Hey guys I'm in the market for a new ride and I have always loved the look of the Demos. I was just wondering a) what is the differences between the 8 and 9 and b) how they ride (ie what other bike you would compare them to if any) as I ride a bit of downhill but mostly freeride.
There seems to be a few '05 Demo 9s for sale and also a very nice '06 Demo 8 all around the 3K mark
Cheers

a)The difference between a Demo 8 and a Demo 9 is that a 8 has 8 inches of suspension and a 9 has 9inches, but also the frame deisgn is different, Making the 8 more suited to DH and the 9 more suited to Freeride.
b)I have ridden my mates Demo 9 on a track once and it was very stable at high speeds, soaked up all the bumps and drops, but when it came to getting airborn it felt, like the Demo just wanted to stick to the ground!
Go get a Test ride on both if you can.:)
good luck they are nice bikes!

neither, the Demo 7 is the best out of them all.

Definetly go for the Demo 8, for many reasons. The 8 is about 3 Kg's lighter and anything that you throw at a Demo 9, your 8 is going to do just as well.

I prefer the Demo 9's.The 8's were really tinnie, and on top of that ive meet and know a fare few people who's demo 8's cracked around the swing arm area.

Demo 8 vs Demo 9. The 1 inch of travel.
I own a 2004 Demo 9, rode a demo 8 in a parking lot. You won't really be able to feel much difference regarding the geometry. The 8 (and now 7) is probably more suited to DH because less travel means that it's centre of gravity is lower. Other than that, you really can't go wrong with either bike. I wouldn't worry TOO much about the weight. Just means that you'll be more stable and carry momentum easier on rough sections.
Also, the 2004 Demo 9 frames are the strongest (supposedly - please correct me if not) of all model years.
both the 9 and the 8 are great bikes. What everyone is saying is correct the 9 is more of a freeride beast and has an extra inch or travel also stronger and heavier. The only downside to the 9 is it is set a bit higher and therefore doesn't corner as well, but you do get more ground clearence. I'm riding an 8 at the moment and totally love it but it does take a bit of getting use to the lower bottom bracket (not much clearence) but once you do it goes great.
At the end of the day you can't go wrong with either a Demo 8 or 9.

People say that the frame cracks near the swing arm. Mine definetly hasn't and ive put it through very hard abuse.

correct! from memory lifetime warrenty as well
go demo 9 if your on the heavier side... i am 6 foot 2 and i love mine.... if your a bit smaller and lighter then the 8 will be sweet
If you can go the 07 Demo 8 it is totally different feel to the old ones, Much Much more suited to DH. I had one of the 05 Demo 8's that cracked, and it was replaced with an 07. Awesome ride.

The demo9s have a very slack head angle, so they are very stable at high speeds, but the down side is that they arn't the best when it comes to the tight stuff {IMO} I find that they aren't the sort of bike that you can get air off little jumps but thkey are great at the bigger stuff & are realy inspire confidence. They are also very heavy, mine is a med & is about 22kg.
I have a 04 demo9 & am not sure weather or not to upgrade to a 07 demo8 or just upgrade the parts on my demo9. Does anyone know if the travle can be incresed on the 07 demo8s by removing the spacer in the shock like it can on the demo7s?

The 1 inch doesn't really make that much difference does it? Also as has been said in this forum the main difference is the freeriding vs dh'ing geo and weight, which the '07 demo 8 is more suited to DH. So I guess if you are a DH racer then the demo 8 is for you but if you are more of a big hucking type upgrade the parts on your 9.

Got any proof on that? Ive owned a Demo9 for every year since 04-06 and now a 07 demo8 and i have never heard this before.
