Planing out gap distances?

How do all you builders plan out gap distances? If you made a down ramp too far or high on a fast section there could be some serious trouble. How do you get it right first time?

Build it closer..go slower..then move it back and go faster
Repeat that until its at the right speed.

one hint: its very easy to move the downramp further away from the up ramp, but not pretty hard to do it the other way around, start off fairly close and slow and make it bigger as you progress.

or if you know it is a speed jump a nice bid downramp say about 1.5-2m away will do fine
