will snow tomorrow from 9am to 11am (He looked like he knew what he was on about with all the weather).

Pitty New Zealands season is staring off slowly.Depends on where you are going, but it isn't too bad over there.

Got back on Sunday from a week around Q-town. We had 25cm fall on the Wednesday and that helped top things up all over the place. Coronet and Cadrona were both good (all lifts open, with a decent amount of off-piste fun), and from reports Treble Cone was even better.

went to buller yesterday.. missed out big time.. wanted to go on satdy/sunday, and get the first of the calm days after a week of straight snow (like 70 cms worth..)... but going 3 days late, and cold nights, meant the place was like an icicle in most areas. the bottom of fed still has some soft stuff but i dont think it should have been opened, as the lower half still needed a bit more snow but was a godo challenge with a few bushes/rocks/minicliffs... the grimus area and powderkeg area still had a little bit of soft stuff around.....

the parks werent as good as i was expecting? buller had better parks this time last year, with half the natural snow... plus i missed the halfpipe by a day .. not to say i didnt ride it any way hahaha

all in all i had an alright day, apart from the constent lift failures... (having to walk up emirates.. the first time i have ever rode it.. not riding that area again.

I just got back from a week on the North Island. Mt Ruapehu is great. It got a lot of snow early and it seems to stay around for a long time. Staying at Ohakune is quiet compared to Queenstown but is a nice change. We spent more time at Turoa than Whakapapa but both were good, just Turoa is closer to town. The wind shut us down a couple of days but aside from that it was worth it. Definately look at Ruapehu if you go to NZ but try to avoid the school holidays.

(lukily no one else was dumb enough to try make it past the road closed signs haha).. ended up turning her around, well sliding her. and theslow trip ack down, untill we found a nice little patch were were rode for a little bit on our skateboard decks and body boards, didnt bringa board, wasnt expecting there to be enough... if any one is bored tommorow morning, i highly suggest it for a slide, there was atleast 10cms down on the ground, and if you could get up the top i could imagine much more!!!

That doesnt have much to do with the amount of snow we are getting.

They estimate over a year it might add 5% to the overall base. Remember thats a might.

Caught the bus up to Thredbo on Thursday with barely 3 hours of skiing under my belt. I (wisely) spent most of the day on Friday Flat, but had a go at a green trail, which was a bit of a jump for me. I fell a few times, but it didn't hurt cos of the amount of soft powder! I'm back up there next weekend with a group from work for the winter corporate games, should be fun.

well... bastards. arrived in methven a few days ago. went to mt hutt. icy as the inside of my freezer. then i got sick. no snow, no wind, not even any cloud cover. that'll teach me to spend obscene amounts of money to go somewhere that's having the sh*ttest season in years. cant wait to get back to aus and shred some snow rather than ice and parks (im not a huge park guy)

You are not going to believe this.....

I'm sitting at home right now as I am sick as a dog, could be bronchitis I really hope not. Plus my lil sis just quit her job at Hotham, not sure exactly what happened but she had a blow up with the boss. All this with 7 days till I leave

So Im in limbo, leaving for Melbourne next Thursday with no accom or anything planned, should make for an interesting 2 weeks.

Probably go do Buller for a few days now and try and get some Accom at Jindy, and do a bit of Perisher.

Fingers crossed, not missing this season even if I have to hitchhike up and down the mountain.

I had a good the time, even though the snow wasn't great, it was better than most of the snow i've seen at perisher. Just hanging in Queenstown was awesome, did the canyon swing, shotover jet and luge, sooo fun. I gotta go back in summer, I talked to a guy in the bike shop, and he said the riding in Queenstown was pretty good. I also Jusso in the bike shop!

Ahh shucks, check out that comradery. See what this place does to people.

Thank you very much for the offer DHTF, but we will be right. I was hoping to get to Perisher, but my companions cant stretch the budget quite that far. Plus we all turn up in Melbourne at different times, the damn logistics are a nightmare lmfao.

I'm going to go hit Buller for a week, possibly even day trip a couple of days the week before hand. I can get some YHA accom for a week, plus Ive got family in Goughs bay, can always catch that damn bus up and down the mountain lol.

Cheers buddy :D

Its only put me about 5 days behind the 8 ball, I'm still stoked Im going and my flu/whatever the fuck it was (I've seen hippos in saunas sweat less) is almost over, if Im well enough to work Im well enough to party.

*Bump*

Well heres another part of the story, I know you are all dieing to know

I had to move house last week, so my holiday got postponed AGAIN, then I found out I could get back into my old house (2 year lease), so we moved all our stuff back  2 total moves in 7 days (2 blokes 1 car and 1 7'x5' trailer). Why did we move back? Well no rent inspections, no agents, Ducted A/C, roof fans in every room, gas points, polished boards, MASSIVE workshop, double carport with remote doors, totally enclosed yard complete with 7 foot fences (ex bikers house) hahah its sweet.

So right now Im sitting in my folks house in Melbourne counting the hours until Monday morning, the old man is going to ferry us up to Mansfield, we've got a full week at Buller YHA.

FINALLY!!!!

Sam.

went up to baw baw today.. first time out of a season where i expected to go there every week... but just havnt had the time/money.

Was a bloody warm day, according to the internet its was 10 degrees at just past 8 o'clock up there!

we got there about 11, first lift (t bar) up, we noticed that they were knocking down the rail park.. the main reason we went up so i was pretty damn pissed off, especialy since we were told it was open when we bought tickets, apprantly it was just to warm and to much traffic, so the snow on the landings had completly melted..
but we got over that, and headed over to where they had a few berms and a large table, rode that for a few runs, and then they decide they are going to re build a rail park there, so we were no longer allowed to ride there either..
i dont see why they cant build/mod there parks at night, like every other freaking mountain...

apart from those issues, had a pretty good time, found some nice wind blown snow in the trees, and a little backcountry.

worst bit is, i now have a massive bruise on my thigh from riding poma's and t bars all day :(

i think this could be my last slide of the season, unless they get a little bit this weekend.
