I think Lanky Love was asking why these shows can't be aired weeknights when there's only crap (aka SMS/vote for this or that type ****) on the commercial channels, which I agree. Sundays are when most of us do get a chance to ride XC so not a good time to air IMO. But, on the same token, thumbs up to SBS for at least airing XC racing.

Damn right - both races weren't decided until quite close to the finish. I actually thought the women's race was the better of the two. Pity Gunn-Rita lost. Where are all these Chinese riders coming from? Interesting none are turning up in the men's events. Reminds me of a certain period in international swimming a few years ago... <<insert theory here;)>>
Sauser is a machine. After flatting on the first lap and going backwards about 30 places, he had no right to make the podium.

Yeah, I did, but I used my Set-top box (it records to hard drive). Once I work out how to convert whatever file type that thing uses to something we can all watch, then it's a goer. You're likely to be waiting a while, though - I'm not super good with this kind of techno wizardry.

1. 11.30am barely qualifies as "the morning", start riding at 5:30am , leaves plenty of time for riding
2. Many, many years ago, SONY invented the Betamax VCR as well as JVC with VHS, this allowed you to record TV and watch it later, this came along about the same time as the Penny Farthing. These days you can record it to a HDD recorder or probably find it on a bit torrent somewhere ah la previous SBS MTB shows. Hell, the 2006 XC MTB torrent file is still up here : http://www.mininova.org/tor/420361 as well as the UCI track championships from SBS here http://www.mininova.org/tor/297445
:D
I watched the whole hour, and to be honest, it was an hour I could have spent better on my bike........
Sure these guys & girls are the best, but the commentry was woeful, and the footage almost put me to sleep...
Any other views?

It was good to see some XC on the telly but I'd have to admit the coverage wasn't that good. The second race was by far the best - the first one seemed to be a glorified road ride on dirt! Sure - those guys/girls can climb a hill well but where is the technical skill?
The second race did have some more technical riding so that was more fun to watch. What did everyone else think?

Mmmmm second race was heaps better than the first. I don't think they did it much justice though, but props to SBS for getting it on there at all.

Hahaha, I was thinking that whilst watching it too!
Have to agree with others about the coverage, too much pre-race jibberish and podium footage shown, and not enough coverage of the actual race - especailly technical areas! Oh well better than anything else that was on at the time.

Given that, as far as I can recall, these races weren't shown at all last year, I am gratfeul to SBS for putting these on. Hopefully they will show the remainder of the World Cup series as well. While the marathon race did not look particularly technical, the rock sections and (what looked like) steep climbs would have made it damn hard. I thought the Houfallize race was pretty good (rutted with some technical sections), and the commentary was much better that previous efforts. SBS showed weeks of road races before showing this, so if you want to see more of them, send SBS a note saying you enjoyed it and they should show some more.

PS - the 3 Chinese riders all out in front in the first section certainly brought back images of the Chinese women swimmers and runners. I don't want to be cynical, but past history and the absence of male riders, makes it look very dodgy.

The Chinese, and to an extent the Australian Sports commission are targeting Womens MTB because that's where they see small fields and a lack of competition - thus easier prospects for results.
The Chinese are doing this in all the sports they see as easy pickings.
But yes the Chinese women have gone from nuthin' to winning in less than 2 years.

Prettyt much agree with that sentiment, I ended up FFíng through most of the first race, watching riding on firetrails is not my thing, bring on the single track. The 2nd race was, as you say, much more interesting.
It was also interesting to see where the riders were from, no yanks, no Aussie, no NZ, no Canadians etc. Is there an alternate racing series the rest of the world competes in ?

The track had some good points but the bulk of the coverage showed the climbing and the boring fire road (and road!) section. It was a bit of a yawn but I'm a better person for watching those buggers slave away while I was laying on the lounge eating potato chips............
I must say that I'd be verys urprised to see how many people with less skill and fitness than the top of the line athletes could actually ride that first climb. It looked super dooper steep and fairly long............

Unfortunately we're just not high enough up the leader board to be TV worthy.
